WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF BIOTECHNOLOGY!
As you read this syllabus, Scientific breakthroughs in gene therapy are now restoring sight for children with inherited blindness, while cutting-edge CAR-T cell technologies are achieving remission and even cures for patients with leukemia and lymphoma, once beyond reach. At the same time, researchers are engineering crops with enhanced resilience and nutrition, addressing urgent challenges in global food security. This is a transformative era where the boundaries of science are being actively redefined to inspire hope and possibility for our future. For over 300,000 years, we, Homo sapiens, have been passive recipients of genetic inheritance, constrained by the evolutionary hand we were dealt. But today, only in the last few decades, thanks to advances in Recombinant DNA and genome editing technologies, we can intentionally rewrite the genetic code that underpins life itself. This represents a fundamental shift in our relationship with biology and how we can use biology to benefit society.
The answer to make this possible lies in biotechnology, which serves as the essential bridge between biological principles and applied innovations, transforming laboratory discoveries into solutions that directly impact human health, food security, environmental sustainability, and quality of life. Therefore, biotechnology is a rapidly advancing field that applies biological systems, living organisms, and molecular cellular processes to develop new technologies, products, and solutions that address human needs and global challenges.
In this 200-level course, we are going to explore the fundamental principles and cutting-edge applications of biotechnology. You will gain hands-on experience with techniques such as cloning, DNA sequencing, and gene expression analysis, while also learning how these tools are used to advance human health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Through a combination of lectures, laboratory experiments, and case studies, you will develop the skills to critically analyze biotechnological innovations and understand their ethical, societal, and global impacts. This course will prepare you to engage with the rapid evolving field of biotechnology and contribute meaningfully to your understanding of the scientific and technological challenges of our time.
