Calaoagan Bassit Elementary School is one among the oldest elementary schools in the municipality. It started its operation immediately after the World War II.
According to information, CBES did not have building to house the pupils. At its early stage, pupils were housed in nipa shafts and some under the trees. Since the barangay had an abundant bamboo then, people built temporary building just so to protect themselves from rain and the heat of the sun.
Early pupils were over-aged. In fact, a grade 1 was matured adult like their teachers. There were no uniforms worn and came to school barefooted. They did not have school supplies to use. They use leaves and sharp pointed objects as paper and pencils.
Teachers of long time ago in CBES were most cranky teachers. They were disciplinarian and always had a whip or pamalo in hand. For a simple offense incurred by a pupil, a corresponding punishment was given. Thus, few pupils enrolled in school. There were no graduate teachers, meaning; it is enough that a literate person became a teacher. Three subjects were only taught then. The Reading, Writing and Arithmetic. Only bright and enduring pupils finished schooling.
Time passed by and everything changed. The shanty houses became concrete buildings, the indigent pupils became decently dressed pupils and professional teachers took over. The manner of treating pupils also changed. Way of disciplining was changed to a democratic way of handling pupils.
