HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
History of Maddalero Elementary School
One of the show windows of Buguey District is Maddalero Elementary School that was opened in 1923. This primary school was established through the initiatitve of the old folks of the community. In May, 1925, a strong typhoon destroyed the temporary school building so the people decided to close the school. Pupils were transferred to Buguey Central School. In the year 1927, the primary school was reopened with three grade levels. Mr. Maximo Maddagan was the first teacher assigned to the same school. The following year, another teacher, Mr. Juan Paliuanan of Camalaniugan was assigned to Maddalero. In 1930, the school was closed again because the teachers were transferred to Buyun, Sta. Teresita, still a barrio of Buguey.
After the war, the school was again reopened but it was transferred to another site that was wider than the former. The new place has an area of 8,350 square meters donated by a civic spirited citizen, Mr. Loreto Tacazon, now residing in the United States. The once a primary school became a complete elementary school temporarily erected. Mr. Alfonson P. Palpallatoc was one of the first graduates of the school.
After several years, the people of Maddalero who were under the leadership of Mr. Pedro Tolete, decided to put up two buildings with a temporary Home Economics room. Mr. Tolete became the founder of the school and the first Parent Teachers Association President was Mr. FelicianomTabarrejo.
After some years, the people felt the need to improve the school buildings, so another adviser came, the late Mr. Severino Vagay and the late, Mr. Juan Ibarra, who also succeeded the P.T.A. Presidency. With their leadership, they decided to put up a Gabaldon building. The P.T.A. president, with the teachers solicited the help of the community to pool resources for the erection of the Gabaldon building. The community showed utmost cooperation that made into realitythe erection of the Gabaldon building. This building was used for more than 20 years. During this years, Mr. Gregorio Garceron was assigned as the school Head Teacher.
In the later part of 1960’s, the temporary Home Economics Building was changed into a concrete one under the initiative of the P.T.A. headed by Mr. Carlos A. Gascon. This is now being used as the Industrial Arts Building.
The school year 1970-1971 was the demolition of the old Gabaldon Building to give way to a new one, the Republic of the Philippines-United States Building. This was made possible through a joint resolution made by the community and the teaching staff headed by Mrs. Clarita Varilla, head teacher, and the P.T.A officers led by Mr. Clemente Sabado. Later, another building was put up granted by the office of the governor in the province.
Still there was a need for improvement. Mr. Fredelito A. Gascon, P.T.A. President, initiated another joint resolution with the teaching staff headed by Mr. Alfonso Palpallatoc for a better Home Economics Building. In 1988, the resolution was granted with the putting up of a multi-purpose Home Economics Building. This is the latest building ever put up in the school.
Continuous improvement is still being initiated by the teachers in landscaping, and building concrete perimeter fence made possible through the fund raising campaign headed by all the teachers.
A nursery was put up through the initiative of Agriculture teacher, Mr. Restituto de la Cruz while the concrete fencing is being continued as a joint project of the P.T.C.A under the leadership of Mr. Jesus Castillo.
The year 1998was highlighted with the bagging of second prize by the school in the COSDAPP contest led division-wide.
During the term of Mr. Mauro C. Aquino as P.T.C.A. president, the school again was selected as a contestant in the COSDAPP, newly named National Drug Education Program (NDEP), held region- wide. Mr. Aquino tapped the cooperation of the community to help the school in its endeavour. Nipa shacks (bahay kubo) were built in the center of every barrio zone for their respective reading centers, followed by the implementation of the Clean and Green Program of the government. Mr. Elpidio C. Sabado, the school principal and the teaching staff, as well as the P.T.C.A. and the barrio people, made all possible moves to win in the contest. Their efforts not in vain for the school was awarded second in the regional NDEP implementation contest.
At present, the perimeter fence of the school is near to completion. At this juncture, the administration of Maddalero Elementary School takes this opportunity to thank the donors for their contributions to all the activities and projects of the school.
Improvements are always sought for, not only physically but also academically. Comparing to other more populated schools, the Maddalero Elementary School is not far behind in terms of academic performance. The school ranks high in the National Elementary Assessment Test and the percentage of achievement improves every year. For the last three years it attained 100% passing of the pupils who took the NEAT. This proves that the academic capability of the pupils in particular is high.
Maddalero Elementary School has been serving other barangays before but with the present program of the government establishing schools in every barangay, population decreased and some of the teachers were deployed to newly established schools. However, the quality of education offered is still improving with each passing time.
The most is known as the DLRC Learning Center covering several districts since 1980.
The most recent project is the functional Science and technology Park, a priority project of the school for better pupil learning environment in Science and technology in consonance with the pressing need of the times.
