Weekly Updates

I do weekly updates to keep you in the loop of what's going on in our classroom! I try to get them done by Sunday night, but if I'm traveling that weekend, they're sometimes delayed or skipped (sometimes something has to give!) Check back here frequently for lots of pictures & news!

5/22: End of year!

While this end of kindergarten was nothing that any of us ever imagined, I can't stress enough how much they've grown and changed since August... despite not being in the classroom for the last 9 weeks! I can't say thank you enough for continuing to support your child at home and being their other teacher!

I love them so incredibly much and I hope they always know that they have an invisible string to my heart!

Please celebrate them so big this weekend! Kindergarten is a big deal!

5/11-5/15 Remote Learning

We had our final week of our living things unit and the kids did so well researching the animal of their choice and creating an all about book! Most of you sent videos of the books to me, so most of the pictures for this update are the adventures of Flat Ms. Ham & Flat Jace! I'm loving the fun and creative things you've been doing and that Flat Ms. Ham's life is so much more interesting than real Ms. Ham's life right now! :)

Friday was our last community circle and interactive read aloud through Meets due to curbside drop-off and pick-up on Tuesday. We will have our virtual slumber party at 7:30 pm Monday night and I will read 2 books to them then! The whole family is welcome to join in PJs with stuffies and treats. I won't be recording this one, but did pre-record one of the books and it's already on youtube.

Friendly reminder: graduation caps and pictures are due by Tuesday morning so that I can create the collage and put it in the end of year slideshow!

End of year conferences are on Thursday from 8:30-3:00. Just a reminder that you're to call me during your allotted time! It's mainly a celebration of all your child has achieved this year and a couple things I'd like them to work on over summer!

I plan on doing one last weekly update next week with the link to the end of year slideshow and the graduation cap collage. I had a parent generously offer to host a Ham kid party over the summer, but we have to wait until we're allowed to gather in order to formally invite you! I'll save all my thoughts and feelings for next week's update. :)

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

Sneak Peak of the project! This one happened to tell me she was going to be doing remote learning from another state this coming week, so the project arrived a day early! The delivery person didn't want to crash your Mother's Days! :)

5/4-5/8: Remote Learning

We continued with our last teacher directed living things animal: owls! We used a lot of higher-order thinking during our read aloud of "Owl Moon" and this seems to be the favorite animal so far. Next week, the kids will pick their own animal to research on pebble go and make an "All About Book."

An optional, but fun project will be arriving to you on Monday if you'd like to participate! Thank you to Mrs. Robison for seeing it, creating it, and putting it all together!

In the envelope with the fun project that somehow arrived at your door, there is also an 8.5x8.5 piece of card stock and a sentence strip for your child's graduation cap. I am all for kid art and the kids owning things typically, but this is moreso a keepsake than an educational task, so I usually suggest that the kids assist where it is appropriate. On the cap, please have: your child's name, what they'd like to be when they grow up, and the year: 2020. If you google images, there are thousands of ideas and you can get very creative if you want or keep it very simple. That is also the background of the top banner on the website if you'd like examples.

Once the cap is created, measure your child's head with the sentence strip and staple it into a circle so that it fits. Then put the card stock face down and tape the sentence strip circle securely to it (the card stock should be at a diagonal/diamond/rhombus, rather than look like a square in orientation- it is in fact a square, but you know what I'm saying!) Please take your child's picture wearing the hat against a neutral wall (you know how I love brick walls! ha!) and send it to me. I will make a collage of all the kids once I have them all.

Lastly: A signup genius for end of year conferences is going out on Monday. MVE is planning on Thursday and Friday, but I was able to fit all of them on Thursday and will close on my condo on Friday (hopefully!). If Thursday won't work for you, please reach out and we will find a different day and time to work with your schedule! Thanks for understanding. :)

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

4/27-5/1 Remote Learning

I finally feel like we're all in the groove of this remote learning thing! I'm loving check ins and getting to listen to the kids read. They're growing so much at home, so even on those tough days, please know I am so impressed at how much they're achieving outside of the classroom!

This week's living things animal was the elephant! We dug deep into "A Sick Day for Amos McGee" after community circle & I was so impressed with the kids' conversations about comprehension skills.

We had some feedback that the math lessons were too hard to manage with multiple kids and with working from home so moving forward there will be two options:

1. A hands-on activity

OR

2. A worksheet.

I still recommend watching the video if you're opting for the worksheet route. Please do what makes sense for your family!

I just learned that Jan Richardson's "Next Step to Guided Reading" (the books we use for small group reading lessons) are available online & I'm working on getting that set up to share as another resource. I also think I'd like the kids to read those books during check ins. (Especially for our last one so I can pass along the most recent reading level to first grade teachers.)

Have a wonderful weekend in the sunshine!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

Remote Learning: 4/20-4/24

We continued along with living things this week focusing on coyotes! Our interactive read alouds were so productive and the kids are doing a great job staying engaged and participating. Please make sure you are watching the read aloud if your child isn't able to attend community circle on Tuesday-Friday. We move on to elephants next week with a great read aloud that won a Caldecott medal.

No major changes for next week other than math: we are out of iReady math lessons & Bridges Home Connections lessons, so math will have a bit more of the format we use for writing.

Please make sure you're attending your check ins each week!

With Tri-County moving to "safer at home," I'm looking at dates for our end of year celebration in hopes that we will be able to safely gather in June. Stay tuned!

Thanks again for all that you do! Please continue to send me pictures and videos of the kids. They make me very happy!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

Jackson's sister, Leah, made this mini documentary on him & I think it's so precious. I highly encourage you to take little video clips of this time at home & interview your child. You'll cherish them forever.

*I got permission to share this with you :)

Remote Learning 4/13-4/17

We started our living things unit that will last us until the last week of school! It is so much fun & it applies so many skills that the kids have acquired this year when they get to research and make a book about the animal they choose on the last week! We started with bears this week. I loved getting to see so many KWL charts (from the writing mini lesson) and writing journal entries from your PebbleGo research during our check ins!

The check ins were so successful this week & I loved getting that one-on-one time with your kiddo. I want to continue to leave it open for the kids to drive the conversation with work they're proud of, but I'd love if you could also have your kiddo have a book to read to me with any extra time. I was able to provide feedback and help with strategies for the kids who chose to read to me & it was so great for both of us. It's like personalized reading group. If you're looking for leveled readers, you can print the books from raz-kids (password in homework folder) OR reach out to me for suggestions!

If you didn't watch the read alouds on the read aloud calendar this week, I highly recommend it! I loved the book I read on Thursday about the true story of Winnie The Pooh. I also emailed out the interactive read aloud from Thursday called, "The Bear Report." I'm not posting it on here due to privacy restrictions!

Moving forward for next week, we're pretty much in the swing of things without many changes. You'll notice the read aloud calendar is blank, but it will populate as I add the recorded read alouds from community circle each day in case you aren't able to attend community circle. Also, the K team has created a fun & optional ABC countdown to the last day of school. It is underneath the specials calendar, but we're also putting each day on the remote learning calendar moving forward!

