~ Summer 2021
This Summer 2021 project consisted in building and testing a RetroPie arcade console. The RetroPie arcade console is the most popular Raspberry Pi video game emulator. It allows the user to emulate popular video game consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, and more. The primary purpose for building this was to explore building such a console as a future student engagement project for the Tenzer Technology Center.
Project By: Emmanuel Alonge '24, and Mohamed Berbich '22.
The parts used in building the RetroPie arcade console are listed below:
A Raspberry Pi 4
Wireless SNES Controllers
Power Supply
2ft HDMI Cord
A Raspberry Pi 4 Case
A 64GB microSD card
The steps followed to build the RetroPie arcade console have been summarized below:
Place the Raspberry Pi 4 into its case.
Install the RetroPie Operating System.
Download the RetroPie SD-card image into the microSD card from a computer and select the appropriate image for the Raspberry Pi 4.
Format your microSD card to work with the Raspberry Pi 4.
Download a third-party utility called Etcher, and select your microSD card and the downloaded image from the previous step to "flash" the image to your microSD Card.
Put the microSD Card into your Raspberry Pi 4 and connect all the peripherals and turn it on.
Setup your Raspberry PI 4.
Connect your Raspberry Pi 4 to the internet, and configure your controllers.
Navigate to RASPI-CONFIG and choose "Expand Filesystem" from the menu. (The Raspberry Pi 4 should restart.)
Download and play games.
Using a flash drive, transfer ROMs (digital copies of games) from your computer into the Raspberry Pi 4.
You're ready to play!
The RetroPie build was a success, and the console is currently housed in Julian Room 300. The Tenzer Center is inviting you to come play some old-school arcade games and have fun. Possible student engagement events involving building the RetroPie console and playing games on it would be planned in the future so spread the word!
