September 22, 2025 - Clothing Drive in Memory of Madison Levy
Good Morning Deer Park,
I hope this email finds you well and that you are having a great start to the new school year. The Deer Park School District is seeking your help!
There will be a clothing drive on Saturday, September 27th from 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. in memory of our student Madison Levey. Madison was a bright light in our community who passed away in February of 2021.
For Maddie’s 14th birthday her family has once again organized a clothing drive where all money earned will be donated to the Make a Wish Foundation. Make a Wish granted Madison her wish to meet her superhero - Super Girl during the summer of 2017. The entire family was flown to Vancouver where Madison and her family spent the day on the set with Melissa Benoit (Super Girl). Madison even directed a scene! It was an amazing trip for Madison and her family.
Madison’s family seeks to give back to one child per year by fulfilling their wish through the Make a Wish Foundation. It means so much to Madison’s family to reach their goal of collecting 100 bags of clothing!
Please consider donating in memory of our Super Girl Madison! You can find more information on the flyer found here.
Thank you for your anticipated participation!

Alicia Konecny

Dear JFK Families,
Today we recognized September 11th with a poem, a moment of silence, and flag plantings. We encouraged our students to honor the memory of those we lost by performing acts of kindness.
We would also like to remind you that Meet the Teacher Night will take place on Wednesday, September 17th. The schedule is as follows:
5:45 – 6:10 Welcome by Administration & Overview of JFK

September 11, 2025 - Patriot Day
Dear Parents, Staff, and Community Members,
Tomorrow, September 11, is recognized as Patriot Day. I want to take a moment with you to reflect on the significance of this day. September 11, 2001 forever changed our nation, and it continues to hold deep and lasting meaning here in Deer Park, where many of our families were directly impacted.
This day reminds us of the strength, unity, and resilience of the American people. It is also a time to honor the courage and sacrifice shown by so many.
In our schools, students will take part in commemorations such as flag planting, special readings, announcements, and classroom lessons. In addition, at 6PM tomorrow, our varsity football team will play their first home game of the season with the theme “First Responder Night,” honoring the Deer Park families affected by the tragic events of September 11. These moments not only honor the past but also help our students understand the importance of remembrance, unity, and hope.
As a community, let us come together to remember, to honor, and to stand strong—today and always.
Sincerely,
Mr. Cummings

September 10, 2025 - Important Reminders and Updates
Dear JFK Parents,
Today we conducted our first lockdown drill of the school year. Officers from the First Precinct were present to observe, and we thank them for taking time out of their busy day to support us in keeping our school safe.
We would also like to remind you of our bus dismissal procedures. An adult must be present at the bus stop for the driver to release your child. If you would like your child to be dropped off without an adult present, you must complete a permission slip and return it to the school. Without this permission, if no adult is at the bus stop, your child will be brought back to JFK. Please note that this creates a significant delay for the primary buildings, so we appreciate your cooperation.
Now that we have completed our first week, buses have been consistently pulling out of the JFK parking lot at 3:15 p.m. Please plan to be at your child’s bus stop on time. For your convenience, we have attached the permission slip should you need one.
Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep our students safe.
Sincerely,
JFK Administration