Due to our grade level and the time limits set by the district, we will continue to assign Monday’s subject areas like usual with the intent that they are to be done in the afternoon for no more than 3 hours. However, if your child works best in the morning and you would like your half day to be in the morning rather than the afternoon on Mondays, please do what works best for your family’s schedule. Just a reminder: there is no community circle, read aloud, or check-in on Mondays due to teachers being in meetings.

I appreciate all that you do! Give my kiddos extra big hugs for me please!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

Remote Learning: 4/6-4/10

I am so proud of you guys for working so hard! I love the pictures and videos you're sending! But the highlight of my whole month was definitely the birthday parade to celebrate Cole, Gavin, John, & Emme! It made me so happy to get to see your faces in real life even if I couldn't get tiny people hugs! Thank you for celebrating our kids SO big & so hard. I adore this class.

Wemberly Worried

A parent sent me some comprehension answers from the read aloud, Wemberly Worried. The kiddo said he wasn't worried for the first day of school because I gave him ready confetti...

Ready Confetti

I told the parent that it amazes me that it has that big of an impact on them & they remember it... so she sent me this in his scrapbook! Heart melting! My connections with my families are what are keeping me going during remote learning!

Fb Community Circle

I love how much you guys are posting in the facebook community circle! But more so, I love that you've made parent friends and are so supportive of each other. It reminds me that good is happening every day even if it doesn't feel like it!

Updates to remote learning for next week:

  • Specials is re-branding themselves as a "break" between classroom activities. They would still like the kids to do their lessons, but want parents to know that they're not too long or taxing... & interactive with the kids!
  • We are starting weekly check-ins! Here is the link to join the chat on that day/time you chose. To make it easy on everyone, it's the same link for Tuesdays/Wednesdays/Thursdays/Fridays and it's open from 9:30-10:30, so please be mindful to only get on at your date & time please! This is a time for your child to show what they've been working on, chat, and/or read to me!
  • We are adding a read aloud after community circle! It should still end by 9:30. If you can't attend, it will be recorded and posted after so that it's available to all when it works for you! Cross your fingers for books to arrive before Tuesday!
  • We are also recording mini-lessons on writing and posting them to the remote learning tab if you're interested! They are optional, but purposefully coordinated to go with the writing assignments for the week!

Have a wonderful Easter if you celebrate it & a wonderful weekend!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

Remote Learning 3/23-3/27:

Hi Families,

THANK YOU for all of the support you've given your child and me at home. I know this is hard for everyone involved and I truly appreciate everything that you're doing. I wanted to share pictures that were sent to me like a typical weekly update to keep some sense of normalcy and also share the survey results with you for transparency!

For next week's remote learning, the K team each recorded a read aloud and uploaded it to YouTube. Underneath the remote learning calendar, you will find the read aloud calendar. Each day there will be a linked video and 3 comprehension questions you can discuss with your child. Also, I saw that a couple of you have "subscribed" to my Youtube channel (what a world we live in these days; never thought those words would come out of my mouth!) and I will continue to add additional read alouds just for fun for families who want more! The specials calendar (2 page document) is underneath the read aloud calendar so there are 3 documents for you from now on!

I will be emailing individual families who said the amount of work was too much or not enough to make sure I'm meeting your child's needs, but the vast majority said it was just right and we were so glad to see that!

I posted this article about crisis schooling on my personal facebook & debated about whether or not to share it with my families, but I think it's so important to read. This is HARD for all of us; and because I love to keep it real... I cried a lot on Friday. I cried because it was supposed to be class picture day. I cried because the weather wasn't nice. I cried because one of our friends sent me an otter book (read aloud coming!) and it was the sweetest. I cried because I'm not used to feeling like I'm not pleasing parents. It was a lot. We are all going to have days like that during this time & I know you're doing the very best you can with your home situation... if that means all you do on a tough day is read & love your babies hard, that's perfect.

I miss them so much & I am so proud of them for working so hard!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

Although 1 more parent did ask for flexibility, I made the executive decision to assign daily since I assigned weekly last week. I already had this week's remote learning calendar done and it seemed the smartest since it was so close. We will re-evaluate after this week!

3/13: Wants vs. Needs

We started a new 3 week unit on wants, needs, and money. We started this week with a Laura Numeroff author study with all of her "If You Give A..." books! This was a great introduction to the differences between wants and needs. We have big plans for the weeks after spring break and we will have our own classroom economy where they will earn and spend money.

Our writing this week was responding to a text and writing whether or not we liked the book and WHY (using that big, fancy word because).

We've been talking a lot about reading strategies in groups & read alouds! We are professionals at Eagle Eye & Lips The Fish! We're working hard on Stretchy Snake, Chunky Monkey, & Flippy Dolphin. I don't really teach these in order, just when they present themselves. Feel free to print this and use as reading bookmark or visual cue when reading book bag books!

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonological Awareness: sound manipulation **this was the last week of PDL before we re-assess, please be working on the skills highlighted on your child's sheet! -Phonics: blends & CVCe words -Writing: Opinion writing responding to texts and explaining our thinking using because (Laura Numeroff author study) -Reading: Author's purpose! -Math: Weight using balance scales. Key vocaublary: heavier, lighter, equal, balance-STEAM: nature walk for animal prints!

Reminders/Updates:

-Our Journey book is completed & put together! We read it as a class & I'm trying to figure out how to upload it so that you all can read it and see the kids' hard work! Maybe I'll make a separate post just for that!-Spring Break starts Monday, March 16. Please refer to DCSD communications regarding COVID-19 precautions. -Our read-a-thon fundraiser was so fun! Thanks to all who donated! -Friday, March 27th: Graduation cap & gown pictures + Class Picture WILL BE RESCHEDULED! ! Class picture order forms went home in Thursday folders this week. They will send home the proofs of cap & gown pictures and you can select a package to order from there.
**Please be sure to check your email from DCSD & me as we navigate through this new experience together. I have included all information sent home in homework folders on the resources tab! (i-Ready at home information & passwords for educational websites. If you lost your child's razkids login sheet, please email me and I will help! Thanks!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

3/6: All. The. Things. (Dr. Seuss)

We had the best week celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday (March 2nd)! This week is always one of my favorites because we get to be silly, but the kids realize they can read "REAL" books! :) They're continuously choosing to go to library to read Dr. Seuss beginner books when finished with work early & it makes my teacher heart so happy.

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonological Awareness: sound manipulation -Phonics: blends & word families-Writing: Writing explanatory sentences to describe! (Who writing) + Opinion writing (Thing handprint writing) -Reading: Author's purpose! Dr. Seuss wrote beginner books for kids to learn to read, but some of his other books are for much more meaningful reasons (environmental awareness & political issues) - one of our kids made the connection that Sneetches is like Martin Luther King Jr. times because the plain-belly sneetches weren't allowed to roast frankfurters with the star-belly sneetches. (They all end up roasting them together at the end!!) -Math: Addition equations within 10 -STEAM: oobleck! Some of my texture kiddos had me cracking up at their faces and reactions!

