Winter Party

A HUGE thank you to Amanda Bowen for coordinating our Winter Party this Thursday, December 21st!  You are invited to join us in the celebration! From what I hear, it is going to be full of surprises, so don't miss out!  Wear your BEST ugly holiday sweater or holiday gear to celebrate!

We are asking that each of the 5th graders bring in a brand new pair of fun socks to participate in a classroom gift exchange.  They need to be wrapped (for the surprise factor!) and do not need to be labeled with any name.  If you'd like to bring in your socks early, I can store them in the classroom until our party!  If you'd like to donate an extra pair for kids who forget, that would be great, too. Fun!

No School Friday!

Just a reminder that Friday, December 22 is a Professional Development Day, so NO SCHOOL for the kiddos!

Naughty or Nice?

Our sixth grade students are selling Naughty or Nice treats starting Monday morning in the main hallway! Treats are only $1 for 1 treat, or $5 for 6 - and we hope that every student, teacher and staff member at Heritage will participate! There will be a special prize for the class that receives the most "Nice Treats.” So remember, buy "Nice Treats" for your classmates and "Naughty Treats" for your friends in the other classes. We can't wait to raise more money for the Make A Wish Foundation - check your student’s Thursday Folder today or click here for a form!

Report Cards are coming!

Elementary Progress Reports (or report cards) will be released on Saturday, December 23rd at 9:00 a.m.  You may view your child's EPR in the EngagEd parent portal.  Just a quick reminder that in October the district implemented a new layer of security which requires the use of the following extension after your username to log into the EngagEd parent portal : @p.dcsdk12.org

So for example, if your current username is joesmom, you will change this to: joesmom@p.dcsdk12.org

For more information, please review the email originally sent to families on October 6th at 3:15 pm.

WHat we are Learning

This week, we read our final folktale, Blancaflor.  This is a story from Spain that tells about Prince Alfonzo and his loyalty to keeping his promise after he is helped to find a cure for his father's illness.  The students read the story and spent time thinking about the themes in the story.  This next week leading into break, we will be doing a short poetry unit focusing on reading for meaning, style and sound,

Our 5th graders are concluding the calendar year with one final narrative.  This time, they picked from a variety of  fun holiday prompts.  I am meeting one on one for writing conferences each day to discuss with each child his/her strengths and goals based on the last two narrative prompts that were written.  This way, I hope to encourage them to focus on just the things he/she needs to work on rather than being overwhelmed by a list of all the components that make up a good story.  We are also focusing on adding sensory detail to our stories and have had a lot of fun writing creative settings and embellishing our characters.  Those writers who finish early will get to illustrate a scene from their narrative on Canva.

We have begun our work in fractions.  This week, the students have been adding and subtracting unlike denominators, which has been tricky to get the hang of.  There are so many steps to remember!  They are taking notes and learning how to find the least common denominator.

We have begun our study in the Age of Exploration.  In this unit, we will be meeting European explorers, learning about the technology that went into exploring, which routes they took, how they interacted with the Native Americans, the Atlantic Slave Trade and the Columbian Exchange.  We will be participating in a lot of fun activities throughout this unit!
