What we are learning in November

Spelling Tests are most Fridays. Your classroom teacher will communicate when those are. 

Math: We will be starting Topic 8!  Topic 7 focuses on counting to 120, starting at any number less than 120. Your child will count forward by 1s, read and write numbers to 120, count by 1s and 10s, and represent a number of objects with a written numeral for quantities to 120. Using a hundred chart to count will help your child build understanding about 2-digit numbers that will be important in later learning about place value

*As a goal for 1st grade be the end of the year they need to count to 120 by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s.

Reading:  In Really Great Reading (BLAST), which breaks reading down in to how and why sounds make the sounds that they do. We will be learning more about 2 SOUNDS BLENDS. A blend is two letters that blend together. Students learn to really listen for both sounds. Some examples of these are words like "blend, snap, bend". Blends can be at the beginning or end of words. They are different from digraphs because while digraphs are two letters making one sound a blend it two letters making their own sound, they are just blended together. We will also get into learning about breaking words into syllables using WHALE TALK. They put their hand under their chin, close thier mouths and say the word. They can feel and hear how a word is broken into syllables. This makes reading and writing words easier.

Unit Studies: We are going to be taking a trip around the world to learn about all the ways people celebrate Christmas and Holidays!
