The Nature of the Personal Project
The personal project is an opportunity to engage in an independent and age-appropriate exploration into an area of personal interest. Through a cycle of inquiry, action, and reflection, the personal project helps students to develop the attributes of the IB learner profile; provides students with an essential opportunity to demonstrate approaches to learning (ATL) skills; and fosters the development of independent, lifelong learners.
Before students begin working on their personal projects, they consider the following questions:
What do you think a personal project is?
What is a personal project for?
Who could be involved in your personal project?
When do you complete your personal project?
How much time will you spend on your personal project?
Setting your own goal, choose how to achieve it, and create your success criteria. Deciding what ATL skills will you develop and demonstrate. Also, reflect on the impact that the personal project has had on you or your community.
Through the personal project, students:
explore an interest that is personally meaningful (intellectual curiosity; family connection; social, cultural or geographical relevance; individual passion; etc)
take ownership of their learning by undertaking a self-directed inquiry
transfer and apply skills in pursuit of a learning goal and the creation of a product
recognize and evidence personal growth and development.
What connections can we identify between the personal project and the Diploma Programme?
The DP core includes the extended essay, theory of knowledge (TOK) and creativity, activity, service (CAS).The potential community or service connections of a project will directly mirror CAS, while the public sharing of the personal project prepares students for the TOK exhibition. While the personal project enables students to pursue their personal interests further in the MYP, the DP extended essay enables students to pursue an academic interest through a research essay. The personal project is not necessarily a research essay; however, personal projects usually involve research, including the use and collection of information and sources.
