The International Baccalaureate® aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
The International Baccalaureate® (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) emphasizes intellectual challenge.
It encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world, preparing them for success in further study and in life. The IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) is designed for students aged 11 to 16. This period, encompassing early puberty and mid-adolescence, is a particularly critical phase of personal and intellectual development and requires a programme that helps students participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world. Learning how to learn and how to evaluate information critically is as important as learning facts.
Curriculum documents are published in English, French, Spanish and Chinese but schools may offer the programme in other languages. The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is one of three programmes offered by the IB.
The curriculum contains eight subject groups together with a core made up of five areas of interaction. More information about the Middle Years Programme can be found on the IB public website.
The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning.
The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.
Research shows that students participating in the MYP:
build confidence in managing their own learning
learn by doing, connecting the classroom to the larger world
consistently have greater success in IB Diploma Programme examinations
thrive in positive school cultures where they are engaged and motivated to excel
develop an understanding of global challenges and a commitment to act as responsible citizens.
