What a gift it is to be able to speak more than one language! When enrolling your child in school for the first time, you will be asked if there is another language spoken in your home! If so, your child will go through a process that includes the WIDA Screener assessment, a home language survey, and teacher input. A letter will be sent home to the Parent or guardian explaining the scores and qualifications for services.
Language Proficiency (WIDA Screener): The WIDA Screener is a language proficiency test for students who have a second language spoken in the home. This test assesses the student's proficiency in English in various domains such as speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Home Language Survey: After the WIDA Screener, an interview with the parent or guardian is conducted. This survey asks about the languages spoken at home and the student's proficiency in English. If a language other than English is spoken at home or if the student's English proficiency is below a certain level, further assessment may be conducted.
Teacher Observations and Recommendations: Teachers may identify students who struggle with English language proficiency based on their observations in the classroom. They may notice difficulties in understanding instructions, participating in class discussions, or completing assignments. Teachers may then recommend further assessment for these students.
Once identified as a Multilingual Learner, students may receive additional support and services such as English Language instruction, sheltered instruction (where content is taught in a simplified manner with language support), or other interventions designed to help them develop proficiency in English. We utilize curriculum that features engaging instructional materials and an interactive learning environment.
Multilingual Plans
A Multilingual Plan (MLP) addresses students' unique needs, learning styles, and academic goals, serving as a roadmap for supporting English language learners in their journey to proficiency, academic success, and full participation in the school community.
ACCESS Testing-Administered in January each year
The ACCESS test, or ACCESS for ELLs (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners), is an assessment tool designed to measure the English language proficiency of students who are learning English as a second language. It is administered in January each year, to students identified as Multilingual Learners (MLLs). ACCESS Testing Information »
