All About Me!

I live in Parker with my husband Brian, my two sons Davis and Blake, and our dog Maggie. I was born in Fort Worth, Texas and lived in other places such as Houston and a small town named Hobbs, New Mexico. Colorado has been my home since I was 12. I have 2 older brothers, one who lives in Vail, Colorado and the other who lives in California. After graduating from Heritage High School in Littleton, Colorado I went on to attend The University of Northern Colorado where I worked hard to become a teacher. I completed my student teaching right here in Highlands Ranch! Although I have taught at a few different schools, I have been a teacher in Douglas County my entire career. This community holds a special place in my heart. In my free time I like to exercise, do yoga, read, ski, be with friends and watch movies. I spend most of my time being a mom, attending my son’s soccer or lacrosse games, and being with my family. When we can, we like to go on vacations to the mountains or beach. I am lucky to still be doing what I love and what energizes me….teaching!

Philosophy

Maya Angelou said, “People will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” My passion as an educator is to make students feel valued, loved, respected, safe and empowered to achieve. As an educator it is my job to ensure that learning isn’t just for now, but for the future as well. Education looks very different than it did from past decades. Today’s learners are preparing for a future we don’t know much about. What I do know, however, is that they need something different. They don’t need more, they don’t need less, they sometimes just need something different. If we take the time to understand them as individuals with individual needs, perceptions, and ways of learning then we can be the difference and make a difference in each of their lives. This is not possible without the collaboration and partnership between the student, parents, and teacher. Today’s learners not only deserve the best instruction to learn “the basics,” they deserve the very best teaching and learning experiences that include higher order thinking opportunities, inquiry and in-depth study opportunities, flexible groupings by interest and learning strengths, and meaningful choices regarding content and process. They deserve opportunities to develop and practice 21st century skills such as creativity, problem solving, resiliency, and global awareness. As an educator I continue to reflect on my craft and practice to ensure that I am staying current with the learners I work with to meet their needs now and for the future. Students must feel competent, connected, supported, and engaged. It is my goal as an educator to facilitate this type of learning environment.
