Sycamore Ridge School
About Mrs. Mackie:
I am thrilled to be teaching at Sycamore Ridge for my 20th year of service in the Del Mar Union School District. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Studies, and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential with an emphasis in art (CLAD certified). I joined the Sycamore Ridge staff in 2006, for its second year of operation, where I have taught 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. I was honored to be named Sycamore Ridge Teacher of the Year for the 2015-2016 school year. Being a part of this tremendous learning community has allowed me to grow as an educator and find great passion for teaching the upper grades. I strive to make my classroom a student-centered space which fosters curiosity, exploration, creativity, and FUN! My hope is that all children in my care feel safe, valued, and loved. When the classroom culture is warm and nurturing, students will naturally feel the freedom to wonder, ask questions, find answers, and seek out new and innovative ways to solve meaningful problems.

The natural curiosity of students is at the heart of my approach to teaching in the upper grades at Sycamore Ridge. Children crave opportunities for exploration and discovery, which is vital to their retention of knowledge. I value the importance of problem solving & critical thinking, building resilience through challenging thinking tasks, and uncovering student interests and passions in the classroom. I believe the classroom is a place where students should experience engaging learning opportunities, master grade level skills, and learn the social emotional skills that foster healthy relationships in life.
Sixth grade is unique in that it is the year that students are becoming more independent and are preparing for middle school. Students in sixth grade are ENGAGED readers. This year, students will be reading and analyzing rich literary and informational texts. Students in sixth grade are THOUGHTFUL writers. We will be writing (many) narrative, argumentative, and informational pieces this year. My hope is that students will leave sixth grade as excellent communicators! In sixth grade, students will engage in a variety of thinking routines where their thoughts will be voiced, heard, and valued by others. Students in sixth grade are PROBLEM-SOLVERS. Our mathematicians will practice reasoning abstractly and quantitatively through our studies of ratios, fractions, percents, statistics, and geometry. Students will also be learning about ancient civilizations in Social Studies. In Science, students will be engaging in topics including, genetics, body systems, and the environment.
*Enrolled students, logged into their @delmarschools.org accounts can access Google Classroom through the Student Links page.

Here is our daily class schedule.
I have a wonderful husband, Scott, and two beautiful sons, Reed (14) and Graham (12). Reed is off and running as he embarks on his final year of middle school as an 8th grader, while Graham is looking forward to his first fantastic year in middle school as a 6th grader. Our favorite family activities include spending our days at the beach, enjoying camping trips with our travel trailer, as well as hiking and exploring across our beautiful state. Scott and I have enjoyed snowboarding together for the last 20+ years, and in the winter we are frequent Mammoth Mountain and Lake Tahoe visitors. We love being outdoors and enjoying all that nature has to offer. Other personal hobbies of mine include: practicing Pilates, sketching, cooking, reading, and hiking on on my local trails.
