One big event in the turning of the gay rights movement was the Stonewall Riots. On June 28, 1969, in New York City, there was an underground bar run by the mafia for the LGBTQ+ community called the Stonewall Inn. It was illegal to serve gay people alcohol, and people identifying as queer came to get away from the oppression and police brutality. In June, a raid happened where eight police officers came unannounced and arrested those cross-dressing as it was illegal. Some people at the bar began to resist getting gender checked and began to fight back by throwing items, like bottles and trash cans, at the officers, so they would leave. For six days the riots continued and they kept driving the police away and even though in the end the Stonewall Inn was destroyed, there was a more open debate on homosexuality and the freedom of the LGBTQ+ community. One year after the riots took place, people gathered to celebrate and this was known as the first pride parade (“The 1996”).
