Dassun, Solana, Cagayan is a place where you can find people who are by nature
very industrious and hardworking. Both the husband and the wife are in the field. The children, too, are trained in working in the field. Young as they are, these children are used in working under the heat of the sun. Family kinship is apparently very close. Respect is a value which is very much manifested by the members of the clan.
Most of the people in the place speak Itawes. This can be attributed to the fact that their forefathers came from Itawes speaking places. Few speak in Ibanag and Tagalog. Iloko speaking people migrated to the place.
Bayanihan is still evident in the barrio specially during weddings, baptism, burial and during harvest time. Community people help one another to make work easier and faster.
On the aspect of religion, it is very evident that this place is dominated by the Roman Catholics. There are some who belong to Iglesia ni Cristo and Born Again Christian and Jehovah Witnesses. There are very few who practices their faith religiously. They give most of their time in household chores and business. Some even use Sundays in tilling their farmlands.
When it comes to politics, people of Dassun are not so meticulous regarding the political affliction of a candidate. The popularity and the way a politician deals with a “common tao” counts most. They would never look into educational qualification and work experience of the candidate in relevance to the office one is running for. Same is true after elections for these people would never question how these elected officials run the government (even in the barangay level) for the fear of being branded as “kontrabida”.
Dassun Elementary School is located at Dassun Solana Cagayan which is found in the northeastern most part of Solana, Province of Cagayan. It is quite far from the poblacion for it takes one about thirty to forty-five minutes ride before reaching it. It is a thickly populated barrio for its population as of October 25,2018 is 4190. It is bounded in the north by barangay’s Malacabibi and Malalam, eastern side by the Cagayan River, Western side by barangay Iraga and in the southern by barangay Bauan and Cattaran.
Farming is the main source of livelihood there. Almost all of the people here are farmers. However, there are only very few of them who own hectares of farmlands. Most of them are the so called small- scale farmers and yet, there are even some who are just laborers. It is also a common practice and at the same time an accepted fact that very few of these farmers (maybe only those owning hectares of land) can finance by themselves the farm inputs that they need. Majority of them depend on some private lending institutions who charge interest rates. From the seed that they plant and the fertilizers needed, not to forget insecticides and pesticides, and even cash, too. This is the very reason why most farmers are always indebted despite the volume of crops that they have. Aside from farming, another very significant source of income here in selling fish specifically the African hito. This, in a way help augment the needs of the family, most particularly their daily basic needs. There are also some who are having backyard piggery. People in our place never let an opportunity pass whenever there are opportunities to earn income.