September 5, 2025 - Office for People With Development Disabilities (OPWDD) - FIRST STEPS
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I’m excited to welcome you to the new school year as your Districtwide Transition Coordinator, here to guide and support students and families as they explore new opportunities and experiences. My role is to provide support, connect you with resources, and help your child prepare for postsecondary opportunities—whether that includes employment, further education, or other meaningful community experiences.
One program that often assists students in this journey is OPWDD (Office for People With Developmental Disabilities):
OPWDD supports individuals with developmental disabilities to live full, independent lives and access community and work opportunities.
To qualify for OPWDD services, a student must have a documented developmental disability that:
Began before age 22 – The disability must have been present during childhood or adolescence.
Results in substantial functional limitations – The student must demonstrate significant deficits and delays in areas such as self-care, learning, communication, or social skills that impact daily life.
Requires services beyond what typical community resources provide – The student’s needs must exceed what is available through school or community programs alone.
Step 1: Watch the OPWDD Front Door Information Videos
Learn more about the eligibility process and services offered (available in English, Spanish, and Chinese)
Call 1-866-946-9733 for additional support
Step 2: Connect to a Care Coordination Organization (CCO)
OPWDD works with Care Coordination Organizations (CCOs) to help families develop and maintain service plans. You will need to enroll with a CCO and get assigned a Care Coordinator who will:
Guide you through the OPWDD eligibility determination process
Help with the Level of Care Eligibility Determination process
Assist in enrolling in Medicaid and applying for the Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Medicaid Waiver
There are three CCOs providing services in NYC:
Advanced Care Alliance (ACA): 833-MYCANY
Care Design NY: 1-518-235-1888
Tri-County Care: 1-844-504-8400 (currently on pause)
You may choose one of these CCOs. For more information, visit Find a Care Manager. Once assigned, the Care Coordinator will assist you in applying and submitting your child’s application for eligibility determination.
Applying to OPWDD can be a long and sometimes challenging process, but you are not alone. I’m here to answer your questions and help you navigate each step.
Please feel free to reach out anytime at (631) 274-4147 or connolly.k@deerparkschool.org.
I’m looking forward to a wonderful year ahead, filled with new endeavors, growth, and successes.
Warm regards,
Kimberly Connolly
September 4, 2025 - Important Safety Message
Yesterday, near the Fabio Buttita park, a man approached a student. The man was described as being 5'7" with a darker complexion.
Now that schools are in session and students are walking and riding bikes to and from school, it's a good reminder to tell them:
Be aware of their surroundings
Do not talk to strangers
Immediately report any uncomfortable interactions to a trusted adult
Thank you
September 3, 2025 - JFK Police Activity
Dear JFK Families,
We had a very eventful morning. Before arrival, one of our minibuses’ side mirrors struck an AC unit, causing it to fall and break a window. At the time, there was one student on the bus and no students inside the building. Thankfully, the student was unharmed and sustained no injuries.
Out of an abundance of caution, police and EMS arrived at JFK to take a report. We are grateful for the swift response from our first responders, including the local Fire Department and the Suffolk County 1st Precinct.
The situation was handled quickly, and the building remained safe at all times. As always, the safety of our students is our top priority, and we wanted to share this information with you directly.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Kelly Benson
September 2, 2025 - Great First Day!
Dear JFK Family,
We are off to a wonderful start, and I want to thank you for making the first day such a success! Your hard work, preparation, and positive energy helped create a welcoming and smooth transition for our students.
As always, we know the beginning of the school year can come with a few bumps along the way. Please do not hesitate to reach out if any issues arise. If you encounter scheduling concerns, contact Shaun. For curriculum needs, please connect with Jenny.
To support our 3rd graders as they continue learning routines, tomorrow our available permanent substitutes will visit classrooms to guide students in where to drop off notes and lunch counts. They will also assist with end-of-day dismissal by helping students to the walker circle and SCOPE program.
We are truly excited for the year ahead. We see how hard each of you works every day to ensure our students are successful, and we are deeply grateful for your dedication and commitment. Thank you for everything you do for our school community.
With appreciation,
Kelly, Shaun & Jenny
September 2, 2025 - Welcome Back!
Dear JFK Families,
What a wonderful first day we had here at JFK! It was such a joy to see so many familiar, smiling faces, along with welcoming new students to our community. Each school year brings new opportunities and adventures, and we are excited to see all that this year has in store.
Today, students spent time becoming familiar with classroom routines and expectations. Our new students also learned about the layout of the building and where everything is located. To continue supporting a smooth transition, tomorrow our staff will once again assist our 3rd graders as they get off the bus to help them navigate to their classrooms. With the many caring staff members stationed throughout the hallways, we know they will have it down in just a few days!
We also appreciate your patience with buses during this first week. It is common for buses to run a little later than usual as students and staff adjust to new routines. It takes a few days for students to become familiar with where to go for buses and car rider dismissal. By next week, we anticipate that dismissal will be running more smoothly, with buses pulling out of the JFK parking lot by approximately 3:15 p.m.
Teachers also reviewed our emergency guidelines today so that students understand what to do should an emergency arise. Later this week, on Thursday and Friday, we will hold our annual behavior assemblies. During these sessions, the administration will review school-wide expectations, as well as important safety protocols for fire drills, lockouts, and lockdowns. We will also reinforce the importance of not opening exterior doors for anyone—even if it is someone they know. We kindly ask that you reinforce this important safety rule at home as well. We will have our first fire drill some time this week.
As Mr. Cummings shared in his welcome letter, please be reminded of our new cell phone policy. If students bring a cell phone or Apple Watch to school, it must remain turned off and stored in their backpack inside their locker during the school day.
We are looking forward to a successful and rewarding school year. Thank you for your continued partnership and support in helping us make JFK a safe, positive, and engaging place for all students.
Warm regards,
JFK Administration Team

