Philosophy & What to Expect in

The Primary Art Studio and Upper Grade Art Lab

In our studio the child is the artist.  Here we will learn to think, act, observe, and work like artists do!  This year, our kid creators will continue to engage with the art making process, fusing passion, curiosity, and the power of artistic voice.

Our K-3 students will continue to develop foundational skills as we add to our artist "toolbox". As we grow and develop craftsmanship with a wide variety of mediums, content, and purpose our young creators will continue to implement more individual choice into their productions and studio time.

In our upper grade Art Lab  we  will dive deeper into our choice-based arts education.  Students are tasked with reflecting throughout the art making process as we begin to tackle abstract concepts. Together we will not only fine tune our skills, but discover new ways to synthesize our practices to make more meaningful and personal creative opportunities. During our studio time we will fuse art with technology as our exploratory model ignites new passions and helps us discover inspiration in the world around.

Creating and problem solving are deeply personal, often messy, but most of all JOYFUL!  We will continue to hone our skills as craftsman, communicators, and creators while celebrating the true unique spirit of the arts and our young scholars.

With your support we will continue to reach new heights at The Heights!

Life Outside the Ocean

I joined DMUSD in 2019 as an Art Specialist.  I am originally from Northern California where I spent 10 years as a 4th grade classroom teacher and served as the district STEAM instructor.  Prior, I taught in Orange County, and that's when I first fell in love with the true spirit of student centered learning through STEAM education.

You might spot Mr. C walking on the beach, in downtown Del Mar, or at One Paseo.  Be sure to stop me and introduce yourself and family! My favorite mediums are paint, clay, and the digital lens.  However, most of my productions are mixed medium as I continue to explore and learn just as our young artists do.
