The mission of the Ron Russell Middle School Counseling Department is to inspire all students to reach their academic, career, and personal potential and, in doing so, become successful college and career ready, global citizens. All students will have equal access to the RRMS Middle School Counseling Program, which provides developmentally appropriate activities that include individual and small group counseling and classroom lessons. In addition, students will be treated equitably, with fairness, justice, and respect by all staff.
The RRMS School Counseling Program does not discriminate on the basis of a person’s color, sex, race, religion, national origin, ancestry, creed, pregnancy, marital status, sexual orientation, or physical, mental, emotional or learning disability, or any other characteristic protected by state or federal law.

School Counselor: Jake Burgess (A-L)
My philosophy:
I believe every student carries the ability to reach a state of inherent tranquility and self actualization. I bring forward the freedom to choose meaning in our lives on our own terms by celebrating and empathizing with student identities, cultural backgrounds, wisdom, fortitude, resilience, and perseverance. I collaborate with school administrators, teachers, parents, and the community as a whole to promote an equitable, anti-racist, culturally competent and trauma informed environment that best serves the student, their family, and their future. I am here for the student, their caretaker(s), their families, and community as school is only one part of a complex dimensional behavioral framework for youth.
Who I am:
I'm Jake! I'm a US Army veteran, father to my wonderful 6 year old daughter (Camila), decent distance runner, amateur at drawing/art, woodworking, and love basically anything outside. I received my Bachelors of Science in social science, with a minor in psychology at Portland State University. In June of 2023 I received my Masters of Education in counseling, with a school counseling focus at PSU as well. I'm currently in pursuit of my NCC (National Certified Counselor) and LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor), to augment my skills as a school counselor.