September 1, 2025 - Welcome Back
Dear Parents, Staff, and Community Members,
I hope you had a chance to enjoy the summer and spend some time with family and friends. It’s hard to believe, but here we are, ready to start another school year—and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome our students back tomorrow, Tuesday, September 2.
A lot has been happening behind the scenes to get us ready for the new year. Our buildings and grounds crew, along with our custodians, have been working all summer long cleaning, repairing, and making improvements so that our schools are in great shape for day one. They’ve done an outstanding job, and we’re grateful for all their hard work.
Last Wednesday and Thursday, our teachers were back in the buildings setting up classrooms and preparing for their students’ arrival. The energy was contagious—it’s always inspiring to see how much effort they put into making sure everything is ready for the first day.
As we begin the year, each school will be going over emergency procedures with students, both in the opening weeks and throughout the year, to make sure our schools remain safe.
Families should also know that the new statewide cell phone ban will be in effect this year. Principals will be sharing building-specific information so you’ll know exactly what that will look like in each school.
Most importantly, we are so excited to welcome our students back. The first day always brings a sense of excitement and possibility, and I know this year will be full of great moments, growth, and accomplishments.
Thank you, as always, for your support. I’m looking forward to a safe, successful, and positive school year together.
Sincerely,
Mr. Cummings

August 5, 2025 - Important Message From Mr. Cummings
NYS Cellphone Policy
Dear Families,
As you are most likely aware, beginning with the 2025–2026 school year, all New York State school districts are required to implement Governor Hochul’s Distraction-Free Schools initiative. This statewide mandate is designed to reduce digital distractions and improve student engagement by restricting the use of Internet-enabled devices during the entire school day—from the first bell to the last—including classroom time, lunch, and study halls.
To comply with this directive, the District convened a committee of stakeholders to develop a Board of Education policy in alignment with the Governor’s requirements. This policy was formally adopted at the July 29, 2025, Board of Education meeting and will be implemented beginning on the first day of school.
Key points of the policy include:
All students (K–12) are encouraged to leave Internet-enabled devices at home.
Elementary students who bring devices must ensure they are silenced and stored in backpacks, which will be kept in their classroom cubby (MM & JQA) or locker (JFK).
Middle and high school students must keep silenced devices stored in their individually assigned lockers for the duration of the school day.
The full policy can be found on our website by following this link.
In the coming weeks, building administrators will provide more specific information about how the policy will be enforced at each school, including methods of communication should you need to reach your child. Once school is in session, administrators will review the policy with students, explain its intent, and answer any questions.
While there was discussion around the use of device pouches—particularly in light of funding Governor Hochul announced for such measures—it was determined that the cost, which would have exceeded $60,000 on top of the funding, was not a fiscally responsible option for our district at this time.
We recognize that this represents a significant change and sincerely appreciate your support and cooperation as we implement this statewide initiative.
Sincerely,
Mr. Cummings
Superintendent

You can also find these lists and other updates from the PFC and the school on the JFK website.
Enjoy the rest of your summer—we can’t wait to welcome all of our students back on the first day of school!

