Welcome to 4th Grade

Welcome families! We are so glad that you are a part of the DGS community.

ReachWell Communication: We use the ReachWell app as a primary way to communicate with families. If you download the app, you will receive messages directly to your phone. If not, you will still receive messages to the email that you shared during registration.

Weekly Newsletters: We send a weekly newsletter on Tuesday evenings through ReachWell with updates on upcoming events and summaries of what students are learning. If you are not receiving it, please let us know!

Curriculum: As an innovation school, we are able to customize our curriculum. In fourth grade, we teach a class called "Education for Sustainability" in which the students learn science and social studies in project-based units organized around topics of sustainability.  All students have a 90 minute math block, a 90 minute literacy block, and twice a week, a 45 minute writing block. You can view our curriculum map to see an overview of the school year.

Please reach out to Matt and Travis by email with any questions about fourth grade.

I'm looking forward to my eleventh year of teaching and my fourth year at DGS.  Before moving to Denver, I taught in Oakland, CA. When I told colleagues that I was going to work at a school with a farm, I think many didn't really believe me. That's actually my goal as a teacher - to make people say, "The fourth graders get to do what?!" This year, I want our class to go on more excursions than any other fourth grade in DPS. When I am not teaching, I enjoy running (slowly), skiing (poorly), and chasing my stepdaughter on a bike (or down a sledding hill).

I am very excited to be back to 4th grade  where I have been teaching since 2011.  Many adults I speak to about my job say something like "4th grade must be great!  I remember 4th grade being my best year!"  and I always agree.  It is my hope that my students someday feel the same.  To help that I hope to create an environment where anyone can thrive, full of learning and community. To make their most memorable year ever I try to fill each day with a little joy, challenge and support students to succeed academically, and be a valuable part of a strong team.  In my own life I try to do the same, creating joy in my interests of physical activity (hockey, cycling, golf, weight lifting, swimming, pickleball and everything else in between.)

I’m very excited to be working with 4th grade this year! I am a student in DU’s graduate program where I am working to get my masters in Elementary Education. My hopes for this year are to create lasting memories with students and leave a positive impact on their educational journey. I want this year to be memorable for them for many reasons! I want us to have fun, explore new things, and build confidence. I love creating memories with my friends and being active. Trips with the girls, weekends away, and spontaneous trips! Especially if it means being outdoors and exploring new things!

I can't wait to work with some of your 4th graders this year! I work with bilingual and multilingual students in third and fourth grades and am here to help your family navigate school systems. I speak English and Spanish and can help connect you with other interpretation and translation. When I'm at home, I enjoy taking care of plants, gardening, hiking, and playing with my 3 dogs and 2 cats. DGS is my second home, and I am so grateful to be on team 4th grade!
