Chromebook Refresh
If your Chromebook is exhibiting slow performance, sound issues, unresponsive keys, problems accessing certain websites, or displaying unusual behavior, there's a simple and quick fix that you and your student can do for most Chromebook issues.
Screen Rotated
Students may have accidentally touched the wrong set of keys on their keyboard and now the screen is upside down….Here’s how to fix it:
Hold Crtl, Shift, and Refresh.
This will turn the screen 90*, so if it is upside down you will have to do this twice to fix it.
Screen Zoom
Sometimes, your students may have accidentally changed the zoom on their Chromebook, which may cause certain web pages to break or become unreadable. Below are the shortcuts to fix the issue.
To make your screen bigger, decrease resolution: Press Ctrl + Shift and Plus.
To make your screen smaller, increase resolution: Press Ctrl + Shift and Minus.
To reset resolution (Standard): Press Ctrl + Shift + 0.
If the Clever tab was accidentally closed by the student and it wasn't bookmarked, and you don't want to go through the trouble of recalling the Clever URL, there's an easy solution. As long as the student is signed in to a Chromebook, they can simply click on the Home button to reopen the Clever tab.
Volume or Mic Issue
If a sound issue on a Chromebook persists despite trying a Chrome Refresh, there are three possible causes. The first is that the Control sliders are turned way down or set to the wrong option. The second possibility could be software, sometimes students may have clicked on a popup and be denied access (As they should do for most popups). The last possible reason would be a hardware issue, which would require the attention of your Site Tech
Volume
On the Chromebook, check to see if the volume slider is all the way down
Click on the Clock in the bottom right
Check the volume bar for muted or low-volume
If not fixed, Click on the arrow and check to see if the Chromebook still thinks Headphones are still plugged in, click Speaker (Internal), and test the volume.
Mic
If your student is unable to record their voice for a project or game check the mic volume.
Click on the Clock
Click the arrow next to the speaker volume slider
Under Microphone, is the Mic Muted or turned down all the way
If so turn the microphone volume to about half or two-thirds up
Website Audio Blocked - Mostly affects iReady
As previously mentioned, websites may request user permission to access their location, microphone, speakers, and other functionalities. Typically, students and teachers opt to click on "deny" as a precautionary measure when encountering pop-ups of unknown origin. Fortunately, Chrome provides a simple solution to check if a website is being blocked and can be easily resolved with just three clicks.
Example: On occasion, iReady may display a pop-up requesting permission to access the speakers, which students may have previously denied. As a result, when revisiting iReady, students may not have any sound available.
To remove a permission block from a website, refer to the following steps or GIF:
Go to the website that is experiencing issues.
Locate an icon with a red dot or x on the right-hand side of the URL bar.
Click on this icon and choose "Always Allow permission on _____.com".
Refresh the page/website, and it should resume normal operation.
Cast/Mirror Screen on Projector or TV
Teachers are able to use the same adapter they use for their Macbooks with these Chromebooks. Most of the time it’s just plugged and go, but some issues can arise.
The projector screen is different from the Chromebook Screen - Sometimes the Chromebooks will be in Dual Screen mode, which means you can move the mouse and tabs between both screens.
Change it to Mirroring - To easily switch between Dual to Mirror all you have to do is Hold ctrl and the 5th key over on the top row “Square with arrows in the corners.
*If the ports are broken on the chromebook, you wont be able to cast properly, so you might need to use impero to cast the device*