April 9, 2025 - NYS Testing
Dear JFK Parents,
This morning students scheduled to take the ELA State Assessment experienced a delayed start due to a statewide issue with the testing software. As you may know, New York State now utilizes Computer-Based Testing (CBT) for these assessments and today's disruption impacted schools across the state.
We are pleased to share that the issue has been resolved, and students completed day 1 and day 2 of the test. If your child was absent yesterday or today, they will make up the test some time this week.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Warm Regards,
The JFK Administration Team
April 7, 2025 - JFK NYS Testing Tomorrow
John F. Kennedy Intermediate School will administer the New York State (NYS) tests using computer-based testing, beginning tomorrow April 8th and April 9th.
Since all students will be using Chromebooks for these assessments, please ensure your child brings a fully charged Chromebook to school on the test days. This will help ensure a smooth testing experience for everyone.
If you have any questions, please contact the main office at (631) 274-4310.
Kind regards,
The JFK Administration Team
April 3, 2025 - NYS Testing 2024-2025
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Each year, the NYS Education Department administers the New York State Grades 3-8 Assessments in ELA and Math, and the Grade 5 and 8 Assessment in Science. This year, the Assessments will be administered as Computer-Based Tests (CBT). All NYS tests will be taken utilizing a Chromebook. To ensure a smooth testing experience, please make sure your student's Chromebook is fully charged before each test day.
Students are scheduled to take the 3rd through 5th grade NYS Computer-Based Test (CBT) on the following dates:
April 8th and 9th - NYS ELA Test - Grades 3, 4 and 5
April 29th and 30th - NYS Math Test - Grades 3, 4 and 5
May 12th - NYS Science Test - 5th Grade Only
The NYS ELA, Math, and Science tests provide valuable insights into your child's academic skills, helping educators tailor instruction to their needs. While no single assessment fully reflects student achievement, these tests, combined with classroom performance, teacher feedback, and other diagnostics, offer a clearer picture of progress. Additionally, the results provide an objective measure of your child's performance relative to peers across New York State, guiding curriculum, instruction, and program planning at the school and district levels. For more information, please visit https://www.nysed.gov/state-assessment/parent-resources.
If you have any further questions, please email contact the main office at (631) 274-4310.
Sincerely,
The John F Kennedy Administration Team

The safety and security of our students remain our top priority. As we move into spring, we’d like to share a few important reminders:
If you are dropping off an item for your child (Chromebook, book, lunch, etc.), please do not expect to wait for them to come down and pick it up. Our security team will ensure your child receives the item. Keep in mind that students may be in the middle of a lesson or taking a test and may not be able to leave class immediately.
If you need to pick up your child early for an appointment or other reasons, notifying the school in advance is helpful. This allows us to have your child ready when you arrive. Please call (631) 274-4300 to inform us.
If you pick up your child during their lunch period without prior notice, there may be a delay in their release as we locate them in the lunchroom or on the recess field.
If you are visiting the school for an event, please remember to bring a valid ID.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school safe and organized!
Best,
Kelly Benson

February 24, 2025 - Attendance Notification ~ ParentSquare
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We are implementing a new notification procedure for student absences starting today. Moving forward, we will use ParentSquare to notify you when your child is absent from school or late to school.
If your child is marked absent or late, you will receive a notification via text or email (based on your ParentSquare settings) at 11:00 AM. You will then have the option to submit an absence note or provide a reason directly through ParentSquare. Our attendance aide will receive this information in real time.
As this is our first week using the system, we appreciate your patience as we work through any initial glitches. If you receive a notification in error, please don’t worry—just call the school to verify your child’s attendance.
Robert Frost and the High School have been successfully using this system since the beginning of the year, and we are excited to bring it to our school as well.
Thank you for your support and cooperation as we roll out this new process.
Best regards,
Kelly Benson

It takes courage to stand in front of the entire school community and share a vision for how to make it a better place. Each student who participated should be extremely proud of themselves—they did an incredible job!
Unfortunately, JFK experienced some Wi-Fi outages today, which prevented the entire student body from casting their votes. Due to this, we will be extending voting until tomorrow, allowing students who didn’t vote today to do so then.

October 31, 2024 - Lock Out Activity 10-31-24
Good afternoon JFK Family,
This afternoon at approximately 2:38 PM we conducted a Lock Out activity in the building. The activity was executed as a result of a staff member becoming ill. As a result, we had to call 911 who sent an ambulance to assess the situation. The entire activity took twenty-four minutes, and an "All Clear" announcement was issued at 3:02 just in time for the dismissal of school. We want to commend all staff, students and visiting parents who were in the building for Halloween celebrations on a job well done throughout this situation. Thank you for always understanding that we put our school community's safety and security as the number one priority on a daily basis.
Respectfully,
JFK Administration
October 23, 2024 - Fire Drill/ Reunification Drill
Good afternoon JFK Family,
This afternoon we conducted a Fire Drill in which the entire school community exited the building in one minute and fifty-eight seconds. Once all classes were settled into their designated areas, we then transitioned into our Reunification Drill which consisted of the entire school community going to the side of the field in back of our transportation building. As an entire school community consisting of over a thousand individuals, we were able to relocate and reunite in this designated area in an orderly and timely manner. The entire drill from the start to the end was completed in nine minutes and forty seconds. The purpose of a Reunification Drill is for the entire school community to gather in one central location if for some reason we were not permitted back into building due to a safety issue (Fire, gas leak etc.). We have to commend all students and faculty for their effort in making this a successful drill. As mentioned in previous messages, we will continue to do our due diligence to plan and be prepared for any situation that might possibly arise to ensure the safety and security of all members of the school community.
Respectfully,
JFK Administration

