What Makes a Great Melody?
'A great melody line has steps and skips in them. A step makes the melody sound clear and all together whereas a skip allows you to go whatever range you want.'
submitted by Ayanna Richards, AMU 101
'These steps are used to create a sense of fast paced, connected melodies, it makes everything sound smooth since they’re just on a higher or lower pitch by one note. '
submitted by Mahir Alim, AMU 101
'
In songwriting it's very common to see the verse relying on steps and the chorus relying on skips. A chords function is mostly defined by the behaviours of the notes in that chord.'
submitted by Matthew Losee, AMU 101
'Having the musical gift and talent of Mozart's is something on it’s own, but having that talent and continental fame at the age of 10 is one of the most impressive things in the world.'
submitted by Jacob Appleton, AMU 101
'When it comes to Mozart's there is music for everyone to enjoy no matter their style of music they prefer listening to.'
submitted by Kayonna Blake, AMU 101
'His simple compositions are many more times effective than super complex melodies and they create catchy tunes which are relevant to this day.'
submitted by Arthigan Jeyamohan, AMU 101

'What Makes Music Scary?' October 30th
'The last main thing you can do is have unresolved build-ups. If you want people to feel uneasy. Adding an eerie bar of notes with no ending really makes it hard to relax. Volume, tone and percussion can also help with this.'
submitted by Martel Whittick
'Dissonant chords can create tension and put the listener on edge waiting for a resolution that’s not coming. Even if this was played in a normal range on a normal instrument, it would still sound unpleasant.'
submitted by Brad Chen
'Elements that build suspense, such as a long tempo and dynamic increase(such as the JAWS theme) that make the listener wonder when it will end. Things like sudden movement with the notes also give tension, as well as dissonant, eerie, irregular chords.'
submitted by Aaron DeLeon
'... a violin would never really reach the extremely high notes, or very low notes, since it was never designed to play in that musical range. This is why, when playing these notes, the instrument makes a shrivelled or unpleasant sound, also giving the music a ‘scary’ effect. '
submitted by Alyssa Manuelpillai
'If It Ain't Baroque, Should You Fix It?' October 19th
'The Baroque era was a time where artists were rejecting the restraints of the Renaissance conventions, challenging the views of balance to depict motion, grandeur and theatrics. Deconstructivism and Neo-futurism especially share the trait of being dramatic with the Baroque area. '
submitted by Sara Olano Medina, AMU 101
"What I find more complicated is that the architecture shows emotion. Like, for example, if you take a look at inside St. Peter’s Basilica (below). There is detail in every single square inch of the building. "
submitted by Arhum Nouman
"The defining feature of all Baroque art, whether that be music, visual arts, or even clothing, is extravagance. It was a time where everything had to be lavish, dramatic, and detailed. "
submitted by Neha Nair, AMU 101
What Makes a Great Melody? October 5th
'When subverting is used right, it really helps develop the song, and hold on to the listener. '
submitted by Maya Williams Carnio AMU 101
' I like this melody line because every time I listen to this melody, I feel that all my worries have been flushed out of my brain and I’m free to do anything and go anywhere.'
submitted by Arhum Nouman, AMU 101
Attention, PHS Music! Don't forget that this coming Friday, November 13th is a PA Day, which means that our Kahoot will be on Thursday,November 10th, this week!

Love Songs in the Middle Ages September 28th
'I don’t think the lyrics were as vulgar as they can be today in romantic songs but some similarities are that when writing the piece you are writing how you feel not just random lyrics.'
submitted by Marcus Messius, AMU 101
'But today’s romantic music is about how you love the person. I also think that today's music is way more complex than the 14th century. '
submitted by Ben Reboks, AMU 101
Mozart's Genius and Student Picks September 21st
"Mozart's music is described as if we see our own humanity reflected back at us."
submitted by Brad Chen, AMU 101
"His [John William's] music varied from beautiful and calm like Hedwig’s Theme, and fury and intensity like the Jaws theme or Imperial March. Almost every iconic stand-out movie had John Williams behind it."
