Exhibition Update

Students have been working diligently on their inquiry questions for Exhibition. Many have already handed in their rough drafts of their essay and are encouraged to start on their action plans. Mentors have been meeting with their Exhibition groups and offering them feedback on their research and action plans.

Within the next couple of weeks, please support your child in his/her endeavours by:

    • inviting them to share their action plan
    • offering them suggestions on how to implement their action plan
    • supporting their efforts by recommending resources, people or research material

Exhibition: How to Support Your Child's Learning

Several parents have asked about ways they can support their child as they explore their inquiries for Exhibition. Although students are in grouped together with a common topic, students will be working individually on their personal inquiry. Members of each group who share a topic can share their research and connections, but each students will be responsible for their own inquiry project.

Here are some examples:

Group's Topic: Individual's Inquiry Questions

Child Labour 1. What are some examples of Child Labour in China?

1. What are the consequences of child labour in China?

2. What are the earliest examples of child labour?

2. What are some ways people have tried to stop the practice of child labour?

Although part of the same group, Student 1 and Student 2 have chosen their own lines of inquiry to investigate.

Some possible ways parents can support their child in the Exhibition process:

      • once they have chosen a topic, help them ask deeper, meaningful questions about that topic
      • help them find resources within the community that go beyond textbooks and websites (interview a person who has experience/expertise/connections to that topic)
      • help them stay organized and up to date with due dates for long term projects.

The key components to Exhibition this year include:

  1. A 5-paragraph essay (due end of April)
  2. An action piece that connects their learning to outside the classroom
  3. Showcase their learning in a format that is NOT a poster, Powerpoint or tri-fold. This could be an artifiact, an interactive activity, a model, visuals. It will be the springboard for how they share their learning to visitors at our Exhibition on May 23.

Exhibition: Save the Date

We have some exciting news! The date for Exhibition has been set for Thursday, May 23.

As an IB School, Gr. 6/7s participate in a year-end Celebration of Learning, called Exhibition. For the day, we invite members of our district community, school community, parents and family so students can showcase their in-depth learning in a variety of ways. This year's Exhibition theme has been an ongoing Unit of Inquiry around the Central Idea: Traditions and celebrations reflect our changing values and beliefs.

Students have been learning more about their chosen celebration and are now encouraged to ask deeper questions, use a variety of resources for their research and keep their notes organized. Teachers and Exhibition Mentors will be guiding their inquiry throughout the journey, however, ultimately, it is the students' responsibility to show their learning in a variety of ways. We greatly appreciate the support you can offer at home.

IMPORTANT DATES:

        • February 28 Gr. 7 Course Selection due
        • March 13 Festival of Dangerous Ideas at DSS

TERM 2 UPDATE

As we end the month of January, students in Div. 1 are off to a positive and productive start. We are in the middle of our third Unit of Inquiry, beginning our Math unit on pre-algebra concepts, working on personal narratives, and will soon be comparing the government of Canada with a different country's type of government (See Unit of Inquiry page).

So that your child continues to develop in all areas, please support him/her in keeping up to date with various assignments. Throughout the term, we will be having ongoing projects and assignments that may overlap. Some students may require more support in managing their time. If students need extra support, we have reminded them that they are welcome to come in earlier in the day (8:30) to get some assistance.

Finally, in case the Thank You cards did not make it home, we wanted to send each of you a sincere thank you for all the generous gifts, cards and treats sent to us before the break. (During our clean up time a few days ago, we noticed a few Thank You cards were still in students' desks!). Each special treat and words of support were much appreciated. Thank you!

Multicultural Potluck

As a farewell to our International Students, Sarah & Steven, and to complement our Unit of Inquiry on Traditions & Celebrations, students in Div. 1 will be having a Multicultural Potluck lunch next Thursday, Dec. 20.

Students have been asked to bring a dish to share with the class. The dish can be as simple as an appetizer or a special family recipe. In years past, there was enough food for the entire class if dishes fed about 8-12 people. In case some students have any food sensitivities, please include a label that lists all the ingredients of your dish.

Thank you for supporting your children in this festive endeavour!

Special Request

In a few weeks, our class will be using the new Textiles Cart that the district has created to complement our ADST program at English Bluff.

  • If you have any fabric, of any size, that you would be willing to donate, students in Div. 1 would greatly appreciate it.
  • Also, if you have any knitting needles you could lend your child, many have shown interest in learning. I would be happy to show some students the basics during a lunch hour. It's a relaxing activity students could do during the inside days we may be getting once the weather changes.

Thank you!

There is a survey coming home today. Students are to interview a family member about their cultural traditions. Please complete and return tomorrow.

Lollipop Leadership

Students in Gr. 7 were shown this video during the first week of September. They were asked, “What are ways you can demonstrate ‘lollipop leadership’ moments during your last year at EB?” The responses varied from, “Stepping up whenever help is needed,” to “Being everyday role models for the younger kids.” Several students acknowledged that leadership “does not always have to be big, life-changing actions, but just simple acts of kindness.”