October 2, 2024 - Club Start Up Days
Hello JFK Family,
We just want to remind everyone that we will be beginning clubs next week Tuesday and Wednesday after school. If your child was accepted into a club, you should have received a letter from the club advisor informing you of specific details pertaining to when and where the clubs will be taking place. Please read the acceptance letter carefully because there are clubs that begin next week and some that do not begin until later in the year. There are also some morning clubs that require a parent drop off. If your child did not receive a letter, please do not send them to a club because that would mean they did not get accepted into that specific club. All students who signed up were placed in a club even if it was their second option. Finally, a reminder that if your child is taking the late bus home, the first day of clubs usually takes the drivers a little time to get their bus routes down so please be patient with this process. September 26, 2024 - Lock Out Drill 09-26-24
Good morning JFK Family,
This morning at 9:35 AM we conducted our first Lock Out Drill of the school year. The drill was successfully expedited by all staff and students which continues to allow us to be prepared for any possible future crisis that might occur. Just for clarification, a Lock Down Drill allows us to secure the building from an internal threat and a Lock Out drill enables us to secure the building from an external threat. To date, we have conducted five fire drills, one Lock Down and today's Lock Out drill for a total of seven drills for the school year. We just need one more drill prior to December 1st to meet the NYS requirement for mandated drills. As usual, we thank you for all that you do to partner with us to keep JFK a safe and secure environment.
Respectfully,
JFK Administration
September 24, 2024 - Emergency Drills
Dear JFK Parents,
We wanted to inform you that on Thursday, September 26th, our school will be conducting a lockdown drill. This drill is part of our commitment to ensuring the safety and security of our students and staff. A lockdown drill helps us prepare for situations that may pose an immediate threat to our school building.
Rest assured, your child's teacher has already explained the procedures for this kind of situation, and they are well-prepared for the drill. Additionally, your children will be informed ahead of time that this is just a drill, allowing us to practice in a calm and controlled manner.
These drills are essential in helping both our students and staff be ready for any potential emergency. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you for your continued support.

Owing to time constraints, we ask you not to discuss your child individually with his or her teacher on that evening but to wait for the conference days that have been scheduled. If you have any pressing concern, please, call your child’s teacher directly to request a meeting for another time.

This night is intended to be an evening for adults. For many, it is the only opportunity during the school year to meet with teachers and get information regarding classroom expectations and procedures, as well as educational objectives. To that end, I ask that you do not bring your child or any of his or her siblings to school for the evening. We do not have babysitting available.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call. The building administrators will be about the building to welcome you. We look forward to meeting you on this very important evening.
Sincerely,
Kelly Benson
September 12, 2024 - Lock Down Drill
Good morning JFK Family,
We conducted our first Lock Down drill of the school year this morning at 9:30 AM. The drill was executed in a successful manner by all students and faculty. All members of the school community adhered to the protocols associated with this drill. As successful as the drill was, we were able to identify areas of improvement that can be made. Subsequently, we will be implementing resolutions to those area of concerns immediately. As we usually tell our students the old adage "That practice makes us better" and we are committed to making JFK the most safe and secure environment that it can be. Thank you in advance for your continued support and assistance with helping us educate your children.
Mr. McLeod
September 11, 2024 - JFK Updates
Dear JFK Family,
This week, we will continue practicing our emergency drills. We're pleased to share that during our last fire drill, we reduced our evacuation time to 1 minute and 47 seconds! Additionally, we will be conducting a lockdown drill tomorrow. Lockdowns are used to secure the building and grounds during incidents that pose an immediate threat of violence. During a lockdown, students remain in their classrooms or whatever room they are in. Your child's teacher has reviewed the lockdown procedures with their class to ensure everyone knows what to do. If you find yourself at the school during one of our drills, I’ve included a school emergency information guide. Here you will find what to do if you happen to be in the building.
This week, we also held our behavior assemblies, where we discussed expectations for the school year. We reviewed our SOAR values, which stand for Show Kindness, Own Actions, Act Safely, and Respect Everyone and Everything. Additionally, we spoke about the New York State Dignity for All Students Act (DASA), which ensures that no student is subjected to harassment or discrimination in school. We emphasized the power of words and the importance of making everyone feel safe when they come to school. At JFK, we do not tolerate any comments or actions that make others feel unsafe.
Today we observed a moment of silence for those we lost on 9/11/01. We encouraged students that the best way to honor those lost, is to do an act of kindness for someone.
Thank you for your continued support in creating a positive and safe environment for all students.
Warm regards,
JFK Administration Team
September 6, 2024 - JFK Buses
Greetings JFK Families,
We thank you for your patience this week with the buses. Yesterday the buses rolled out of JFK at 3:17, which is almost the usual time. We ask that you be at your child's bus stop at 3:15.
If you give your child permission to get off the bus without an adult present, then you must fill out this form, Student Dismissal Letter. If this form is not filled out, we cannot allow your child off the bus without an adult present.
We thank you for your cooperation with this.
Warm regards,
Kelly Benson

