From Roots to Wings: The Inspiring Journey of Caganganan Elementary School
Nurturing young dreams and shaping future leaders for over six decades
A school is not just a building; it’s where dreams begin. Each morning, as the golden sun peeks over the lush fields of Barangay Caganganan in Banaybanay, Davao Oriental—one of the municipality’s most abundant and quality rice-producing barangays—the cheerful laughter of children fills the air, echoing through the grounds of Caganganan Elementary School (CES). For decades, CES has been more than just a school—it has been the beating heart of the community, a sanctuary where dreams take root and futures are built. But what journey transformed this humble institution into one of the district’s most respected and thriving schools?
Caganganan Elementary School opened its doors in 1962, led by its first school head, Mr. Norberto Capili, along with five dedicated teachers. Its story began even earlier, in 1957, when the late Felicidad Panuncialman, a generous community member, donated the land that would become the school’s home.
Today, Caganganan Elementary School stands proudly on a vast 37,398-square-meter property, with 22,000 square meters devoted to agriculture. Here, students cultivate crops and life skills, learning the values of sustainability, teamwork, and responsibility through hands-on agricultural activities. This agricultural foundation reflects the very essence of Barangay Caganganan itself—a fertile, hardworking community known for producing some of the best quality rice in the region.
CES offers Kindergarten and Grades 1 to 6, ensuring a strong foundation for learners during their formative years. In line with its commitment to inclusivity, the school also caters to learners with special needs, providing a nurturing environment where every child is valued and supported in their educational journey.
Over the years, the direction and growth of Caganganan Elementary School have been shaped by the dedication of nine remarkable school leaders, each leaving a legacy of progress. Today, the school continues to thrive under the passionate leadership of Mrs. Carolina B. Munion, whose vision and commitment inspire the entire school community. Together with 12 highly dedicated teachers and 1 dependable Administrative Officer, Mrs. Munion ensures that every learner is given the opportunity to grow holistically. They work hand in hand to nurture the intellectual, social, and emotional development of an average of 280–300 students each year, empowering them to reach their fullest potential.
One of CES’s most impactful initiatives is its literacy-focused programs. The school proudly implements Project CAROL (Cultivate Advance Readers to Optimize Learning), a homegrown reading initiative that strengthens learners’ reading comprehension and love for books. This project is closely aligned with the Project BOOKas of the Municipality of Banaybanay, both of which are reading programs carried out in close cooperation with the Local Barangay and the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Barangay Caganganan. Through this strong partnership, struggling readers receive focused interventions, while advanced readers are further challenged to enhance their skills. By involving youth leaders, parents, and community members, the school has fostered a reading culture that has significantly contributed to learners’ academic success and lifelong passion for learning.
Caganganan Elementary School has built a reputation for excellence, earning numerous awards and distinctions, including:
• Best Project BOOKas Implementer in the district, a literacy initiative
• Best School Administrator Implementer (Project BOOKas, Elementary Level)
• Best Gulayan sa Paaralan Program (GPP) Implementing School
• Recognition as one of the Model School Canteens in the district
• Model School Implementer for the School-Based Feeding Program
• Best School Landscape awardee
The school also brings immense pride to the Division of Davao Oriental, earning prestigious accolades such as the Division Special Award: Gawad Kalasag 2025. Its strong and dynamic scouting tradition has further elevated its reputation, gaining recognition on the national stage. Caganganan Elementary School was honored as the GSP Best Magic Spot Awardee in 2011 and later received the coveted Pillar Hidalgo Award—placing 1st in the Region and 2nd at the National Level for the years 2014–2015. These achievements stand as a testament to the school’s unwavering commitment to excellence, resilience, and holistic development
At the heart of CES’s success are its teachers. More than educators, they are mentors who go beyond textbooks to instill values and inspire young minds. Their dedication has turned CES into a model school, frequently visited by Division and Regional officials eager to observe its best practices.
Caganganan Elementary School is more than a place where children learn; it is a vibrant community where values, service, and excellence are deeply rooted. As it continues to grow, the school remains committed to molding learners who will not only excel academically but also contribute meaningfully to society. In the abundant heart of Caganganan Elementary School—where rice fields flourish and roots run deep—wings grow strong, and the future shines bright.
