Skills to Know
Reading:
Ask and answer questions about key details in a story or an article
Read or listen to a book. Make your own set of at least five questions about the book using the words "who, what, when, where, why, and how." See if someone in your family will take your test, and then you can grade it.
Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate an understanding of their central message or lesson.
Listen and read along to one of the stories linked below. Then, retell the story to a friend or family member. Make sure you include the beginning, middle, and end. Last, explain the lesson you learned from the story.
Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story
Read or listen to a fictional story. Fold a sheet of paper into three sections. In the first section, draw & describe the characters. In the second section, draw and describe the setting. In the third section, draw and describe the major events in the story.
Know the sounds for common consonant digraphs (ch, sh, th, ph, wh), long and short vowels (a,e,i,o,u), and consonant blends (bl, sl, pl, br, cr, dr, tr, etc.)
Use the charts and songs linked below to pronounce the correct sound for each digraph, vowel, and consonant blend.
Know and use various text features to locate key facts or information
Use a nonfiction book and go on a "Text Feature Scavenger Hunt." Use the book to locate the title, headings, table of contents, glossary, diagram, and captions. Explain to a friend or family member how to identify each text feature and its purpose.
Writing:
Write an opinion and give a reason for the opinion
Write about your favorite candy and give reasons why it is your favorite.
Do you like cats or dogs better? Write a paragraph stating your choice and the reasons why.
Write about your favorite movie and give reasons why it is your favorite.
Do you like cheese pizza or pepperoni pizza better? Write a paragraph stating your choice and the reasons why.
Write facts about a topic.
Read or listen to a nonfiction book. Using complete sentences, write down at least three facts you learned from this book and at least one question you still have about this topic.
Write a story with a clear beginning, middle, and end
Write about an adventure you have taken or wish to take this summer. Be sure to include a clear beginning, middle, and end with illustrations to match.
Read a book about school. Make a 5-10 page book about what you want to learn in 2nd grade. Don’t forget to include a front cover, title page, illustrations, and complete sentences.
Identify and use nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, contractions, compound words, and prepositions.

Use ending punctuation (.!?) correctly
Fold a sheet of paper into three sections. In the first section, write a few sentences that end with a period (statements or ideas). In the second section, write a few sentences that end with a question mark (asking sentences). In the third section, write a few sentences with lots of feeling that end with an exclamation mark.