September 4, 2024 - Today's Fire Drill
Good morning,
This is Mr. McLeod the Associate Principal of John F. Kennedy Intermediate School. Today we conducted our first fire drill of the school year at 10:00 AM. All students and staff exited the building in a quick, quiet and orderly manner making the drill very successful. The timing of this first fire drill was two minutes and twelve seconds. Our goal for our fire drills will be to get under two minutes, which I am confident we will achieve in the upcoming weeks. Please stay alert for future notices on our progress.
September 3, 2024 - First Day of School
Dear JFK Families,
Today marked a wonderful start to the new school year at John F. Kennedy Intermediate! We were thrilled to welcome our students back with open arms. It was heartening to see so many smiling faces as they stepped off the buses, ready to begin a new year. Some were excited, while others were a bit nervous, but all were greeted warmly by their teachers who were eager to start the day with them.
I’m sure your child will come home with plenty of stories to share about their first day. As we settle into the school routine, I want to inform you about some important activities happening in the coming weeks.
Over the next week or so, we will be conducting emergency drills to ensure that our students are well-prepared in case of an emergency. Today, your child's teacher took time to explain what to expect during these drills. Please take a moment to remind your child of the importance of practicing these safety procedures, as they help us all be prepared and confident in the event of a real emergency.
Next week, we will be holding assemblies for each grade level to discuss what SOAR means here at JFK. SOAR stands for: Show Kindness, Own Actions, Act Safely, and Respect everyone and everything. These values are at the heart of our school community, and we are committed to helping every student embody them throughout the school year. During these assemblies, students will also have the opportunity to meet our Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) staff, which includes our social worker, psychologist, and guidance counselor.
We are looking forward to an incredible year ahead and are honored that you entrust us with the opportunity to be a part of your child's day. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Warm regards,

Good Afternoon JFK Families,
Today at approximately 1:oopm, there was a traffic stop that took place in the parking lot between JFK and the Transportation Building. We immediately initiated our emergency procedures and implemented a lock out. Students were not outside at the time of the incident. Classes that were located on that side of the building were relocated until all police activity left the parking lot. We commend our students and staff for following directions and implementing the lock out successfully. This is why we practice our emergency procedures.
Thank you,

After school activities, including sports practices, alternative high school, and the boys’ bowling match will take place, but will all conclude by 5:30 so we can get everyone home safely.
I hope everyone stays safe and fares well with the expected storm.

January 3, 2024 - JFK ~ NY Islanders
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Happy New Year! We are very excited to team up with the New York Islanders and begin our first ever floorball unit. We are trying to shift from floor hockey to floorball. Though extremely similar, floorball students have higher success in controlling and handling the ball. Floorball equipment is lighter and easier to control and the blades have soft round edges. The Islanders will be donating nearly a thousand dollars worth of equipment to our JFK students and many useful resources. In order to receive the equipment, we are kindly asking for you to complete the participant waiver form attached below. Though this is completely optional, the form allows the community relations department to collect data from the participants. The data will NOT be used or shared in any way, unless of course you elect to receive further communication from them. The information is used to collect overall statistics of the program participants and to show the growth and impact of the program from year to year. They will need this data in order for them to receive funding and it is a measurable way to show how many people their program reaches and how many people are engaging with their brand. Please consider completing this form at your earliest convenience. Your child will still be participating in floorball, with or without the waiver form completed. If you have any questions please email Mrs. Zuk at zuk.k@deerparkschools.org. We thank you in advance for your continued support in our physical education programs.