submitted by Aaron deLeon, AMU 101
Social Media and the Music Industry Sept. 12th
'...social media gives people the ability to speak whatever is on their minds through the safety of a fake identity. This allows people to talk rudely about songs and discriminate against writers, and find other people who do the same thing. '
Alyssa Manuelpillai, AMU 101

AM101 continues in-class work with both Guitar and Percussion Ensemble. Students have also taken home band instruments and method books to continues with online instruction. PHS Music is committed to maintaining an excellent breadth of exposure to guitar, Percussion Ensemble, and Instrument work, during the current situation.
Attention all PHS Music students from this year and last year! Do you want to take home an instrument to practice? Please respond to Mr. Kosurko in your Google Classroom for more information. Let's keep those chops up as we get ready for that time when ensembles will be starting up again!
AMU 101 Quad 1 students have oriented themselves to the class and online. We'll be looking forward to continuing our studies with guitar, and get into our first Percussion Ensemble work, next week! Students have been online for our first virtual classrooms, and have shown a great ability to communicate together as a class, both in the Google Class streaming site, or during our Google Meets. It's great to observe how students can show their ability to communicate in different ways.
'When making music you also have to make sure how your phrases sound. Phrases can be categorized as either questions or answers. Questions having a more incomplete ending and answers feeling complete. '
submitted by Ashi Asharya, AMU 101
"As for an Interesting melody of my choice, The usage of intervals and spacing in "Orochimaru's theme" creates an interesting sound. Quicker steps and slower leaps diversify the melody and make it interesting. It also utilizes phrasing exceptionally well in resolving the piece."
submitted by Marwan Al-Joundi, AMU 201, SCB
"Verses typically use steps and choruses use skips to provide more energy and excitement. The use of silence in a melody is just as important as having a note. Silence can leave suspense and send a message for the listener while also giving the musicians time to breathe."
submitted by Alanna Tran, AMU 201, SBC, IJ
"Different chords within a key play different roles within a song depending on how they’re used. For example, cadences! Going from a dominant chord into a tonic chord creates a perfect cadence and if used at the end of the song, it works as a finale. However, this concept also can be applied to individual notes within a key as well, and if it’s used correctly, then the song will sound far more appealing to listen to." submitted by Stanny Huang, AMU 201, SCB, IJ "I love the melody for "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd. It combines skips and steps to make an upbeat and catchy tune that is hard to forget. It also makes use of antecedents and consequents to make the music flow nicely."
submitted by Gabby Cisneros, AMU 201, SCB
"Unlike a horror movie, [The Dark Knight: Batman], the mysterious and ominous tune is somewhat relieving, and has a build up to a massive beat drop near the end which closes off the movie. I feel like all of these traits combined with the message of the movie make up for an awesome song that left viewers excited and satisfied at the end of the movie. "
submitted by Alan Dakeshov, AMU 201, SCB, IJ
"Batman, in this scene, is in prison because he had failed to defeat Bane, who subsequently had placed him there, so him escaping prison is him learning this lesson that the music helps to convey. The music at the beginning starts soft and as it progresses, the dynamics and tempo begin to increase, while incorporating other elements from drums and chanting from the other movie characters themselves to create a suspenseful atmosphere."submitted by Joel Vicente, AMU 201, SCB, IJ"The powerful march [Star Wars] brings suspense and makes the viewers feel intimidated by the Empire. The repetition, percussiveness, dynamics and emphasis throughout makes the Imperial March very memorable to viewers."
