Game Play Rules
All OVA rules are in effect with some exceptions listed below:
First contact on serve can be a volley
All matches in pool play and seeding rounds will be two straight rally point games to 25 points (win by 2)
Libero is permitted. They should be identifiable for the referees with a different colour jersey. (Please note: Liberos are not allowed to serve. They are also not able to set with a volley or make contact on an attack above the net from anywhere on the court.)
5 Serve limit per player.
A maximum of 12 substitutions are allowed per set.
Two time-outs are allowed per team per set and each time-out is 60 seconds long.
A ball may be played off the lower body but may not be intentionally kicked
A double hit will NOT be called on any first ball over the net.
Roof Rule: A ball hitting the ceiling or an overhead obstruction (lights, fan, or basketball hoop lying horizontally) above a playable area shall remain in play provided the ball contacts the ceiling or obstruction on the side of the net that is occupied by the team that last played the ball.
All Net violations will be called as per the OVA rule change-referee’s discretion
Fair play will not be in effect. Coaches can manage their rosters as they see fit.
Tournament Format
This is a two-tier tournament. All teams will be placed in 2 sets of pool play (Friday evening, and Saturday morning). From there, teams will be sorted into 2 tiers for playoffs.
PLAYOFF ROUNDS (2 out 3) - Saturday Afternoon Matches
TIE BREAKING PROCEDURES for ROUND ROBIN and SEEDING ROUND PLAY:
2 Way Tie - The tied teams will play one set to 15 points with NO CAP. Must win by 2 pts.
3 Way Tie - Once you enter the 3 Way Tie Breaking Format, continue through the sequence to determine the placing of the 3 teams involved. Head to head results are no longer applicable.
1. The team having the best RATIO of SETS WON/LOST among the TIED teams will be ranked higher
2. The team having the best RATIO of SETS WON/LOST among ALL matches in the round will be ranked higher
3. The team having the best RATIO of POINT FOR/AGAINST among the TIED teams will be ranked higher
4. The team having the best RATIO of POINTS FOR/AGAINST among ALL matches played will be ranked higher
5. A coin toss – it never comes to this. All Point and Set RATIOS are calculated using DIVISION
General Rules
PLAYER ELIGIBILITY: All players must be properly registered in grade eight or under and be in regular attendance at their respective school.
NET HEIGHT: The boys’ net height will be 2.13 metres and the girls’ net height will be 2.09 metres
UNIFORMS: All players must wear matching team shirts, individually numbered, while playing or sitting on the bench as a substitute. The Libero Should be identified with a different coloured jersey.
PRACTICE BALLS: Practice balls will not be provided. Please bring your own. NOTE: Balls must be used only in the gym; any balls being used in the hallways will be confiscated.
COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR PLAYERS AT ALL TIMES: Participants or spectators found to be abusive to the tournament facilities, officials, or accommodations will be banned from the remainder of the competition.
STARTING LINE-UP AND ROTATION ORDER: Modified score sheets will be used during the tournament. However, starting line-ups, will be recorded as well as substitutions. Position sheets are to be completed and given to the scorer before each game. Sheets will be provided.
TIME CONSTRAINTS: Warmup times will be reduced in time or eliminated in order to stay on schedule. Convenors may also reduce time of game as well (e.g., Start a set at 5-5), so please make sure your teams are on time to their matches and volleyballs are put away when prompted.
LINE KEEPERS: Teams may be asked to provide one lines-person and scorekeeper per game at the referee’s or convenor's discretion.
TOURNAMENT PACKAGES AND FIRST AID: Tournament Packages are all electronic and QR codes will be provided on site for parents. The score table will also have bandages and ice packs. Please bring a team First Aid kit for your own team too.