Reminders/Updates:

-Suessival Carnival is tonight, March 6th from 5-7 PM. -Thank you for all the Dr. Seuss & Seussival donations! You are AMAZING! -Grandparents lunch is Wednesday, March 11 @ 10:45! -Spring Break starts Monday, March 16 - Friday, March 20th! -Our read-a-thon fundraiser flyer was sent home yesterday! Please log on & log your minutes to help our school! :) -Friday, March 27th: Graduation cap & gown pictures + Class Picture!
**If your kiddo is doing a spring sport, please reach out to me with a schedule so I can plan to attend one game/practice! My dance girlies... as soon as you have recital dates, please let me know! :)

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

2/28: President's Day

We had a belated week on President's Day because all of kindergarten just wasn't quite ready to be done with wordless picture books as we planned!

We're just about finished with writing "Journey"... we had quite a few kids out with a stomach bug on Thursday & Friday (sanitize everything!!) so I will upload our book once it's all finished and put together!

February was a long month with a lot of snow & indoor recess. We were beyond happy to be outside in the sunshine later in the week. Every time we went out, I would put my arms out like that and soak up the sun... it's become a trend! If you need us, we'll be outside photosynthesizing while we can. :)

Journey Writing

I am so proud of their creativity and writing! They ROCKED this.

Flossing

We had a dental visit for dental health month on Friday. The kids were teeth to floss!

Reading Rings

This was our last week to use our rings for pointing/swiping the words in reading group! We use something different each month :)

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonological Awareness: We started new PDL groups (notification went home with Friday's homework). Please see your child's updated skill sheet sent home in his/her homework folder and keep practicing until they're all the way through 5.11c please! -Phonics: word families, blends, & CVCe words (bossy e -> long vowels) -Writing: Writing the words for wordless picture books. -Reading: President's Day non-fiction texts -Math: 10 & some more (we worked with dimes & pennies, cubes, & other manipulatives for a lot of new hands-on work stations) -STEAM: animal habitats!

Volunteers: If you're able to help me with some crafty projects Mon-Wed this week (time flexible!), please reach out to me! :)
Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

2/21: Wordless Picture books

We continued working with our wordless picture books this week. The kids have gotten really good at spotting Caldecott Medal Winner books & I love that. Each kindergarten class chose a book to write the words for and our book is "Journey." It's a fantastic book about a girl who is bored because her family is too busy to play, so she goes to her room and finds a red crayon. She draws a door and escapes into an imaginary world where she goes to a castle. The whole book is in sepia tones except for the red things she draws. Then we see a purple bird that gets captured. The girl saves it and sets it free. The bird ends up saving her when she's in danger and she follows it back to a door in a palm tree. When they both go through the door, we meet the boy with a purple crayon who drew the bird. Then they both draw a wheel of a bicycle and ride off together. The kids each have a page or two to author and they're loving the responsibility!

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonological Awareness: 95% group! This was a re-assessment week & the kids all made growth and moved groups. Please see your child's updated skill sheet sent home in his/her homework folder and keep practicing until they're all the way through 5.11c please! -Phonics: "un" & "ut" word families-Writing: Writing the words for wordless picture books. -Reading: Matching the illustrations to the "text"-Math: 3-dimensional shapes & their attributes (sphere, cone, cylinder, cube) Here are 2 songs we loved this week: 3d shapes I Know & 3d shapes song for Kids-STEAM: animal habitats! We watched live cam's of a lot of animals all over the world... please supervise this link with your child. I am not responsible for any animal behavior on a live cam! :)

Reminders/Updates:

-Pajama day is 2/27 for spirit day! -Dr. Seuss Week is coming up: March 2-March 6 -Suessival Carnival is Friday, March 6th from 5-7 PM. -Please donate 2 liter bottles of soda (full bottles! Thank you! -I will send a signupgenius for Dr. Seuss Week with next week's update if you're willing and able to donate!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

We found this little one's cousin at our field trip (Northeast went too!) & he was in my class in 2016-17! It was so fun to see all those kiddos again!

2/13: So much love!

Get ready for picture overload from 100th day, field trip, Valentine's Day and our attempt at normal school week with snow days & delays! We are craving routine and structure and I'm hopeful that we'll have a normal week sometime soon! :)

We started our wordless picture book unit by reading the opposite... "The Book With No Pictures!" If you've never read this book, please do! The kids love it and laughed so hard. We then transitioned to wordless picture books with a bunch of Caldecott Medal winners. We will be the authors of the book, "Journey" and write the words we come up with to match the illustrations to the text!

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonological Awareness: Sound & syllable deletion and manipulation-Phonics: "ot" & "op" word families-Writing: Writing the words for wordless picture books. -Reading: Matching the illustrations to the "text"-Math: 3-dimensional shapes & their attributes (sphere, cone, cylinder, cube) -Stuffed Animal Sleepover: What did the stuffies get into?

Reminders/Updates:

-No school Monday 2/17: President's Day-Dr. Seuss Week is coming up: March 2-March 6 -Suessival Carnival is Friday, March 6th from 5-7 PM. I will be doing a "pop toss" and asking for donations of 2 liter soda bottles soon! -Pajama day is 2/27 for spirit day!
Thank you so very much to our room parents for planning and running our Valentine party on Thursday! It was so nice and calm; it was weird to have nothing to do!
I think I successfully texted or emailed the Love Is pictures to parents... if I missed you & you want your child's, please reach out.
Have a wonderful LONG weekend! With SO much love, Ms. Ham

I have done these Love Is boards for a few years now and Ms. F in 2nd grade asked to borrow the idea... I, of course, said sure but that Ham kids had already done it... I went back and found their Kindie picture and we put them side to side and it just makes my heart so happy! I love our school and I love getting to watch my kiddos grow up!

I wear glasses every single day to work, but wore contacts on Wednesday. This sweet little one discretely put her glasses in her cubby because she noticed I wasn't wearing mine. It was the highest compliment & a perfect reminder that little eyes are always watching.

2/7: Fractured Fairy tales: The 3 Little Pigs

We continued our fractured fairy tales unit with a book study on "The 3 Little Pigs." It was so hard for us to pick a favorite this week. We loved "The True Story" where the wolf explains how it was all a misunderstanding from baking his granny a birthday cake. We also loved "The 3 Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig!" where they build homes out of the strongest materials (concrete and padlocks, etc), yet the house of flowers is the one that saves the story! We loved "The Three Pigs" where the story gets all mixed up and the characters are outside of the pages of the book. And lastly, we loved "The 3 Little Tamales" where the wolf cries "Ay! Ay! Ayyyy!"

On Wednesday, we created engineering plans to build homes for the little pigs and wrote about them in our journals. On Thursday, we engineered and built the homes in real life and then took turns being the big bad wolf to try to huff and puff and blow the houses down. Most of our pigs survived & they LOVED this.

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonological Awareness: Sound & syllable deletion and manipulation-Phonics: We've started working on long vowels vs. short vowels with a this week! -Writing: Narrative writing & writing as an engineer. -Reading: Comparing & Contrasting the characters, setting, & events in The 3 Little Pigs versions-Math: Being able to talk about shapes by describing and comparing their ATTRIBUTES! (corners, sides, straight/curved, etc) -STEAM: animal homes on Mystery Science -Links: Fuel The Brain: Shippin' Shapes & Ten Frame Flash (or multiple ten frames if your child needs a challenge!)

