Welcome to 5th Grade!
My sweet furry baby Moji:)
I was born and raised in Georgia which is where most of my family still lives. I currently reside right here in Douglasville. I am married to my best friend of almost 17 years and we have 4 super smart cool kindhearted kiddos! Their names are Marsalis, Mekhi, Micah, McKenzie, and Moji (furry baby). I absolutely love and adore my family, they are my first, last, and everything! So, I spend the majority of my free time with them of cooking creative meals, reading, being a gym girlie, reading, and lots of traveling. When I am not with my first family...I will be with my cheer family! I am one of the Cheer Coaches for Chapel Hill High School Panthers!
I obtained my Bachelors degree from Columbia Southern University, Masters degree from Grand Canyon University, and I just recently graduated from Kennesaw State with my Specialist in Curriculum and Instruction.

This year, we will continue to use ThinkCerca as our Writing Curriculum. In Writing, students will write Narrative, Informational, and Opinion pieces. I expect for students to come into 5th grade being able to write a 4-5 paragraph essay, as this is what they did in 4th grade. I expect students to use proper grammar when creating sentences and or paragraphs. Their writing rotation will also include grammar instruction which covers everything from progressive verbs, parts of Speech, to correlative conjunctions, relative pronouns, and so much more! We will also have weekly grammar quizzes in 5th grade! In Social Studies, students are in the final year of a three year study of United States history in which all four strands (history, geography, civics/government, and economics) are integrated. Students begin the year learning about the growth of 19th century industry and innovation in the United States, and culminate the study with the events and impact of September 11, 2001. The geography strand emphasizes the influence of geography on U.S. history during these same time periods. In the civics/government strand, students learn about the rights of citizens contained within the Constitution, and how changes have been made over time to the Constitution to protect the rights of citizens. In the economic strand, students explore the ways consumers and producers have interacted in the American economy.

Homework:
In 5th grade, students will have ELA homework nightly. Homework will be assigned on Mondays, and will be due each Friday.
Agendas:
Students will use agendas to stay organized and on top of their assignments. It is very important that you look at the agenda daily and sign it so that you are aware of what is happening in the classroom.
Grading Guidelines:
All grades taken on independent practice, assessments, homework, quizzes, and/or projects will be recorded in the Student Information System’s electronic grade book Infinite Campus. Students will receive weekly grades for essays, independent assignments, homework, and grammar quizzes.
1st - 5th Grades:
A = 90-105
B = 80-89
C = 71-79
D = 70
F = Below 70
Art, Music, and Physical Education:
S = Satisfactory
N = Needs Improvement
U = Unsatisfactory
Absences:
All students will receive credit for satisfactory makeup work after an excused absence. A student will be given as many days as he/she was absent to make up tests and assignments after an excused absence. I understand that we get sick, and often just need mental health days. However, frequent absences will be a loss of instructional time, which we unfortunately will not be able to reteach.
Teachers are not required to provide assignments prior to an absence. Students are responsible for turning in late work when absent. There will be a bin for students to grab their work while they were out. It is the responsibility of the student to grab this work. Being responsible and accountable for their own learning is key at this grade level! Please reiterate this to your child.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any issues/concerns with grades or assignments.

Classroom Rules, Expectations, and Behavior:
At this grade level, students should be very familiar with the rules and expectations. However, there are times when students forget and must be reminded of expectations not only in the classroom, but outside of the classroom as well.
I expect for all students to come to class ready to learn.
I expect for all students to participate and put forth effort each day.
I expect for all students to be respectful not only to me, but to others and themselves as well.
I expect for all students to keep their hands and feet to themselves.
I expect for all students to keep negative comments about others to themselves. I will not tolerate any form of bullying whether it is physical or verbal. (imagine if someone called you a name or intentionally put their hands on you).
I expect for all students to raise their hand to comment or ask a question. (don't blurt out).
I expect for all students to ask for help when they don't understand something. I am here to help! (a closed mouth don't get fed!) How will I know, if you don't say anything!
Lastly, I expect for all students to have FUN, because we will have lots of FUN!
**Your student will be given 1 warning/redirection before a consequence is handed to them.
Student Consequences:
Warning/Redirection
Laps @ Recess (5-15 minutes)
Silent Lunch + Remind message to parent
Office Referral
*The severity of the consequence is up to the teacher.
Individual Incentives:
Each month the 5th grade teachers will select a Student of the Month! This student will receive a SOTM certificate, Principal's 200 ticket, and recognition in Dr. Abell's monthly Parent Newsletter.
Classroom Incentives:
Students will also have the ability to earn class compliments! These are not as easy to receive because it involves the entire class. So, if one person is making a bad choice...it will effect the entire class. Once the class as a whole receives 10 compliments, then I will spin the wheel for what their class incentive will be. It could be pajama day, lunch in the classroom and a movie, lunch outside, fun Friday, pizza party, ice-cream party, or juice & donuts. Below is how the class can earn compliments.
Positive café behavior
Compliments from another teacher or admin
Positive hallway behavior on level 0
On task even when I am speaking to another adult
Transitioning on level 0 (without reminders)
