Skills to Know
Reading:
Recognize all letters of the alphabet and the sounds they represent
Use this ABC Chart (linked here) to name each letter of the alphabet and its sound. Can you also name a word that begins with each letter?
Connect to this Alphardy" song and video and review all letters and their sounds.
Isolate beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words
Make predictions about a story based on the title and pictures
Before reading a book, make a prediction based on the title and picture on the front cover.
Read from left-to-right and top-to-bottom
Read a book and model how to read from left to right, top to bottom, and turn pages correctly.
Retell a simple story (beginning, middle, and end)
After reading a story, retell the story using the words "beginning, middle, end."
Recognize basic story components (characters, setting, plot)
After reading or listening to a fiction book, name the characters, settings, and major events in the story.
Recognize rhymes and rhyming patterns.
Read or listen to a book by Dr. Seuss. Identify and write at least three sets of rhyming words you found in the story.

Identify basic sight words
Read a book. Whenever you see a sight word, yell it or whisper it softly.
Distinguish fact from fiction.
After reading a book, identify it as fiction (not true) or nonfiction (true) and explain why.
Writing:
Handle writing tools correctly (click here to view a correct pencil grip)
Model how to hold a pencil correctly and incorrectly. Model how to erase properly.
Write all letters of the alphabet, lower case, and upper case
Watch this video and trace the screen as the letters are being written.
Print all letters of the alphabet using lowercase and uppercase letters.
Write his/her own first and last name using the appropriate case (only the 1st letter should be capitalized)
In your best handwriting, write your first and last name three times. Circle the one that is the neatest.
Write familiar words
Make a list of at least ten sight words you recognize in a book, magazine, or newspaper.
Make a list of color words, number words, days of the week, and/or months of the year.
Produce illustrations on a named topic and add labels
Draw a picture of your room and add labels to each item, such as your bed, dresser, etc.
Draw a picture of yourself and add labels identifying your body parts and/or clothing.
Draw a picture of an animal and add labels identifying its body parts.
Know ending punctuation and what each mark represents (period, question mark, exclamation mark)
Read or listen to a book. Find an example of each type of ending punctuation mark in the book (period, question mark, exclamation mark). Name each mark and tell why the author used the mark.
Write simple sentences to convey a thought or idea
Make an ABC book of your own. Write one letter of the alphabet on each page. Add an illustration of something that begins with each letter and label it.
Make a 5-page book about your summer. Include an illustration and sentence on each page telling about something you’ve done this summer. Don’t forget to include a front cover and identify yourself as the author and illustrator.