Reminders/Updates:

-Monday is the 100th day of school! I cannot wait to see all my little old people! :) -Spring conferences are Monday & Wednesday nights. Please review the signup genius for your time slot. -Wednesday 2/5 is our field trip for our fairy tale unit to Ponderosa High School to see "Bedtime Stories." Please make sure your child has a sack lunch that day as we will be eating in the classroom due to missing our lunch time in the cafeteria! -I emailed the parent part of seesaw on Wednesday & you're able to see the activities your child completes during centers. You're even able to comment on them & we read the comments. It's so cute & the kids light up! -Valentine's Day Party is 2/13 @ 9:30. Please review the email from our wonderful room moms! -We had a challenging week with behaviors; please help by reviewing expectations with your child at home and celebrating the positives! -We are starting kindergarten PDL (personalized & differentiated learning) on Tuesday based on the PASI phonological awareness screener. You will receive more information to take home & practice at your child's conference!

Have a wonderful weekend! With SO much love, Ms. Ham

1/31: Fractured Fairytales: Goldilocks & THe 3 bears

We started a new literacy unit this week on fractured fairy tales & we are OBSESSED. It's a favorite unit of mine & the excitement is apparently contagious. We started off with the original, "Goldilocks & The Three Bears," and then read, "Goldilocks and Just the One Bear," (this was our favorite- a bear is lost in the city and goes into an apartment home and eats porridge, sits on things, and sleeps in beds... when the family comes home, the momma person thinks all these things are familiar & asks if he's Baby Bear! It was Goldilocks's home all grown up!), "Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs," and finally, "Goldirocks and the Three Bears." We were inspired to come up with our own versions of Goldilocks and the Three _____ during writing and the kids loved getting to be creative.

CVC words + Digraphs

We are "ROCKIN' IT" tapping out CVC words & cvc words with digraphs! We're still confusing /sh/, /ch/, and /th/ sometimes; please continue to practice at home!

question words!

We've been working on question words & the difference between a question and a statement.

Bananagrams for word families

We worked on "op" and "ot" word families this week! Sometimes we make houses (because families live in a home!) to build words in & sometimes we use bananagram tiles.

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: word families -Phonological Awareness: sound deletion (what's cat without the /c/ = at) & sound manipulation (change the /c/ in cat to /h/= hat)-Writing: Writing narrative stories after brainstorming characters, setting, and events! -Reading: comparing & contrasting the adventures and experiences of characters in familiar stories (Goldilocks versions!) -Math: shape review (2d & 3d shapes + how we DESCRIBE and COMPARE shapes!) -STEAM: Animal Habits on Mystery Science-SeeSaw: We have been doing pretty great at doing SeeSaw activities on the iPad during literacy centers. They have their own account & submit their work to me to be approved! I believe I can share a parent component so you can see what we're working on & it's on my list of things to do next week; stay tuned!

Reminders/FYI: -Conferences were moved to February this year: 2/3 & 2/5 evenings. The sign up genius was emailed out on Tuesday 1/21; please sign up if you haven't yet! -Our 100th day of school is Monday 2/3. We will be dressing up as 100 year olds! A note was sent home in Thursday folders this week & was also included in last week's weekly update email. -Valentine's Party is Thursday, 2/13 from 9:30-10:30 and families are welcome! -No School Friday 2/14!
**FIELD TRIP INFORMATION: We are taking a field trip to Ponderosa High School on Wednesday, 2/5, to see a play called "Bedtime Stories" where they get all mixed up... to go along with our fractured fairy tales unit the next 2 weeks! Everything is done online through MySchoolBucks. Please login to complete the payment and permission slip in order for your child to go. Because it is not an active field trip, we are not taking any parent chaperones for this field trip. Thank you for understanding! Please reach out to me if you have any issues with MySchoolBucks. Please complete this by Friday, 1/31!
Have a great weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

1/24: Martin Luther King, Jr.

We spent the entire week reading non-fiction texts about Martin Luther King Jr. and having very important conversations about why his dream was so powerful. We loved learning about his life and talking about how we don't pick friends based on how they LOOK, but rather how they treat us. I always start with talking about my teacher friends and how Ms. Slinkard has blond hair and I have brown hair. The kids really take off with this concept when we talk about the things that make us different and special (glasses, hair color, freckles, eye color, etc.) and how it's just crazy to not play with someone based on any of these things. We have always appreciated our different skin colors and use our "people colors" crayons and colored pencils during writing and drawing, so this was nothing new! :)

We had a community circle about our dreams and I love how it shows their personalities. I didn't give them any stipulations & I know our dreams to be mermaids or superheroes may not be super realistic or life-changing, but I love their innocence and it's the best reminder that they are still five and six years old. We have been doing AMAZING things lately (something magical happens in kindie in January!), but I always want to let them be little within reason too.

It took every bit of will power this week to stick to our routines & lesson plans because they are taking off reading and they are constantly coming up to read a book to me that they were able to read by themselves. If I could spend all day just reading one-on-one with them, it would be the best day ever. I am SO proud of them.

Morning Tubs

Believe it or not, kindergarten is bringing back some play-based learning. We are loving doing "morning tubs" after unpacking and getting to practice social-emotional skills!

Money March

One of our new math games is called, "Money March" and it's a great game using nickels and pennies. It teaches crucial number sense skills like counting 5 cents and then counting on from there. "5,6,7"

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: writing and reading CVC words, decoding with digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh) -Phonological Awareness: sound deletion (what's cat without the /c/ = at) & sound manipulation (change the /c/ in cat to /h/= hat)-Writing: Writing opinion sentences. -Reading: Main idea & KEY details about MLK Jr. -Math: money (nickels & pennies), counting on

Reminders/FYI: -No school Monday 1/20! -Please complete either the online or paper pre-registration form for the 2020-21 school year: it's so important for our staffing decisions! :) -Conferences were moved to February this year: 2/3 & 2/5 evenings. With SO much love, Ms. Ham

2020 + Jan Brett Author study

We were so happy to be back in room 17 on Tuesday! We loved sharing about our breaks during community circle. One of my absolute favorite activities we do in the new year is a More/Less writing activity. It's a great review of math and their answers are always precious.

We did an author study focusing on Jan Brett! We started with "The Mitten" and moved to "The Hat," "Gingerbread Friends," and ended with "The Wild Christmas Reindeer." The kids were so thrown off with the Gingerbread and said, "I thought we were done with gingerbread!" Always keepin' me in check.

We had a super fun week in math with non-standard measurement. We've been working on vocabulary words such as: shorter than, the same as, longer than.

Reading with whisper phones during reading groups! They love this.

Nonstandard measurement with strings.

Categorizing our string lengths by math vocabulary words.

We made party hats to go with our 2020 Less/More writing activity!

