HISTORY OF TALLUNGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Tallungan Elementary School was erected in 1935, according to the history of Barangay Tallungan. It was built of light materials: bamboo, nipa and wood with no floorings. The school used to cater pupils from Barangay Macanaya and Barangay Gaddang since the two barangays did not have their respective schools yet. It was led by a school principal. The school was able to withstand the test of time. She has survived natural as well as man-made calamities. The school used to be a cemetery according to the barangay folks during the Japanese regime. Tangible changes had transformed the school. On January 15, 1968, the administration of the then president, President Ferdinand E. Marcos paved the way for the construction of the Modified Marcos-type Building. The said 144 sq. m., three-room building was used as classrooms for the primary grades. The building was built of cement, iron doors and windows, G.l sheets, wood and cemented floorings. With the advent of time and with the aid of different organizations, additional buildings were constructed as follows:
The above stated buildings had undergone renovations and/or repair with the passage of time and due to unavoidable natural phenomenon like typhoons.
DESCRIPTION OF SIGNIFICANT MILESTONES:
Tallungan Elementary School is regarded as one of the oldest educational institution in the municipality. Many administrators have come and gone from the portals of this institution. Many pupils also have sought their stars and became productive members of the society.
Through the leadership of the different administrators that have served the school, she has been known far and wide as an institution providing quality education. The school actively supports all the programs of the DEPED as well as the activities and programs of both the I-GU of Aparri and the barangay. Tallungan Elementary School teachers are always on the forefront whenever there are activities going on like the patronal town fiesta, the aramang festival and the barangay fiesta. In 1983 and in 1996, the school under the leadership of Mrs. Olivia Marigza gave an all out support to the barangay during the search for Model Barangay. With the help of all the teachers, Tallungan was able to win in the said search under the administration of Mr. Noe Annatu as Punong Barangay. Moreover, the school participated in the Clean and Green Program under different levels: municipal and division during the administration of Miss Janet Bacunana. The active members, officers, and advisers of the YES-O were able to put up a herbary, garbage compartments, compost pits, and established in the classrooms the four labelled types of trash bins which until now are present in every classroom.
The school is an advocate of a clean and green environment. She strongly supports the programs of the barangay, municipality, and the department by adhering to the strict compliance on a clean and green surroundings. The school's administration and the pupils observe proper waste segregation. The school also supports the department's order of greening the environment through the "Gulayan sa Paaralan" which is well-maintained by the pupils and the teachers. Parents and other stakeholders always work together for the betterment of the school and their children. This in return is now catering to the School-based Feeding Program (SBFP) that caters to 39 clienteles. Fresh vegetables are harvested and used as food for these children. Also, the school is maintaining the trees surrounding the school providing shades and fresh air.
For cultural participation, on December 1, 2016, the Tallungan Elementary School Drum and Lyre emerged Champion after competing with the different public elementary schools with drum and lyre corps in the municipality. Pupils are also active participants of the Aramang Festival and are always on the go whenever they are asked or requested by LGU-Aparri to render special numbers during programs.
People say that Tallungan Elementary School has a lucky streak to most of the administrators who have served their terms in the school. To name but a few: Mrs. Olivia Marigza, Ph.D., became a Schools District Supervisor, Mrs. Rosalind B. Guzman, Ph.D., also a
Schools District Supervisor and PPSTA Most Outstanding School Head in the Philippines, and Miss Janet T. Bacunana, Ph.D., now an Education Program Supervisor at Tuguegarao City
Division Office. In addition, some who have served as classroom teachers have now become principals and supervisor namely: Mr. Arturo Calata, Ph.D., Principal Ill, Mrs. Maricel Dantic, Ph.D., Principal I and Miss. Eden Malabag, Ph.D., Schools District Supervisor.
STORIES AND NARRATIVES
Alumni who were invited as guest speakers during commencement exercises had their own stories to tell about the school. Most of them were very thankful that they have been an alumnus or alumna of the school. The most common line they have said is that: Tallungan Elementary School has provided them with the quality of education that helped made them who they are and who they become.
SIGNIFICANCE
Tallungan Elementary School is the forefront of quality education in the locality of Aparri. She has contributed to the economic, political, social, and spiritual aspect of most of the people who have become part of this institution. Many productive individuals have become assets of the community they now belong. She has produced numerous teachers working in the school (herself), in neighboring towns, in other places and abroad. She has also produced lawyers, nurses, doctors, engineers, technologists, workers and heads of offices and agencies, and other professions. These people are now contributing and are now sharing what their school has provided them many years back.
