Welcome to the 5/6 Discovery Classroom! The Discovery Program is a self-contained, center based, magnet program for highly gifted learners located regionally at three elementary school sites in Douglas County. The program is intended for those students who require intensity of instruction and acceleration beyond what can reasonably be expected from the regular school gifted programming.
Students may enjoy a snack in the classroom, but please make sure it is a healthy snack. Check out this article for some great snack ideas. Cupcakes, donuts, cookies, brownies, candy, etc. will not be permitted in the classroom during snack time. We do have students with food allergies. Please do not send in food containing pistachios and cashews.
1. Communicate with Kindness and Honesty
Be courteous and use kind words: Use polite language and thoughtful words in every interaction.
Be honest: Speak the truth with integrity so our community can rely on and trust each other.
Encourage others and lift each other up: Offer sincere praise, celebrate your classmates' wins, and boost someone's spirit when they're having a tough day.
2. Value Every Person and Perspective
Respect others: Treat everyone's personal space, belongings, opinions, and backgrounds with high regard.
Restrain from generalizing: Avoid broad assumptions or stereotypes about people; treat every classmate as an individual.
Be an active listener and participant: Focus fully on whoever is speaking, ask thoughtful questions, and actively share your own ideas.
Feel safe to advocate for self and others: Speak up politely when you need help, set healthy boundaries, and stand up for classmates who need support.
3. Grow and Persevere Together
Tackle challenges with a growth mindset: Embrace mistakes as steps toward learning, knowing that your intelligence and skills build over time with effort.
Persevere: Stay determined and keep trying, even when an assignment or topic feels tricky or frustrating at first.
Be helpful: Look for proactive ways to lend a hand—whether aiding a teammate with an assignment or keeping our space tidy.
Teamwork: Work collaboratively, share responsibilities, and recognize that we achieve far more together than on our own.
