What Happens in 4th Grade at Dedham School?
Fourth grade is a year of growth, independence, and exciting learning! Students begin to dive deeper into subjects, take more responsibility for their work, and build important skills that prepare them for upper elementary and beyond. Fourth grade is a year of growing social awareness, of intellectual stretching, wondering, and clamoring.
Reading & Writing: Students explore longer and more complex texts. They learn to analyze characters, identify themes, and summarize stories. In writing, they focus on organizing ideas clearly and using evidence to support their thinking across opinion, narrative, and informational writing.
Math: Students build on foundational skills by working with multi-digit multiplication, division, fractions, and geometry, word problems and critical thinking.
Science: Students will use Mystery Science, covering topics such as the Human Body;Vision and the Brain; Earth's Features and Processes; Soundwaves, and Communication; and Patterns and Energy.
Social Studies: The focus will be on Maine Studies. Through the history of Maine students will explore Civics and Government, Geography, and History.
Atlantic Salmon Study: In February, students will become stewards of 100 or so Atlantic Salmon eggs. Students will be immersed in the study of Atlantic Salmon and how this native species has impacted Maine's History, both past and present, while learning about their life cycle and habitat. When the Salmon are ready, students will take a trip to release them into a portion of the Penobscot River Watershed.
Spending Time Outdoors: Fourth graders need time to fine-tune their social skills. Students need time to develop their individual resilience and intellectual curiosity while their moral character and independent thought mature. What better place to do this than outside! Fourth grade has 3 raised beds. Right now, they are filled with pumpkins, carrots, and a few beets. This fall, we will plant garlic. We will spend time harvesting and planting this fall in preparation for the spring. We will also have a "Move and Groove" time 3-4 days per week. This is a 20-minute movement break; this happens outside as often as possible. We will also explore the geology and ecology of Maine using our tremendous trail system.
Dedham Fourth Grade is the place to be!
