THE CONFERENCE

Introduction

For the last few years, the notion of a circular economy displayed a significant potential in helping ASEAN move toward sustainable development. Experts claim that “the straightest path to sustainable development is circular” (CRI, n.d). Logically, a healthy economy cannot be achieved by an unhealthy society (Makower, 2018). Relative to such a claim, the inextricable connection between circular economy and sustainable development becomes apparent. The concept of a circular economy offers a new economic development paradigm that highlights the adoption of sustainable production and consumption patterns (Berg et al., 2018; ADB, 2020).

Generally, the circular economy principles aim to reduce environmental degradation, climate change, and dependency on finite resources, at the same time, empower the ASEAN region to create economic and environmental co-benefits (ERIA, 2018).

About the logo

The logo symbolizes the importance of sustainable consumption and production to sustain and efficiently use raw materials to protect the environment. The logo has three colors: green, blue, and gray and each color has a representation. The green symbolizes ecology and forest resources, while the blue represents water and renewable resources.  The gray symbolizes a new economic development paradigm that highlights the adoption of sustainable production and consumption patterns.  The other elements that can be found in the logo are the world map and the building. The map signifies the global scope of sustainable endeavor while the building illustrates the emergence of industrialization, production, and thriving cities on the implementation of the circular economy.

The principles of circular economy can be applied to the environment sector as it aims to reduce environmental degradation, climate change, and dependency on finite resources.
