Core Connections 3

Course Description:

This is a full-year math class that meets five days a week for 50 minutes per day. You will be exposed to many different mathematical concepts and ways of looking at and thinking about math throughout the course. The CPM Core Connections program follows a spiral design where mastery of content is not expected immediately. Rather, the continued practice of the concepts throughout the course is expected to lead to mastery over time.

Course Objectives:

• Learn to use new models and methods to think about problems

• Develop mathematical tools and learn new ways of thinking about and investigating situations

• Make connections to other mathematical concepts

• Explain your mathematical thinking

• Discover relationships

• Figure out what strategies can be used to solve problems

• Work collaboratively with other students in a team learning environment

Three Pillars of the CPM Program:

    1. Students learn ideas more deeply when they discuss ideas with classmates.

    2. Students learn ideas more usefully for other arenas when they learn by attacking problems—ideally from the real world.

    3. Students learn ideas more permanently when they are required to engage and re-engage with the ideas for months or even years.

During Class:

    • Students are expected to be respectful and show good character in class and with other students.

    • Students are expected to come to class with all work completed by the beginning of class the day that the assignment is due.

    • Students are expected to come to class on time with *all necessary materials ready to work.

    • *Pencil, math book, binder with paper and graph paper. A spiral bound graphing notebook is recommended.

    • Students are expected to see the instructor if they have any questions or need any additional assistance.

    • Bringing a water bottle filled with water to drink during class is encouraged.
