Mrs. Ortega

  • Educational Background and Professional Experience: My educational background includes a bachelor's degree in marine biology from UC Santa Cruz. Once I realized that working with children was my true calling in life, I returned to school at California State University, Long Beach to earn my teaching credential. After my first five years of teaching, I decided it was time to go back school. I attended San Diego State and earned a master's degree in Language Arts. I have been teaching for 27 years. This is my 23rd year teaching third grade in Del Mar.

What to Expect in 3rd Grade

Educational Philosophy

My philosophy of education is that all children are unique and must have a stimulating educational environment where they can grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. It is my desire to create this type of atmosphere where students can meet their full potential. I will provide a safe environment where students are invited to share their ideas and take risks.

What to Expect in 3rd Grade

Third grade is an exciting year! Third  grade is all about fostering independence in a supportive environment to help students as they move through the upper grades.

There are a lot of fun and new concepts introduced this year. In math, we focus on multiplication, division, fractions and solving word problems. We  focus on higher level comprehension skills in reading. In writing, students will be writing multiple paragraph compositions in all three genres: narrative, opinion and informational. Social studies this year is all about local history including the Kumeyaay Indians and San Diego landmarks. In science, we will be learning about how animals adapt to their environments, how animals inherit traits and learn about force and magnets.

Life Outside of the Coyote Den

When I'm not at the coyote den, I love spending time with my family. My husband and I have two boys. Anthony is 12 years old and is in 7th grade. Emilio is 9 years old and is in 4rd grade this year. We also have an adorable fur baby named Ginger.
