Since May we have distributed 60 Intubation Boxes to 24 hospitals!! Our boxes are currently in 3 States and 1 US Army base in Germany
These boxes are designed with protecting medical personnel in mind. We were approached by Dr. David Avner, an emergency medicine physician from a local hospital in Denver, to see if we could use our ingenuity and resources to construct an intubation box to help protect healthcare workers from exposure to aersolized COVID-19 during intubations. We are a group of Technology and Engineering Teachers from the Denver Metro Area. We use CAD design technology in our classrooms to 3D print, Laser Engrave, and CNC with our students. Collectively we went through the design process with Dr. Avner to arrive at the Box that is being used in several Denver Area hospitals.
Initial designs ideas were from the intubation box that was inspired by Dr. Hsien Yung Lai in Taiwan. He designed the box for dealing with the challenge of safely intubating patients with COVID-19. He open-sourced the design for other doctors to use globally. Read more about the use of these boxes here. We also took inspiration from the COVID BOX website. We used some initial dimensions from both designs but then worked with feedback from Dr. David Avner and Dr. Dawn Kallio who also advised us to help get a box with the dimensions that worked best for them and their team of doctors.