submitted by Sofia Syed, AMU 201, SCB
"The music should enhance the mood of the scene; if something suspenseful is happening, then the soundtrack should inflict anxiety in the listener. A good example of the use of music to evoke this kind of feeling in the listener is in “Jaws”. "
submitted by Alexandra Neglescu, AMU 201, SCB
"Also, the composer uses music to display a character's [The Hobbit] personality when the character is on screen which is both creative and fascinating when analyzing the movie for these qualities. "
submitted by Sean Dolan, AMU 201, SCB, IJ
" I find this soundtrack [Moana] awesome because it delivers many different emotions and enhances what is being shown on screen, following Moana's pitfall, then her slow climb back to a person put back together, ready to take on the world, and all in between. It also connects with the audience to ensure that the motivational messages are strongly and well received."
submitted by Gabby Cisneros AMU 201, SCB,
"I still love the song “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” [The Lion King]. The first thing I noticed about the song is that the music score has a very upbeat, happy and catchy rhythm, but when I looked more into the song I noticed that the rhythm perfectly portrays Simba’s feelings."
Natalin Aloysius, AMU 101, JCB, Biological Phenomena/the Black Death/Cool Electron Micrographs, or Ethical Questions about Disease
If it [the Black Death] were to happen today, I think it wouldn't be as deadly because of the resources and knowledge we know now.
Bianca Abraham SNC 2D1
The latest World Health Organization report puts the death toll at just over 3,000 globally, whereas the Black Death was responsible for the deaths of an estimated 30-50% of Europe's population in the mid-14th century. The most disturbing similarity between the two lies not in the diseases themselves but in their social consequences. Shariq Batavia SNC 2D`1
Great Music Videos Because...
'I think that the music video for Ariana Grande’s “No Tears Left to Cry” is really unique and represents the music well. In the opening scenes, the camera speeds through a strange cityscape that has buildings on the top, bottom, and sides of the world', submitted by Andrea Neglescu AMU 201, SCB
Updated Tuesday, June 23rd, 2020
Our new End of Year Project section has some wonderful examples of work handed in from our students in all 3 classes, this semester. More entries will be added, and left for the summer.
All Google Classrooms will shut down on Friday, June 26th.
We mourn the passing of Dame Vera Lynn on Thursday, June 18th. 'The Forces Sweetheart', Vera Lynn sang for the troops during WW2 in India, Burma, and Egypt among other places, as part of Entertainments National Service Association. 'The White Cliffs of Dover' is among her most popular recordings. She was 103 years old!
We have ended into the last regular week of school and distance learning for this semester! Below are important reminders for all Students and Parents:
ALL INSTRUMENTS AND METHOD BOOKS/MUSIC MUST BE RETURNED TO PHS BEFORE THE END OF THIS WEEK. Students may NOT keep instruments belonging to PHS over the summer and MUST return them for complete cleaning and maintenance procedures!
ALL SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS MUST BE RETURNED BEFORE THE END OF THIS WEEK. SNC 2D1 students must make sure they double check their textbook numbers and 'submit' their numbers to the 'textbook' assignment in our Google Classroom
Any missing assignments from students will be collected up to Monday, June 22nd by 12pm. After this point, any missing assignments will receive a mark of 0%.
This week will see our end of semester projects from our students, including our Instrument Research Project from our Grade 9 Music, and towards the end of the week, our online Video Composition projects from our grade 10 Music Students. Our Science students are busily finishing their Climate Change mini-projects to end off their heavy semester. Well done SNC 2D1!! Don't forget your final Cells, Tissues, Organs and Systems assignments, and your Virtual Frog Dissection lab.
We are happy to feature and showcase the online work of our students as the week progresses.