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: decoding with digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh) -Phonological Awareness: sound manipulation (change the /c/ in cat to /h/= hat)-Writing: Writing explanatory sentences. -Reading: How the illustrations match the text. Jan Brett's books give GREAT picture clues, and we focused a lot on predicting, analyzing, and higher level thinking! -Math: non-standard measurement

Reminders/FYI: -There was nothing for Thursday folders this week, so I didn't send them home! :) -Electronic Progress Reports were available on 12/21! Please see the email from MVE with directions on how to access them through the parent portal! -No school Monday 1/20! -Conferences were moved to February this year: 2/3 & 2/5 evenings. More info. to come! -We will have a field trip Wednesday 2/5. More info. to come! -Valentine's Party is Thursday, 2/13 from 9:30-10:30 and families are welcome! Our room moms are already planning & it should be just as great as Halloween- request off work now if you need! -No School Friday 2/14!
Congratulations to our kids honored on Friday for meeting their i-Ready growth goal(s) at mid-year! I was so sad I had to miss the assembly due to a meeting. I am SO proud of my kiddos. I can't wait to see all that they can accomplish by May!
Have a great weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

Gingerbread Activities (Click through!)

12/19: bye 2019!

We had a crazy last two weeks finishing up our gingerbread unit and doing lots of holiday read alouds and activities. We loved our STEAM time dissolving and disintegrating our gingerbread cookies. We also loved making our gingerbread ornaments with Mrs. Grotts and Dr. Taylor!

We went on a hunt through the school when a gingerbread man left clues in our classroom! We had gingerbread man cookies waiting at our desks when we returned from our hunt. We took our first bites and graphed where we bit!

We also made a HUGE graph of our favorite gingerbread version during community circle one day!

We celebrated our 300th paw card with an ice cream making party thanks to Ms. Heather's ice cream machine and the kids loved getting to help put everything in!

We had so much fun at our holiday party & the sing along on Thursday!

Holiday party pictures! (Click through)

Paw Party/Ice Cream Making pictures!

"Don't break the Ice! CVC words"

We learned a new game and we love it! You can pretty much turn any household game into a learning game & that's what we do in our room. Their reactions and excitement are so fun & they're decoding and blending so well.

Reading with finger Lights

We all were so happy to be back into reading groups after 2 weeks of iReady testing! It is most of our favorite parts of the day... since it's December, we used finger lights like Christmas lights to track & read!

We loved finding our elves

But we also loved focusing on being kind. We had the opportunity to elf another class and talk about what we could do to make them feel happy. We went on a secret mission through the halls to see which classes hadn't been elfed yet & then we voted on who to elf & how to do it! They loved this so much and I loved that they had so much fun bringing joy to another class.

my cute tree!

Thank you again! I have serious amounts of shopping to do & I am so grateful.

Gymnastics practice

Just a reminder that I LOVE going to your kiddos' things outside of school; please invite me & I will make it work!

& a cute kid quote

I don't mean to offend anyone by this at all! We have wonderful dads in our room & many stay-at-home dads, I just thought this was precious and innocent! :)

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: 100% letter ID & sounds, decoding with digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh) -Phonological Awareness: sound manipulation -Writing: Writing descriptive sentences -Reading: Comparing the adventures and experiences of characters in stories we know (gingerbread!)-Math: beat you to 20! -Social Studies: chronology -STEAM: gingerbread dissolving
Reminders/FYI: -i-Ready reports went home in Thursday folders! -Electronic Progress Reports were available on 12/21! Please see the email from MVE with directions on how to access them through the parent portal! I spent a lot of hours outside of school making my comments very specific to your child individually, so please make sure you read them. Part of your child's homework has to do with EPRs! :) -No school until 1/7 - enjoy your break!
*Thank you so very much for my class gift! It was equal parts practical & adorable and I am still obsessing over it! You are such a generous group of families and I am so lucky to have you. But more importantly, thank you to all of you who have frequently checked in with me this first half of the year and sent me little love notes or thank yous... those mean more to me than you could imagine! It's so easy to go above and beyond (or at least try to!) for this group of kiddos because of all of your love and support. THANK YOU!

Have a wonderful holiday season & please send me pictures! See you in 2020! :)
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

12/13: Catch us if you can!

We are so invested in our gingerbread unit! The kids beg to read "one more" version and love signing to me when things are the same or different as I'm reading... whether it's a character, the setting, or an event! But of course, it's the most fun to predict whether or not our gingerbread character will survive! We loved our gingerbread write the room, felt, & QR code centers. STEAM was also gingerbread themed: they had to create something to help their gingerbread get across the river. We've talked a lot about why cookies can't go in the river & they shocked me with huge vocabulary words like disintegrate & dissolve! :) We are having SO much fun.

Friday visitors!

We were over the moon excited about these guys showing up in our room Friday Morning! We read the letter during community circle and it asks us to give with a happy heart... being kind to others is a great place to start! We are very excited for our elves to see just how kind we can be in December!

Writing about our cookies!

They are doing such a great job stretching out words to hear sounds! We talked about "oo" and how it makes 2 different sounds. We can try it in a word & if it doesn't make sense, then we try the other one!

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Digraphs: "ch" + All letters & sounds! -Phonological Awareness: Middle sounds, tapping out CVC words and blending them (decoding)-Writing: Writing descriptive sentences -Reading: Comparing the adventures and experiences of characters in stories we know (gingerbread!)-Math: number lines, scrambled numbers-Social Studies: chronology -STEAM: gingerbread bridges
Reminders/FYI: -Mrs. Grotts asked us to add our morning recess BACK in, so we now have 3 recesses again! Our morning recess is from 10:15-10:30. I used to have to beg for my babies to get recess in Florida, so I just about cried happy tears when Mrs. Grotts asked us to do this because our kids need it! :) Have I mentioned I love working at a primary school?! Everything we do is through the lens of what's best for our littlest learners! <3 -If you have a child who will be in K next year or someone who does, please attend or invite them to attend our Kindie Info. Night on Dec. 9 from 5:30-6:30. -We took i-Ready reading mid-year diagnostic this week & I am SO impressed with their growth overall. A good chunk of them have already met their END of year goals at mid year. They really took their time & tried their hardest. -We take i-Ready math mid-year diagnostic next week. -i-Ready reports will go home in Thursday folders once both diagnostics are completed! -Our holiday party will be Thursday, Dec. 18 at the end of the day & it is kids only! I will be sending out a sign up genius in next week's update for some items to help us celebrate!
*Thank you to the families making gingerbread cookies for us this weekend! We have SO many fun things planned next week! Have I mentioned this is my favorite unit?! :)
Have a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

11/22: SO very much to be thankful for!

Hi families! I hope you've been enjoying your break from school & Thanksgiving holiday with your families and friends. I will try not to be TOO sentimental during this update, but we spent our week leading up to break reading all of my favorite Thanksgiving books and doing so many sweet activities.

We had a ton of fun and different writing and reading centers this week, mainly revolving around food and environmental print (things they read/write in daily life!)

Reading & Creating restaurant menus

Creating grocery lists

All of these things are easy to do at home! Have your child make the grocery list this weekend! Grab menus at local restaurants & make a play kitchen. They LOVE to take my order and serve me when we have indoor recess! All of these activities are phonics and writing activities without them realizing it.

