Administrator Message:
It’s hard to believe that February has already almost passed. 100s day has come and gone which puts us over the half way mark for the school year. 100s day was cause for much celebration by our primary division who participated in a variety of activities revolving around the number 100.
The groundhogs are calling for an early spring although looking out the window you would never guess. Students have received their report cards and are busy setting goals and assessing their own progress as we head into second term. Please take time to carefully review your child’s report card with them. Discuss their strengths, and areas for improvement and help them set goals and plan for the remainder of the year. We know that when parents are engaged in the learning process student achievement improves.
The Grade 8s have selected courses for next year and the intermediate division is pumped up for Rivalry Week. Grade 3 and 6 classes are actively prepping for EQAO with weekly focus groups.
We wish you all a safe and restful March Break starting on March 8th. Classes will resume on March 18th.

The Lunar New Year begins between the 21st of January and 21st of February. The beginning of the new year is calculated based on the new moon located nearest the start of spring in the northern hemisphere. Most of the time, the new year begins 11 days before the date on which the previous year began. If this does not fall between January 21 and February 21, a leap month is added and the Lunar New year occurs 18 or 19 days later.
Each year of the Chinese lunar calendar is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chines zodiac, all of which have different characteristics. The New Year says farewell to one animal and welcomes the next.
Valentine's Day honours two different saints named Valentine. However, customs for the holiday have nothing to do with the lives of these saints. The customs come from the ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia, which took place on February 15. The festival honored Pan, the Roman god of nature, and Juno, the goddess of women and marriage. During this festival young people drew names from a box and exchanged gifts. Gradually the custom of giving gifts was replaced by sending cards. Today Valentine's Day, celebrated on February 14, is a time to display love and affection. People send cards, candy, or flowers as valentines to their sweethearts, friends, and family.
At its sixty-second session, in November 2007, the General Assembly of the United Nations proclaimed February 20 as World Day of Social Justice. The day was observed for the first time in 2009. The observance of the day should contribute to greater awareness and action for social change regarding social justice issues associated with the dimensions of diversity – including, but not limited to; ability (physical and intellectual), age, culture, gender, gender identity, heritage, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, socio-economic status. World Day of Social Justice also recognizes the further consolidation of the efforts of the international community in poverty eradication, promotion of full employment and decent work, gender equity and access to social well-being and justice for all.
On February 27, students and staff are encouraged to wear a pink article of clothing to send the powerful message that discrimination related to homophobia, transphobia, and sexism will be challenged. This Anti-Bullying Day grew from a student protest against an incident of homophobic, sexist bullying in a Nova Scotia high school. This positive social action was initiated by David Shepherd and Travis Price, who bought and distributed over 50 pink shirts to raise awareness in response to the incident, where a male student was called a homosexual for wearing a pink shirt on the first day of school.

Some say basketball is an easy sport, but if it were, everyone would be playing it. Michael Jordan once said, “Basketball is a beautiful game when the five players court play with one heartbeat”. After weeks and weeks of strenuous practice and preparation, an all-star season for the Intermediate Girls Basketball came to an end, shortly after their area playdowns at Whitby Shores PS. The team was selected in early January, and consisted of 10 players. Practices were held every Tuesday and Thursday morning. They played outstandingly- Shooting with great accuracy, executing stunning plays, and dribbling with prominence.
A great thank-you to Mr. Marshall for coaching the 2019 intermediate girls basketball team..

The intermediate boys basketball season, consisting of 11 ambitious boys, has recently come to an end. The coaches, Mrs. Calder and Mrs. Rose took time out of their lunches and routines after school, in order to prepare the boys for each of their games and tournaments. They also played a major role in training the team to compete with outstanding teamwork and
great determination. They played one tournament, Petty John, and were successful in winning all five games for their division. Following the tournament, the team represented Bellwood proudly in the Area Playdowns where they played three hard-fought games as a closing to their season. Unfortunately, they were defeated, yet continued to demonstrate great sportsmanship, and should be proud of their performance this season.
