Growing and Changing

It's that time!! Your child was given a yellow permission slip to participate in our human growth and development lesson at school. This permission slip can be found in your child's Thursday folder and also can be found attached to this email. Please read it carefully and return it to school with your child by Thursday, December 14th.

Here are the complete resources we will use to teach.  We do not deviate from the curriculum at all.  Any questions we cannot answer (being outside of the boundaries we have of our curriculum), we will refer the student to ask his/her parent at home.

Naughty or Nice?

Our sixth grade students are selling Naughty or Nice treats starting Monday morning in the main hallway! Treats are only $1 for 1 treat, or $5 for 6 - and we hope that every student, teacher and staff member at Heritage will participate! There will be a special prize for the class that receives the most "Nice Treats.” So remember, buy "Nice Treats" for your classmates and "Naughty Treats" for your friends in the other classes. We can't wait to raise more money for the Make A Wish Foundation - check your student’s Thursday Folder today or click here for a form!

Changes to EngageEd Parent Portal

Difficulty logging into the EngagEd parent portal?

Just a quick reminder that in October the district implemented a new layer of security which requires the use of the following extension after your username to log into the EngagEd parent portal : @p.dcsdk12.org

So for example, if your current username is joesmom, you will change this to: joesmom@p.dcsdk12.org

For more information, please review the email originally sent to families on October 6th at 3:15 pm.

Keep this in mind when Elementary Progress Reports are released to the EngagEd parent portal at the end of the semester!

WHat we are Learning

In our Wonders unit, we are discussing elements that make up a Folktale.  The students are using text evidence to determine the theme of each story.  Theme can be a hard concept to understand because it's rarely stated obviously.  We have also used what we've learned about find the theme of a story in our Harry Potter novel.  We discovered that longer novels can have multiple themes with one main theme throughout. The students are also enjoying listening to my read alouds of Grimm's Fairy Tales (the original versions)!

We have finished two Fall Narrative stories as of this week.  We were able to look back on our first story and critique what our strengths and weaknesses are.  Our focus is using dialogue appropriately, writing passage of time, and including all 5 elements of a story (characters, setting, problem, attempts to solve the problem, solution).  We are also exploring with how to build suspense through sensory writing into our stories.

We have begun our unit in dividing with decimals.  In this topic, students will use mental math and place value patterns to divide decimals, use reasoning and strategies to estimate quotients, use models to help find quotients, use a standard algorithm to solve for quotients, and be able to make sense of word problems by looking at relationships in the situation.

We are more than halfway through our unit on Watery Planet.  This week, we were able to make a model water cycle and actually make it rain in our classroom.  The students also learned about aquifers and groundwater and how they are a major source of our water supply.  Our end of unit test is scheduled for next Wednesday, December 6th with a in-class review the day before.