Environmental print puzzles

Pattern Block Puzzles

Push Pin Pictures

I change these out to go with the season. I write sight words in the puzzle parts & they have to read and write them as they build the puzzle!

This one is the least literacy based, but builds those fine motor skills that are so important for handwriting! PLUS they are so focused and so quiet... if you want some peace over break, print a bunch of these and let them go to town! :) Everything we do has a purpose, I promise!

Missing a few, but almost all of my favorite turkeys!

Thanksgiving Feast pictures!

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Digraphs: "th" + All letters & sounds! -Phonological Awareness: Middle sounds, tapping out CVC words and blending them-Writing: Writing descriptive sentences -Reading: Retelling a story with the beginning, middle, & end. -Math: making 5, teen numbers -Social Studies: long ago vs. today- homes, clothes, food, etc.
Reminders/FYI: -Holiday shop is Monday & Tuesday when we return. -We will be needing gingerbread man cookies (2 class sets for different activities)- if you're willing to donate either or both, please email me! They can be store bought or homemade. -Addy's birthday invitations went home in homework folders on Friday! She was so kind to invite her old class & her new class! :) -We gave the kids a break on homework over Thanksgiving break; your log is for this upcoming week and due on Friday! -Your child's writing numbers to 20 assessment went home on Thursday! Please continue to practice if there's a note on there :) Remember reversals are normal and developmental, but switching the order of teen numbers needs to be corrected! -Apple Awards: If you would like to nominate teachers and/or classified staff for an apple award, here is the link! -If you have a child who will be in K next year or someone who does, please attend or invite them to attend our Kindie Info. Night on Dec. 9 from 5:30-6:30.

Each and every single one of your kiddos had a "Your teacher is thankful for you because..." note with a picture of us in his/her Thursday folder and it was the easiest thing ever for me to do! I hope it is so evident every time you see me with these little ones that I LOVE my job... but more importantly I love them! I am so incredibly thankful.
I had Ms. Heather take the picture below and she asked me why those 4 kids? One of the best thing about being a staple in kindergarten at MVE is that each year my crew of siblings grows. I'm up to 4 this year and each one is completely different than the older one. I may spend my days with kindies, but I am so thankful for my relationships with families too. Thank you for letting me be a part of your life, whether it's one year or multiple! It means so much!
Lastly, my social media accounts always suggest "mom" articles for me because I interact with teaching posts & kid posts. I really try not to offer parenting advice as I am not a parent & don't appreciate non-educators offering me teaching advice... but every once in a while I come across an article that I just so whole-heartedly agree with and this one below was great! It's written from the perspective of a teacher and I think she made some opinions of mine so eloquent! :) I want nothing more than to help your child succeed this year & set them up for success the rest of their lives... just ask them & they'll tell you, "we do hard things & it's okay if we mess up!"

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

11/15: LOng ago & Today week 2

We continued learning about boys and girls of long ago vs. boys and girls today. We specifically focused on the Pilgrims and their clothes, homes, and food.

We loved sharing our turkeys in disguise on Friday & writing about them. We also got ready for our Thanksgiving feast in STEAM by making Turkey hats.

We've continued writing groups & our days have really found a good rhythm! The kids loved our 2 new work station games this week: "grab bag more or less" and "bicycle race" (focuses on doubles).

I am feeling extra thankful for this sweet crew this year! I am so incredibly proud of how hard they work, but more importantly: how kind they are to one another. I had our room mom help with adding their fingerprints to my tree, so I had our friends who went to Ms. Mamay come back to add theirs too and watching them hug them and welcome them back was the best.

I hope to see many of you at our Thanksgiving Feast on Wednesday at 11:05!

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Digraphs: "sh" + All letters & sounds! -Phonological Awareness: Middle sounds, tapping out CVC words and blending them-Writing: Writing our opinion. -Reading: Asking and answering questions about unknown words! -Math: greater than/less than, doubles, making 10 -Social Studies: long ago vs. today- homes, clothes, food, etc.

Also, younger siblings can attend & I will absolutely be in baby snuggling heaven! :) *** PRE RSVP IS REQUIRED FOR ALL GUESTS ATTENDING THE FEAST. Please see the sign up sheet to pre-register for the event. Thank you!-Thanksgiving break is Monday, Nov. 25- Friday, Nov. 29-We will be starting a gingerbread unit when we return from Thanksgiving break & I will be asking for volunteers and donations! It is my absolute favorite unit of the year :) -Apple Awards: If you would like to .nominate teachers and/or classified staff for an apple award, here is the link! -If you have a child who will be in K next year or someone who does, please attend or invite them to attend our Kindie Info. Night on Dec. 9 from 5:30-6:30.
For Fun: -We reviewed our letters and sounds this week through the ASL alphabet song. Here is the link! :) Some of them have already memorized the whole thing & seeing a video of one of the boys doing it at home just about melted my heart!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

11/8: Long Ago & Today

With the beginning of November, we've started a social studies unit about long ago & today. We researched on PebbleGo and GetEpic about schools, homes, toys, and other parts of our lives to compare things that are different, as well as the same. The favorite so far has been toys! Shocking, I'm sure! We will continue reading and researching next week.

In November, we've been using eyeball rings to track & read.

We also switched reading groups this week! I've seen incredible progress & I moved all my groups up a level (or 2)!

We love writing cvc words & sight words in sand.

This is a great activity to do at home on a snowy weekend! I do not like messes, but they do a pretty good job keeping the sand in the tray!

They're starting to write sentences independently!

"I like my teacher because she is the best."

We loved celebrating veteran's Day on Friday!

Thank you to all of our families who have served or are currently serving!

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: All letters & sounds! Your child needs to know all 52 letters (capital & lowercase) & all 26 sounds with automaticity as soon as possible! -Phonological Awareness: Middle sounds, tapping out CVC words and blending them-Writing: We started writing groups this week so that I can give more individualized instruction. Some of our groups are working on planning (tree maps) and writing 2-3 sentences, while some of our groups are working on the components of 1 sentence! All are doing so well! -Reading: Asking and answering questions about unknown words! -Math: Adding 1 & subtracting 1, addition and subtraction stories -Social Studies: long ago vs. today- homes, schools, toys
Reminders/FYI: -TS Gold (Kindergarten Readiness) reports & goals went home in Thursday folders this week. -No School Monday (Professional Development Day)-I've updated the upcoming events part of the website for November & December! -Our Thanksgiving feast is Wednesday, November 20th at our lunch time (11:05-11:35)- we love getting to feast with our families, so please make sure you make work accommodations if needed! Also, younger siblings can attend & I will absolutely be in baby snuggling heaven! :)
Apple Awards: -MVE has included a link in the blasts for apple award nominations. I received the sweetest email this week about some of our support staff in our building and how wonderful our k-2 school is for our little guys. If you feel the same & would like to .nominate teachers and/or classified staff for an apple award, here is the link!
It takes 2 minutes & it means a lot!
To help you, I've included a list of our specials teachers: World Cultures- Mrs. Kate BuftonArt- Ms. Lindsey OttMusic- Ms. Kayla SmithPE- Mr. Dan McCarterLibrary- Mrs. Danielle ForrestSocial Skills- Ms. Bri Roth
Support Staff (that Ham kiddos interact with the most!): -Building Engineer/Lunch Duty: Mr. Dan Eichenberger -Front Office: Mrs. Becky Mamula, Mrs. Jamie Leichty-EA: Mrs. Heather Swisher
I believe you can also nominate our administration (Mrs. Millie Grotts & Dr. Jean Taylor.) I can't tell you how lucky we are at Mountain View! Not all schools do everything through the lens of what's best for kids. I am so inspired by our staff & culture. I hope you & your child feel the same. That being said, if you have any concerns or suggestions, please don't hesitate to reach out to me! My first goal is keeping your child safe, but my second goal is always that your child will be IN LOVE with kindergarten & school. :)
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

11/1 Halloween

We had a crazy week with delayed start on Monday, slow release Tuesday, a snow day Wednesday, Halloween Thursday, & a fire drill on Friday! This was truly a week where we just had to embrace the crazy, but we still got so much learning done and had a lot of fun!