Favourite Optical Illusions
'I did some research and found out that the feather that Darcy Oake showed the audience before lightning it up is actually a piece of special paper known as flash paper..''Burning Pigeon Trick',
submitted by Aryan Pagadala, SNC 2D1'Having people sacrifice for our community consensually is not only a good way to develop scientifically, but we are able to stay morally transparent within society.' Eleni Mallinos SNC 2D1
'Lennon sings of “Nothing to kill or die for… Living life in peace”, and Dylan advocates for change in society in his lyrics when he sings, “He’s taught in his school… to protect his white skin” to “keep up his hate [towards African Americans]... but it ain’t him to blame, he’s only a pawn in their game”. This kind of reflection of society's problems is unheard of in popular music today. The 60’s music reflected on widespread issues in culture and society.' Marwan AlJoundi, AMU 201
' I don't think there would be a lot of people out there from newer generations who would enjoy music that's 1960s-style and call it their "go-to genre". In my opinion, I think genres like pop, hip-hop, and r&b are the main representatives of what the music industry today is like. '
Moon Le, AMU 101The Originality of Popular Music AMU 101 and AMU 201
"When there is no room to be different, you become the same, which causes the insult to music today that is pop." Andrew McGuire, AMU 101 "As the video by OriginalPressings brings up, it’s because music is becoming much more corporate, so copying what’s already selling well is the safest way of making money, and considering how oversaturated the music industry is becoming, I can’t really blame them." Stanny Huang, AMU 201, IJ, SCB
Eye-Strain Relief techniques
' If you're going to stare at a screen for a solid 10 minutes and accomplish nothing, I suggest you spend that time reading a book, taking a walk or doing physical chores. I'm guilty of this as there are many points in the day where I think I could be doing something better with my time.' Sean Dolan, AMU 201, IJ, SCB
Anna Hykway, SNC 2D1'I never thought that the position of the screen or the amount of natural vs. artificial light in the room could have such an impact on my eyes.' Emma Leighton, SNC 2D1Writing a great melody is the next step to our Grade 9 and 10 Music Students' composition projects...see what they have to say from last week's Response topics as they apply melody to their Musical Forms.
Congratulations goes out to Sean Dolan, this week's winner for grade 10 AMU. It must have been Sean's Greatness as a pelican which held intellectual superiority over different animals in the Kingdon, including wolves. He almost lost it with a sneaky move regarding plagal cadences in the key of E flat major, but he fought on! We welcome back Misthi Pandya as she returns to be this week's winner for Grade 9 Instrumental Music. She is one dynamic Elk; dodging fuzzy goats, and wallaby's and evading Dazzling foxes in her quest. Grade 10 Science had no Kahoot this week, as they finish up a few assignments and had a lengthy Google Meet for their Virtual Microscopy and Biological Drawing lab. See you next week, everyone!
Attention Cordelia M. and Jesse M.! Your instruments are labelled and are available for pickup in the main office! Do not go to the Music room...they are in the office!
Music students continue to study Form in preparation for their composition projects. Analysis assignments will use the elements of music to analyze, categorize, and use Music Literacy concepts to think about pieces and songs thoroughly. AMU 201 students will have a Google Meet at 12:OOpm on Thursday, June 4th of this week, while AMU 101 students will have their Google Meet for 12:30pm, this Thursday, June 4th. Attendance will be taken.
Apologies for a power outage that swept through parts of North Oshawa, rendering postings delayed until the evening for a few courses and marks.
All music students are required to return any PHS owned instruments to PHS, over the next few weeks, as you make your appointments to enter PHS for textbook return and locker clean-out. Please read your Google Classroom posts for further details.

But wait...oh no! In Science, Aryan Pagadala took the crown away from Ethan as this week's Kahoot champion!
In Grade 10 Instumental, Jenine Alkhatib, was one Smart Owl...hooting her way to victory against the evil but wise Unicorn, and the honest, but unworthy Jaguar, not to mention a few others.
Grade 9 Instrumental saw complete chaos for a time, but at the end, once again, 'Epic Eagle' Victoria battled against Goats, Seals, Iguanas, and other evil villains to come out on top, once again! Well done Victoria Petroff! Eat your heart out, Animal Crossing!

-J.S. Bach worked for the Lutheran Church, and among his greatest works were compositions that celebrated the Christian event of the Life and Death of Christ... in particular his work in the Passions...expressing the life of Jesus Christ through important religious figures...Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John...but listen to the music as an wonderful offering of functional Baroque Music, and please don't feel that you need to attach a religious value to this work, past it's historical context
