I have been a special education teacher in Del Mar Union School District for 22 years. I hold a Master’s Degree in Special Education, a bachelor’s degree in Multiple Subject Elementary Education, an Assistive Technology certification, CLAD certification, and a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts.

I began my teaching career in Burlington, Vermont as a preschool teacher. I have since held positions as a special education paraprofessional, Kindergarten and 1st grade teacher, migrant education teacher, Functional Life Skills teacher, and a Learning Lab Education Specialist. I am currently teaching an upper grade Alternative Learning Curriculum Class (ALC) at Del Mar Heights

What to Expect in an Alternative Learning Curriculum Classroom

The Alternative Learning Curriculum class uses Unique Learning System ® curriculum.  This curriculum program has been designed specifically for children with special learning needs.  Unique Learning System ® is a common core aligned curriculum with the foundation being academic content standards (reading, writing, math, science and social studies).   The lessons are modified to make sure that all children have a way to participate and learn. There is a strong emphasis on life skills that are embedded in each lesson.

Unique Learning System provides monthly units that teachers are able to access from the Unique website.  Each month there is a new topic built around a science or social studies theme. There are six grade bands; Preschool, Elementary, Intermediate, Middle School, High School and Transition, so learning is new as children progress through the years. Your child’s teacher has selected the grade level band that matches the ages and grades of the children in his/her classroom. There is also a three-year cycle of new units for each grade band.  In that way, a child will have new learning materials even if he or she is in the same classroom setting next year.

Life Outside of the Heights

Originally from Vermont, my husband and I moved to San Diego in 1999.  We have 5 adult children and 2 grand children split between California and Vermont.  I spend time  with family in Vermont each summer.   Together we enjoy hiking, boating, SCUBA diving, and road tripping.  My creative hobbies include crocheting and ceramics.