December 1, 2023 - JFK~ Winter Weather Letter
Dear Parent and/or Guardian:
Winter is upon us and we will certainly have our share of cold days. All students should come to school each day prepared to go outside during the recess portion of their lunch period.
Throughout the winter months, we carefully monitor the weather and keep an eye on the temperature and wind chill. Students are sent outside for recess when the air temperature remains above 32 degrees. We also monitor the wind chill; if the wind chill causes the temperature to fall below 32 degrees the students remain indoors.
Please make sure your child dresses appropriately for outdoor weather. It is advisable for students to bring hats and gloves, and most importantly a jacket while outside.
Thank you for your assistance in keeping your child healthy. We love having them here at JFK each day rather than home sick. We hope you have a wonderful holiday season with your families.
Sincerely,
Kelly Benson

Halloween is just around the corner. In keeping with the occasion, we would like all of JFK’s children to enjoy the day while maintaining our focus on academics. To that end, please follow the guidelines outlined in this letter for class celebrations and costumes.
Grade 3 Costume Parade
This year our third-grade students will once again participate in a grade-level parade in our front parking lot at 11:00 am on Tuesday, October 31st. Parents and guests of all third-grade students are invited to attend the parade. The parade can be viewed from the perimeter of the walkway in front of the building. Students will rotate around the parking lot twice as they travel past their parents in a parade format and then proceed to an assigned area where parents can take photos. In case of rain, the parade will be held in the New Gym with a limit of two guests per student. In addition, third-grade students should remain in school for the entire school day and we ask that you do not sign your child out of school early.
Third Grade Students will be permitted to wear their costumes to school. If your child chooses to wear their costume to school, please make sure that they are able to be comfortable throughout the day. Also, be sure that they are able to use the bathroom independently with their costumes.
Grade 4 & 5 Students
Fourth and Fifth grade students do not participate in the parade. Students may come to school dressed in their costumes if they choose. We will be celebrating Halloween on Tuesday, October 31st. This is the day they should come dressed if they choose to do so. There are several rules the school must enforce. Also, be sure that they are able to use the bathroom independently with their costumes. They are as following:
No violent, scary or offensive costumes
No weapons (swords, bats, sticks, lightsabers, guns of any kind, etc.)
No masks
No full face makeup (students must be identifiable)
No “bleeding” and/or fake blood
No slippers; all footwear must be appropriate for school
No props (canes, bags, bottles, stuffed animals, etc.)
Make sure your child can use the bathroom independently wearing their costumes
Additionally, students should not bring candy to school to distribute to others. Classroom teachers will inform students of classroom plans for celebrations. Thank you for your help in making our school a safe place to learn!

May 10, 2023 - JFK ~ NYS Field Tests
Dear JFK Families,
John F. Kennedy was chosen to participate in NYS field testing. 4th and 5th graders will participate in the field test on Monday, May 15, 2023. Students who opted out of the other NYS tests are not automatically opted out of the field tests. If you would like to opt your child out, you must email your child’s teacher, specifically stating field tests.
Fourth Graders and Fifth Graders will take the NYS FIELD TEST on the computer this year. Please make sure that your child comes to school with a fully charged chromebook on May 15th. This will help for a smooth administration of the tests.
If you wish to opt out of the NYS Field Test, you must write a letter or email to your child’s teacher prior to the start of the test.
If you have any further questions, please contact the main office at (631) 274 4310.

March 2023 - JFK ~ NYS Tests
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Students are scheduled to take the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade NYS Assessment in ELA on Wednesday, April 19th and Thursday, April 20th. Students are also scheduled to take the 3rd-5th grade NYS Assessment in Math on Wednesday, May 3rd and Thursday, May 4th.
School will begin and end at normal times on testing days. The NYS Assessment is an un-timed test, however we anticipate most of our students will need about 2 hours to complete it. Students whose parents have chosen to opt them out of testing will be assigned to classrooms where they will be able to read quietly during testing. Just as with a normal school day, students who are late to school will be marked “tardy”, and students who are absent will be marked “absent”.
If you wish to opt your child out of the NYS Assessments, you must write a letter to your child’s teacher or email Ms. Gutierrez at gutierrez.m@deerparkschools.org by March 21st.
Please click the following link to read more information regarding state mandated testing.
If you have any further questions, please contact the Main office at (631) 274-4310.

