What instrument can I play?
Violin, Viola, Cello, String Bass
For 6th-8th grade- High Strings (Violin & Viola), Low Strings (Cello & Bass)
*Each student was placed in the class they registered for in the spring.*
How do I get my instrument?
There are several reputable music stores where you can get everything needed for your orchestra class. I highly recommend that a student rent or purchase instruments and materials from our rental night OR stop by Edmond Music at your convenience (3400 S. Broadway). Our rental night will take place on August 21st from 4:30-6:30 in the DC Intermediate Cafeteria. More information to come!
What if I found an instrument on Amazon?
Most instruments that can be found online from places such as Amazon, Temu, Sam’s, Sears, etc. are what I like to call a VSO….. a Violin Shaped Object. These instruments are not well made, cannot be tuned properly, likely have damaged and non-working parts, and can cause a great deal of frustration for your student. It is difficult to make a quality sound when trying to learn on a very poor quality “instrument”. Please do not waste your money on these.
Will I need an instrument on the first day of classes?
No. Because we are a brand new program, instruments will not be required in class until Friday, August 22nd.
Do I bring my instrument to school everyday?
YES! All violin & viola players will bring their instrument to school daily. All cello & bass players will use a school issued instrument while in class. (Every child needs their own instrument at home for practice.) All instruments go home at the end of each school day.
Is Orchestra a year long class?
YES! You will be in orchestra for the entire academic year. You will be amazed at the progress and fun we have in just one school year!
Should I take private lessons?
I strongly encourage you to add private lessons if at all possible. Private lessons can give a student more detailed instruction, challenge them in new ways, and move at an individualized pace. Because students are in large groups during the school day, having that individual instruction can be a game changer. CLICK HERE for a list of approved private lesson instructors.
What else do I need to know?
I can’t wait to meet each and every student! This is going to be an incredible year together. Each student will receive the official Orchestra Handbook on the first day of classes. Be on the lookout for this on paper or in the Canvas Classroom. Let’s get ready for a fantastic year of music making!
