Math

We have a new math curriculum this year called Ready Math. We will be doing 70 minutes of math daily, and there will be no math homework sent home unless class work isn’t finished in a timely manner. However, we encourage you to practice multiplication and division facts at home to increase fact fluency.

Literacy

The best way to become a better reader is to read! We encourage each student to read at least 20 minutes each night. We also encourage you to read with and to your child. Reading to your child allows them to access higher level texts that would otherwise be inaccessible to them. We will also have a reading incentive program that your child will be learning about the first week of school.

We will be doing LOTS of reading in my class! The children will learn different strategies to help them become better readers. Your child is getting to the point where there is a switch from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” As students get older, they will be expected to read to learn. So, it is critical that I do a good job helping them in their reading strategies! This is something we work on daily and across all subject areas.

Writing Workshop is also a part of our literacy block. During this time, students will be learning different strategies to become strong writers. The DeForest Area School District uses the Lucy Calkins model for Reading and Writing Workshop. During the school year, we will focus on four different units of study, which bring the kids through writing fiction, persuasion, historical fiction, and literary essays.

Snack

We will have snack and milk during our read-aloud each day. The kids are responsible for bringing in their own snack each day. Please no cookies, chips or other junk food. Growing brains need healthful snack choices! However, if it is your child’s birthday and they want to bring in a special treat to share with the class, that is just fine! We like to celebrate birthdays! Please be aware that the birthday treats need to be nut-free.

Folders

Your child will be bringing their Take-Home Folder back and forth every day. Work and notes from school are in this folder. Please look through this folder each night.

Assignment Notebooks

Students will be bringing home an assignment notebook every day. This needs to be signed by a parent each night. This is a great communication tool for parents and teachers! I look at the assignment notebooks every morning, so feel free to write any messages for me in their books. Although we have no homework (besides reading minutes), the kids will be writing in their notebooks what we are working on in class.

Behavior Plan

Each classroom at Windsor participates in the school-wide behavior plan that focuses on teaching positive behavior and uses “high-fives.” Children earn “high-fives” for positive behavior and can pick off a prize menu after they earn 25 individual “high-fives.” As a class, they will work towards classroom “high-fives” as a group.

In my classroom, we will work together to come up with our Classroom Constitution. We all agree on the rules and will sign and post our Constitution. I will take care of any discipline issues on an individual basis.

Let’s work together to make a successful year for your child!

Email or call with ANY concerns or questions. We are a team, helping your child to reach their full potential as a learner.
