Samarkand, in modern-day Uzbekistan, was one of the most significant Central Asian cities on the Silk Road. First settled in 1,500 B.C., the city was long a key site of trade and cultural exchange. Samarkand is known for fine textiles and beautiful Islamic architecture.
A mausoleum complex dating back to the mid-14th century. Contains the most important Muslim shrine in the region.
