Brigada Eskwela, other known as the National Schools Maintenance Week is annually celebrated by the Pina Weste Elementary School, Gattaran East District since it was mandated by the Department of Education, way back early School Year of 2003. This activity primarily aims to prepare the school premises and classrooms for well-conducive learning for the first day of classes.
It has been organized thru the joint effort of the School Head, External Stakeholders, the Barangay Chairman, PTA President and other concerned citizens, Religious Sectors, SK Federation, Business Sectors, Teachers, Students, and Individuals who volunteer their time and skills to do classroom repairs, clean-up of Public Elementary and Secondary Schools. Given the positive result of the program, in 2008, it became a permanent activity in the school calendar where all schools nationwide are mandated to implement the program weeks before the school opening.
The Planning Team, the school head, being the chairman of the Committee dubbed as Bayanihan PWES, created different Committees/Committee Chairman to act as In-Charge of the different works to be done during the duration of one Brigada Eskwela, worked harmoniously that resulted into progressive accomplishments.
Cleanliness and Improvement of the school facilities has been done smoothly thru the act of voluntarism of the external stakeholders. The minor repairs of chairs, arm chairs, bulletin boards, windows, door knobs and repainting of roofs of the Instructional Rooms has been successfully done for the physical facilities thru the guidance of the different designated as area chairman who worked collaboratively with the assigned Barangay Kagawad who shared his time unselfishly for the improvement of the school. External stakeholders who volunteered to join the team, showed interest in sharing their effort to make the school ready for the opening of classes for the learners and molders of the youth in the locality.
Landscaping, Mr. Rommel D. Molina, as the chairman together with his partner, Kagawad Renato G. Vicente, planned and act into the development of the area that came up with a better one. PWES as a learning institution always adhere to the call of the system as to the improvement, not only into its physical aspects but in all angles that are needed for improvement, be it minor or major repair. The populace are always willing to extend their assistance thru Bayanihan System.
Another area of concern is the Gulayan sa Paaralan, the area that caters the needs of the recipients in School-based Feeding Program, the EPP Coordinator, designated as the chairman with the SK President of the Barangay with his officials ,the 4P’s recipients jointly worked harmoniously in cleaning the school vegetable garden, planted seeds/seedlings appropriate to the weather condition such as eggplants, sitaw, beans, camote and upland kangkong for the consumption of the below normal pupils as supplemental to the supplies coming from the Division Office. These were all done for the sake of the recipients for them to be mentally and physically fit to gain more knowledge and wisdom shared by teachers. Teachers who care not just for mental-health but also for the holistic development of every learner.
Small act of kindness from civic-oriented residents of the barangay donated cash and in kind too, for the improvement of the school such as paints, paintbrush, thinner, for the repainting of school roofs, some donated snacks wholeheartedly to the volunteers who did the repainting and repairing of some physical facilities.
Partnerships and linkages have been developed with the LGU Municipal level who extended their help in kind for the maintenance of the school programs and projects.
Activities, though it is a multifarious is challenging one, everyone showed interest by the volunteers from the different organizations manifested their love to the school, Pina Weste Elementary School, the school that is willing to nurture every learner in the community with the full support of teachers headed by the school administrator.
Bayanihan has been strengthened between and among the Barangay and PTA Officials, Teachers and Parents who came up with a good result that led Pina Weste Elementary School awarded as Second Place, Large Category in the Brigada Eskwela Best Implementer, 2016.
The success of Brigada Eskwela,2016 did not just end there, for as long as the DEPED implements the Program, the Bayanihan PWES will always be there to adhere to the call of the system. A great challenge to the Teaching staff, School Head, and External Stakeholders.
Together let us make a great history, abide DepEd orders for the improvement of our school not just its physical aspects but with commitment, that no learners must be left behind.
In the course of accomplishing each own area, Teachers assigned in the Special Program, Remedial Reading Tutorial known as BRIGADA BASA to the identified slow readers in different grade levels were also conducted, identified pupils were instructed by teachers to report during Brigada Eskwela to be able to guide them to enrich their reading skills to prepare themselves to the higher grade level. SPGO Officers helped teachers in the Special Program of the school.
Finally, the awarding of certificates, the most interesting one, the Bayanihang PWES, never expect to receive award, with the utmost commitment and dedication of the volunteers, Teaching Staff were glad that they garnered 2nd place in the district level.
Healthy Foods, Healthy Minds

School canteen and other school food services are important educational resources. They have an important role in the provision of food to students and the school community as well as being integral part of the school environment.
The school canteen should reflect the educational goals of the school and support and complement student learning. When consumed daily, the food provided through the school canteen may comprise a third of a student’s total daily intake and have a significant influence on their health and nutrition.
It is important that parents, teachers and students work together to support a whole-school approach to building a school culture in which students actively choose nutritious foods and a healthy lifestyle.
The school canteen reflects the value habits of putting on healthy eating practices to the pupils and teachers alike. In addition to providing nutritious food, the canteen is important to health in promoting its role within the school.
As evident to this, Piña Weste Elementary School received an award as the Most Student-Nutrition Friendly School Canteen (Elementary Level) This award is to acknowledge the outstanding implementation of the DepEd orders No.13 series of 2017 and DepEd No.10 series of 2016, in providing healthy food and beverage choices and in observing water and sanitation hygiene.