September 19, 2022 - JFK - Early Morning Drop Off
Dear JFK Families,
With music programs beginning tomorrow morning. Please keep in mind the following safety procedures when dropping off your child for before school lessons.
PROCEDURES FOR EARLY MORNING AUTOMOBILE DROP-OFF AT THE WEST SIDE FRONT ENTRANCE
PLEASE BE PATIENT AND HELP US KEEP YOUR CHILDREN SAFE!
Do not drop your child off prior to 7:40 or 5 minutes before their scheduled club. We realize people need to get to work, but we do not have the staff to watch your child.
DO NOT STOP AT THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO DROP OFF YOUR CHILD.
Pull all the way up to the monitor who is waiting at the west side/front doors and wait in line. Please remember to maintain a 5 MPH speed while on school property.
Children MUST exit the car on the curbside and NOT THE PARKING LOT (driver's side) side of your car.
Do not cut the line and make two lines. The line needs to be maintained as neat and orderly. You will be directed to pull around and get on the end of the line.
Do not park on the street, park in the front parking spaces, hop the guardrail and walk in front of traffic. We have had many close calls and this holds up the line. ALSO, please do not make a U-Turn in the parking lot, continue to exit to Lake Avenue straight in front of you.
Everyone's time is as valuable as yours. YOU MUST BE PATIENT!
Thank you for assisting us in keeping all children safe during this time. Traffic is busy outside during drop off and patience is a must! We appreciate your order and cooperation!
Warm Regards,
Kelly Benson
September 13, 2022 - Meet the Teacher Night Grade 4
September 2022
Dear Parent or Guardian:
Welcome back to another year at JFK. The first few days of school have been busy, but enjoyable for the teachers and for your children. We will be having our Open House/Meet the Teacher as follows:
Thursday, September 15, 2022
Fourth Grade
Social-Emotional Learning Parent Meeting @ 6:00 p.m.
Meet the Teacher @ 6:30 p.m.
If your child’s teacher is unable to attend this session, they will contact you directly.
During the classroom sessions, teachers will discuss school and classroom procedures, curriculum and daily routines. Our shared goal is to help your child succeed by providing you with information that will set the foundation for yearlong positive parent-teacher relationships. It is our experience that the likelihood of each child achieving his or her potential is enhanced greatly when parents, teachers and administrators understand each other’s expectations and work together.
Owing to time constraints, we ask you not to discuss your child individually with his or her teacher on that evening but to wait for the conference days that have been scheduled. If you have any pressing concern, please, call your child’s teacher directly to request a meeting for another time.
The Special Area teachers attending this evening are as follows: Ms. Nussbaum-Art, Ms. Petraco-Digital Literacy/Math, Ms. McAdam-Math, Ms. Marotta-AIS, and Ms. Hagan-Speech.

September 9, 2022 - Sad News
Dear JFK Families,
The JFK community is devastated to learn of the tragic loss of our 4th grade student, Gavin Bueno. We extend our deepest condolences to Gavin’s family and friends and continue to keep all those impacted by this tragedy in our hearts and minds during this very difficult time.
Gavin Bueno was a bright light here at JFK. He was a kind and gentle person - a friend to all and always wearing a smile! We will always remember him that way. On behalf of the Bueno Family, I am sharing the service information with you. Services are as follows;
Mangano Family Funeral Home
1701 Deer Park Ave
Sunday, September 11th 2pm - 9pm Visitation
Monday, September 12th 10:15 St.Cyril’s
We understand that children deal with grief in different ways. Counselors, teachers, and support staff are available for the students, parents, and teachers to talk about their thoughts, feelings and concerns. As a parent you may want to talk to your child about death because it impacts each person in different ways. How children will react will depend on the relationship they had with the person who died, their age, and their prior experience with death.
We suggest that you listen to your child. If they want to talk, answer their questions simply, honestly, and be prepared to answer the same questions repeatedly. Sometimes there are no answers and all you can do is listen. It’s important that students have an opportunity to communicate about these concerns and receive help if they need it. If you have any questions, please call our school Psychologist, Dr. DeRoss or our Social Worker, Ms. Miller-Douglas at 631-274-4310. We can arrange sessions as needed.
It is my hope to never have to write a letter such as this again. I thank the John F. Kennedy community for their outpouring of support for all of those who knew Gavin and his family, and for those who did not but desired to help in some way.
Sincerely,
Kelly Benson
Principal of JFK
