Growing and Changing

It's that time!! Your child was given a yellow permission slip over a week ago to participate in our human growth and development lesson at school. This permission slip can be found attached below. Please read it carefully and return it to school with your child by Thursday, December 14th.  I will be sending home a reminder email to those students who have yet to turn a permission slip in next week.

Here are the complete resources we will use to teach.  We do not deviate from the curriculum at all.  Any questions we cannot answer (being outside of the boundaries we have of our curriculum), we will refer the student to ask his/her parent at home.

Naughty or Nice?

Our sixth grade students are selling Naughty or Nice treats starting Monday morning in the main hallway! Treats are only $1 for 1 treat, or $5 for 6 - and we hope that every student, teacher and staff member at Heritage will participate! There will be a special prize for the class that receives the most "Nice Treats.” So remember, buy "Nice Treats" for your classmates and "Naughty Treats" for your friends in the other classes. We can't wait to raise more money for the Make A Wish Foundation - check your student’s Thursday Folder today or click here for a form!

Changes to EngageEd Parent Portal

Difficulty logging into the EngagEd parent portal?

Just a quick reminder that in October the district implemented a new layer of security which requires the use of the following extension after your username to log into the EngagEd parent portal : @p.dcsdk12.org

So for example, if your current username is joesmom, you will change this to: joesmom@p.dcsdk12.org

For more information, please review the email originally sent to families on October 6th at 3:15 pm.

Keep this in mind when Elementary Progress Reports are released to the EngagEd parent portal at the end of the semester!

WHat we are Learning

We continued our study in folktales this week.  The students read two unfamiliar fairy tales (The 12 Brothers and The 6 Swans) and used a Double Bubble Thinking Map to compare and contrast the plot of each one.  They also dug deeply into each story to discover the theme based on the characters' point of view and lessons that he/she learned.

Our 5th graders are concluding the calendar year with one final narrative.  This time, they picked from a variety of  fun holiday prompts.  I am meeting one on one for writing conferences each day to discuss with each child his/her strengths and goals based on the last two narrative prompts that were written.  This way, I hope to encourage them to focus on just the things he/she needs to work on rather than being overwhelmed by a list of all the components that make up a good story.  We are also focusing on adding sensory detail to our stories and have had a lot of fun writing creative settings and embellishing our characters.

We concluded our unit in divided decimals by decimals.  This unit seems to have flown by, but will flow nicely into our next unit on fractions. The students have struggled a bit wrapping their brain around the "why" in dividing with decimals, so hopefully the fraction unit will help them see the concepts more clearly.

We concluded our unit on Watery Planet this week and have moved on to "Age of Exploration".  In this unit, we will be meeting European explorers, learning about the technology that went into exploring, which routes they took, how they interacted with the Native Americans, the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Columbian Exchange.  We will be participating in a lot of fun activities throughout this unit!
