Readout 2025 October 5-11, 2025.
Readout hosts put on a book discussion with a team of friends (virtual or in person), set a financial goal for their team, and ask their attendees to contribute to defending democracy in their community by donating to Defense of Democracy.
Moderators help lead a virtual book discussion and fundraising celebration or join an in-person event in their community hosted by a Defense of Democracy volunteer. These events celebrate Banned Books Week while raising funds to fuel our ongoing fight for intellectual freedom, inclusive education, and the right to read.
The Registration fee for hosts is $30 which covers the cost of your Readout Host T-shirt and welcome materials.
If you make a $60 donation, you will also cover the fee for a veteran.
If you make a $90 donation, you will cover the fee for a veteran AND a student.
Why do we celebrate Banned Books Week?
Censorship: To draw attention to the consequences of restricting access to books, ideas, and information.
Freedom of Expression: To affirm the importance of the First Amendment and the individual’s right to read and explore diverse viewpoints.
Awareness: To raise public understanding about the ongoing challenges and bans that affect schools, libraries, and communities.
Diversity of Voices: To highlight and protect stories, perspectives, and authors, particularly those from marginalized groups, that are often silenced.
Empowerment: To inspire readers to think critically, make informed choices, and advocate for intellectual freedom for all.
