Policies & Procedures

Grading

In First grade we usually do not give number or percentage grades. Papers are marked with a sticker. Math tests will be scored with a percentage or fraction.

Most assignments are used as a tool to check ongoing progress as a concept is learned.

Daily Practice- Most of the work in first grade is considered practice. A happy face, star or sticker means your child understood most of the concept practiced. If your child does not understand an important concept, I will reteach the concept. The goal is for your child to understand each concept, so he/she can build new skills on a solid foundation.

At Pine Grove, we use Formative, Interim and Summative Assessments to assess students as they work to master Colorado State Standards for First Grade.

Principal's Exams

Principal's exams are given to help your child memorize and identify their basic addition and subtraction facts at a quick pace. Being able to do computation quickly will help your child excel in other areas in math.

Snacks

We will have snack time every day around 1pm. Please make sure to send in a healthy treat with your child. We have a student with nut allergies, so products with nuts of any kind are not allowed in our room. Your child should also have a water bottle that is easy open/close.

* Students may bring peanut products for lunch only.

Behavior Management

In our classroom we use Restorative Practices. We use these questions to examine their actions and restore their relationship.

1. What happened?

2. How is your friend feeling?

3. What can we do to make it better?

I ask these questions of both the offender and the student harmed.

Repeat behaviors will result in parents being contacted.

Newsletter Email

I will be sending out a periodic email to recap what was is happening in class and keep you posted on upcoming school news and business.

I have found that email is the most efficient way to communicate in a timely manner. I check my email at least twice a day. Although it may take me longer to return a call, that is a welcomed option if preferred.

Quick and informal hand written letters are not a problem at all either. Whatever works for you!

Birthdays

Birthdays are big events and classroom parties are welcomed. Students may celebrate by bringing in something small to share with classmates. If you choose to do this, below are some school wide guidelines.

  • Healthy treats or non-food celebrations are encouraged at PGE. If you would like to bring something sweet, please try and make it mini size. Suckers are not allowed.

  • There are 24 students in our class this year.

  • Remember to send in napkins if they might be needed.

  • Please try and contact me (email, call, write a note) to let me know when you would like to have the celebration. We have as many as 5 students with birthdays in the same month. I would like to try and help so everyone gets their deserved time.

Many parents ask if I can distribute invitations for home birthday parties. I am happy to let your child do this, if everyone is invited. It is terrible to feel left out. If you want to have a smaller party that is fine, but please don't bring those invitations to school.

I am not allowed to pass out a class list or contact information.

Please never hesitate to contact me for any reason, big or small. I am happy to help Pine Grove families in any way I can.:-)

I am excited for our year together!
