School hours are from 8:20-3:10. 1st graders enter and exits through the front doors.
Lunch every day is at 11:00. Students are welcome to bring a healthy afternoon snack to eat. Please also avoid sending treats with peanuts as we have several students with allergies. Hydration is very important! It is fine for your 1st grader to have a water bottle in class, especially during the late summer and fall months.
Birthday treats that are not food based such as pencils, trinkets, stickers, class book donations, etc are welcome.
Thursday Folders will be sent home Thursday. Be sure to empty the folder and send it back the next day with your child. Thursday Folders contain important information from the office, homework, and any completed classroom work.
The only homework required in 1st grade is reading for 20 minutes every night. This can consist of reading to your child, having your child read to you or a sibling, practicing sight words, etc.
I try to remain as positive as possible with behavior management.
*Sticker charts- Each student has a sticker chart. Students will be awarded stickers when they are doing the right thing at the right time. Students will receive a small incentive reward after 5 stickers.
*Chain link- If the whole class is making good choices during an assembly, specials, work time, hallway, etc, I add a chain to the link. THe chain starts at the ceiling and once the chain touches the floor, the whole class will get a reward voted on by the class
In the event students are unable to redirect their behavior in a positive way, they will be excused from activity to think about their choices. Once they have reflected on their behavior and ready to change, they will be able to rejoin the group. I will always check in with students to talk about what is going on and have them make a plan for how they can be more successful.