We had 2 fun halloween poems this week.

We're really getting the hang of finding sight words.

We loved all of our halloween books & activities.

We graphed whether we like spiders or not.

We loved doing mystery science!

We learned about skulls and why we have them & different kind of spiders. They loved making jumping spiders.

We loved this interactive writing on November 1st.

I train them to say, "Maybe next time!" if they don't get picked for something...

At the end of this writing, B shouted, "maybe next year!" and I laughed so hard! It was so pure & so sweet. I am so lucky to spend my days with these guys.

40+ pictures of our Halloween party & other parts of our week! :)

Thank you so very much to our room moms for planning and running such a fun party! They also sent home pictures from the photo booth in your child's Thursday folder!

Have a great weekend!

With SO much love,

Ms. Ham

10/25 Retelling & Pumpkins

I hope you all had wonderful fall breaks! We loved getting to share during community circle. With the start of 2nd quarter, we're focusing a lot on learning goals. We've been talking about scales and the work we need to do in order to be at a "3" on the scale! We did this through read alouds on pumpkins this week. The kids are so into this & their favorite read aloud was Pumpkin Soup.

We also started our poetry journals with our first official poem: "Monster." We echo read the poem for fluency, find the sight words, and then add them to our journals. We did this with a color poem before fall break, but it was just an introduction.

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: All letters & sounds! I will be assessing this week, so please make sure you're practicing at home! -Phonological Awareness: Ending sounds, tapping out CVC words and blending them-Writing: Our writing is taking off. We are starting differentiated writing groups next week in addition to writer's workshop! -Reading: retelling the beginning, middle, & end! -Math: we took our number corner assessment & continued to solidify skills we've learned through work stations!
Reminders/FYI: ***OUR GOAL: all of our kiddos will know 100% letter ID & sounds by Halloween! -Book bags will go home on Monday! Our volunteer wasn't able to do it on Friday- thanks for your patience! :) -Library is Monday this week! Please make sure your child brings his/her book back. -Halloween Party: 10/31 from 9:30-10:30; families welcome! Please make sure you completed the RSVP/pre-registration if you're attending. -A stomach bug is making it's way around; I would take a can of lysol to all of your kiddo's things if I were you! We sanitized the tables extra on Friday & I am putting out all new writing utensils on Monday to try and minimize any germs!
Hope you're enjoying a cozy, snowy weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

10/11: Weather

For the past 2 weeks, we've switched gears to earth science: weather! We loved reading so many nonfiction books to learn about different types of weahter, but extreme weather like hurricanes and tornadoes were definitely our favorites. With it being October, we've also been doing a lot of "spooky" writing and reading with witch fingers during reading groups!

Reading with witch fingers!

They LOVE them! But don't buy one for home... hint hint! :)

Fall write the room.

Fall words are all around our classroom (pumpkin in this picture) & they love writing them. We will switch them with units & seasons!

Tiny Sight Words

One of our new centers uses magnifying glasses to find tiny sight words hidden in a picture.

"beat you to 10"

One of our new math work stations! They have so much fun playing these number sense games.

Grab Bag Doubles

This is our newest work station. They grab cubes out of a bag and place them "pair-wise" on the ten frame (so that they are vertical with partners) to see if it's a double or not, then write the equation on the T-chart.

Writer's workshop

We are taking off with writing sentences! The kids have been helping me write sight words in our sentence on the doc cam & they're all helping me stretch out sounds in words.

Click through for some fun pictures of the past 2 weeks!

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Xx, Yy, Kk, Zz (x, x-ray, /x/) (y, yo-yo, /y/) (k, kite, /k/) (z, zebra, /z/)-Phonological Awareness: Ending sounds, tapping out CVC words and blending them-Writing: writing sentences using "magic lines" - we count out how many words are in our sentence and draw that many lines with finger spaces in between. Then, we use our sight words and sounds to write the words on the lines. Our picture must match our lines. -Reading: asking and answering questions about unknown words-Science: weather! -Math: counting by 2s (using bike wheels), games: beat you to 10, grab bag doubles

Reminders/FYI: -Fall Break: Oct. 14-18 No School! -Homework was sent home Friday and isn't due until the Friday when we return. The log is for 2 weeks! ***OUR GOAL: all of our kiddos will know 100% letter ID & sounds by Halloween! -Library & Social Skills with Ms. Roth were added as our 5th special in our rotation, so we no longer have a "day" for library books to be due, it's every 5th day, but they can return them as soon as they're done with them! I will update the specials schedule on the website ASAP, but it's on MVE's.-I will be out of the country starting Sunday 10/13, and won't respond to emails until I return late Sunday 10/20! Thanks for understanding! I'll miss my kiddos a ton, but keep an eye out for the mail :) -Halloween Party: 10/31 from 9:30-10:30; families welcome! -SNOW gear: Your child must bring/wear SNOW boots when there is snow! They aren't allowed to play on the playground or in the field in tennis shoes if it's snowy because their shoes get soaked and their feet are freezing... then they want to take their shoes off and we can't do that due to safety (fire drills, evacuations, etc.). We go outside if it's above 20*, so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately. Also, if you love me... or like me... or even can find one positive attribute of me...PLEASE continue to practice putting on jackets, boots, gloves, hats, zipping, etc. ;) Bundled kiddos are my favorite, but independent bundled kiddos are even better! Thanks for your support!
Have a fantastic break! Send me pictures if you do something fun; I should have service! :)
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

9/27: Fiction Vs. Nonfiction week 2

This week we really focused on differences between fiction and nonfiction texts by continuing our theme of apples. We got to be so much more hands on this week with taste testing, graphing, making apple sauce, etc!

We focused on concepts of print for this unit: noticing whether the book had illustrations or pictures (sometimes illustrations can be confusing because not all nonfiction books use photographs!), glossaries, tables of contents, captions, close ups, and labels.

Fun Run pictures on the left (click through!)

&

Apple pictures on the right (click through!)

These sweet, empathetic kids could tell I was in the "blue zone" on Wednesday morning. They reminded me that we still owed Mr. Dan a paw card. We decided to make him a GIANT one to put on his office door & their excitement was contagious! I am so thankful to spend my days with them. We talked about how sometimes it helps us get back to the green zone if we do something kind for someone else! :)

"I like apple sauce."

