Cabancalan 1 Elementary School is one of the oldest schools in our city. It dates back in 1928. It is situated in 5,044 square meters land area, bounded by Barangay Tingub in the north, Barangay Banilad in the west, Barangay Bakilid in the south and Barangay Maguikay in the east. The lot located in Cabancalan was donated by Mr. Donato Codoy and Francisca Cabahug.
Through the resolutions sponsored by Councilor Felomino Rosal in 1928, the first two-room building was constructed with more than twenty grade one pupils under the tutorship of the late Alejandro Fortuna whom later on became the Mayor of Mandaue during the Japanese occupation. On April 3, 1929 one class was added with a Mrs. Bebing Echavez teaching the grade three and four pupils. Miss Maxima Seno pupolarly known as Na Ima was one of the pioneer teachers of Cabancalan 1 Elementary School though during that time the school was yet a primary school.
In 1940, Mr. Leocadio Momongan the supervising teacher at that time sent a letter to the municipal council notifying the said body that the school did not meet the requirement of at least one hectare a lot and if it did not meet the standard requirement it would be closed the following school opening.
With this acute problem on hand, the PTA officials and members under the able leadership of Mr. Elias Cortes, the PTA President during that time was able to raise funds to buy a lot through a little farther acrosss Hernan Cortes Street, the intermediate grades were then housed in this new school site.
During the Japanese occupation the four-room Gabaldon building was destroyed. Then after the war it was roughtly repaired using bamboo materials. Congressman Lopez then took the initiative in the final repair of the said building, which housed the first pupil enrolees after the year. It then became a complete elementary school. And in the school year 1945-1950, 49 graduates walked through the portals of the proud school. They were first graduates under the dynamic tutorship of Mrs. Asuncion Alino.
The school experienced a change in 1972 when it was divided into two. The main building situated along the corner of Hernan Cortes Street and on Manuel L. Quezon was named Cabancalan 1 Elementary School with Mrs. Asuncion Alino as the first principal and the former intermediate building which is 150 meters away from the mother school was named Cabancalan II Elementary School with Mrs. Corazaon Cogina as the first principal Mr. Alejandro Alinsug who was the supervisor during that time successfully initiated this significant event.
Then there was a move to change the name of the school but it was strongly opposed by the old folks; these responsible old folks who had contributed much to the founding of the school did not grant it because of sentimental reasons.
Now the school becomes the monument of successful men and women due to the joint efforts of the administrator and teachers who want to move forward together to aim for quality education.
The school then has progressed immensely with nine school buildings erected proudly. It has now 2230 schoolchildren under the leadership of Mrs. Louwella P. Guerrero the principal at present and with 62 teachers.
The following were the past administrators of our school; Mr. Isabelo Elbana, Mr. Nemesio Alinsug, Mr. Alejandro Alinsug, Mr. Marcelino Juntilla, Mr. Epitacio Mangubat, Mrs. Asuncion Alino, Mrs. Angelina Fornolles, Mr. Alejandro Lumapas, Mrs. Luisa Perez, Mr. Primitivo Solon, Mrs. Teodora Sanchez, Mrs. Felicidad Ouano, Mrs. Celia Luzon, Mrs. Geronima Acut, Mrs. Virginia Gahi, Mr. Nicasio Cortes, Mr. Florentino Marababol, Mrs. Rosalina Gonzales, Dr. Robert V.
