Welcome to your 6th Grade! My name is Thalia Ormsby and I have been teaching for 13 years in the Del Mar Union School District. I started my career teaching at Ashley Falls in 1st grade. After 7 years I went to 4th grade and then finally found my way to 6th grade. I attended UCLA and received a BA in psychology. At UCLA , I was a full-time student athlete. I played water polo and won 3 National Championships. Half way through my collegiate career I trained and competed on the US Women’s Water Polo Team. One of my greatest accomplishments was making the roster and competing in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Shortly after retiring from water polo I decided to become a teacher. I live in Encinitas with my husband and two kids. My son is 9 and entering 4th grade and my daughter is 8 and is in second grade. You can usually find my family at the pool or at the beach.

The nature of the school system is changing throughout the world. My philosophy is that children today need a learning environment that helps them be well-prepared for the workforce while also recognizing the importance of strengthening their social, emotional, mental, and cognitive well-being. I believe in building my students confidence and helping them feel like an intelligent individual who feel confident and capable of active engagement with the world. I also believe in providing a strong academic curriculum that fosters critical thinking and problem solving. All students need to understand not only the facts presented in books and lectures, but the questions they need to ask based on the information they learn.
Sixth grade is an incredible year where students grow more independent and confident, and become ready for the next phase of their school journey, middle school. Students in 6th grade deepen their understanding of literature by making connections with complex ideas, they sharpen their academic and creative writing skills, and learn strategies to read and research critically. Students engage in new mathematical concepts including ratios and algebra, and deepen their understanding of fractions. Sixth graders explore Ancient Civilizations, noticing commonalities among civilizations that thrived, and they engage in discoveries in Science with topics including genetics, body systems, and the human impact on Earth's climate and weather. Sixth grade is truly an exciting year!
In addition to academic growth, sixth graders learn to manage their time wisely, set priorities, and organize their assignments. They become incredibly independent and learn to self-advocate by communicating with their teacher, and by using all resources available to them. Sixth graders also build close and lasting friendships with their peers and enjoy opportunities for collaborative assignments and teamwork. You can help support and empower your child by giving them the freedom to 'take charge' of their learning.
While things in education may look and feel a little different this year, I am committed to helping your child feel connected to their classmates and enthusiastic about sixth grade. We're going to have a great year!
Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with my family including my husband, Brett, and our children, Gavin and Anika. We enjoy participating in outdoor activities and we can usually be found at the beach or in the pool My favorite hobbies include exercising, reading, and gardening. You can usually find me outside of school hours with a house full of neighborhood kids, eating, playing and enjoying the good company.
