Black Literacy Matters!

Clarice Jackson:

"Black Literacy Matters and It Matters NOW!"

Sherri Lucas-Hall:

"We need to change the way we prepare teachers and educators to teach reading."

Kareem Weaver:

Structured Literacy: "The stuff that we know works for the greatest number of kids."

Clarice Jackson:

"We need to provide structured literacy practices that are based in science to teach children to read. The three cueing system, guessing, and making children guess or look at pictures is not the scientific approach to reading. We need to stop those types of curriculums from being put into our classrooms that are not effective, and that are continuing to feed the school to prison pipeline."

Resha Conroy:

"What happens when the child is black?"

Kareem Weaver:

"This is a civil rights issue of our time."

"I wasn't getting the actual help I needed."

"The teacher didn't know how to teach me reading."

Lacey Robinson: The Legacy of Anti-Literacy Laws

"And so I ask you: Why do you withhold the code from some children?"

Kareem Weaver and Luciano:

Our children should not "have to go to prison to learn stuff like that."

Literacy Is A Civil Right.

We Need Change Now.