"I like apple sauce."

"I like my marshmallows."

We got to make quite a few "Happy Phone Calls" this week! Lightbulbs are going off & I've noticed we are really starting to learn our sight words & letter sounds. This impacts our ability to read independently, but also means we're ready for writing sentences! We are all at different places for this (& that's PERFECTLY okay!): some of us are using resources to write sight words in the sentence & just get that first sound down on many words... some of us are writing sight words by memory & stretching words to get as many sounds as possible.

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Uu, Ss, Pp (what sound does each letter make? (u, umbrella, /u/) (s, snake, /s/) (p, pig, /p/) What's the motion? (umbrella, snake, paddle) -Phonological Awareness: Ending sounds!!! We are at different places with this- some of us still want to shout out the beginning sound. -Writing: handwriting: Gg, Jj, Uu, SsWriting sentences using "magic lines" - we count out how many words are in our sentence and draw that many lines with finger spaces in between. Then, we use our sight words and sounds to write the words on the lines. Our picture must match our lines. Please see examples and explanation above! -Reading: concepts of print for nonfiction books: table of contents, labels, captions, glossary, close up-Math: Tallies (this was VERY hard for us!!! please practice at home! I had to remediate & reteach this), Game: "Which Bug Will Win?"

Reminders/FYI: -Parent Teacher Conferences are Oct 1 & 3- please sign up if you haven't already! (see email) -I have a substitue Monday & Tuesday this week due to attending a mandatory training. Thanks for your patience! -BOTH TS Gold (Kindergarten Readiness) & iReady are having technical difficulties. It was my intent to send home both reports/data at conferences, but they will have to go home in Thursday folders at a later date***OUR GOAL: all of our kiddos working on the general education curriculum will know 100% letter ID & sounds by Halloween!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

9/19: Fiction vs. NonFiction

We started a new unit based on literacy standards that identify and compare the key components of fiction and nonfiction books! We're doing this through apples! We read fiction stories about apples this week & will move to nonfiction texts about apples next week and compare the two. Our favorite read aloud this week was definitely, "A Friend For Dragon!" The main character thinks his apple can talk to him because a snake plays a trick on him & the kids LOVED it.

We've been doing so many extra fun things for the FunRun: free choice time, pajama & stuffies day, extra recess, etc! The Boosterthon has character video clips that we watch each day and one of the days was about gratitude. I decided we needed to read one of my favorite books, "Penguin Problems" and we made a chart of what we are grateful for that day!

Our wonderful room moms helped us make the cutest fun run shirts on Tuesday! (THANK YOU!)

FUN RUN INFO: The fun run is Monday, 9/23 at 9:30. Families are welcome and encouraged to attend. Your child should come to school wearing sunscreen & athletic clothes/footwear! I kept their shirts and they will either put the shirt over the shirt they have on or change. Please make sure they have a water bottle! This weekend is the final push for pledges & usually Ham kids are in last, but we're in 2nd this year! They're awfully close to me having to buy pizza for a pizza party and if they get to $200 per lap, they get to pie me in the face! :)

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Jj, Gg, Qq (what sound does each letter make? (j, jump, /j/) (g, girl, /g/) (q, queen, /qu/) What's the motion? (jump, goggles, crown/queen) -Phonological Awareness: Clapping syllables (1 syllabic words are the trickiest for them!) -Writing: handwriting: Cc, Ee, Ff, review*We learned a new center called "Write the Room" where they have clipboards and go around the room to write words they can read (see picture)- this is why you're seeing lots of random pages with kids' names and colors on them coming home! :) -Reading: concepts of print for fiction books: covers, title page, author, illustrator, spine, etc. -Math: Number Racks! We've built number racks that they keep at school with pipe cleaners and beads. We are always looking to do things "more efficiently!" The kids use this vocabulary & completely get it. Strong number sense is built in kindie!
I showed them this game: Ten Frame Flash and told them that I would send it home for kiddos who have iPads/tablets. You can play it on the computer, but it requires a lot of mouse coordination! Choose the 5 frame or 10 frame option! **This works on a super key skill: subitizing (being able to look at an array or assortment of objects and know how many are there without needing to count them!)

Reminders/FYI: -The fun run is on Monday the 23rd at 9:30 and families are welcome to attend! -Parent Teacher Conferences are Oct 1 & 3- please sign up if you haven't already! (see email) -Book bags: your child may receive repeat books while they're still in the same level! We reread things all the time. However, if they're all repeats, reach out to me and I'll send some new ones home! I have volunteers do book bags because I don't have time in our school day, and I don't ask them to keep track of which books go home because it's already a BIG task for an entire class of kiddos! Thanks for understanding! :) -We took iReady math this week!
***I updated the resources and homework sections of the website to include social emotional visuals we're using from Ms. Roth (the counselor), links to songs we like for phonics and sight words, the alphabet chart we use in reading groups, and homework logs!
Have a wonderful weekend & I hope to see you on Monday morning!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

9/13: Push & Pull #2

We had so much fun putting our new knowledge on forces to work this week! We went more in depth with force, friction, gravity, & direction. By far, the favorite activity was bowling! We had 1 kiddo get a strike (such a strong force!) and 2 kiddos get spares. Their joy was contagious! I wish you could all feel the happiness in room 17 on a daily basis!

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Ee, Ff (what sound does each letter make? (e, egg, /e/) (f, fish, /f/) What's the motion? (elephant, flower blooming) -Phonological Awareness: Clapping syllables (1 syllabic words are the trickiest for them!) -Writing: handwriting: Ll, Ii, Tt, review-Reading: reading groups! What do good readers do first? (picture walk + talk) How do good readers point to the words? (one-to-one correspondence) + SIGHT words! We are getting to the point where many of them know almost all of their letters/sounds, so we are introducing sight words! -Physical Science: forces & motion- push & pull -Math: patterns, game: "Greater Than/Less Than" -ASL: we learned new signs for snack, water, & wait! :) The kids continue to add words we need to learn & they're still loving it!

Reminders/FYI: -The fun run is on Monday the 23rd at 9:30 and families are welcome to attend! -Parent Teacher Conference sign up will go out on Monday, September 16th at 4:00! If you need specific times, please check your email because it is first come, first serve! -Please make sure Thursday folders, homework folders, & book bags always come to school on Friday! -No school this Friday (9/20): professional development day! -A form from our room parents went home in Thursday folders this week, please contact me if you didn't receive it! -We took iReady reading this week & will take iReady math next week! The kids have done great & none of them got flagged for rushing! Testing at the beginning of kindie is a whole different animal, but I am so proud of them for trying hard!

We checked out library books this week!

We had our paw party for hitting 100!

We had lunch bunch in the classroom for a fun run prize!

Scroll through for some pictures of this week!

I got to surprise these two guys on Saturday at their soccer game! Just a reminder that I LOVE supporting your child outside of school- please invite me to things; I may come directly from the gym, but I do my very best to make it to at least one game or activity!

With SO much love, Ms. Ham

9/6: Forces- push & Pull

A short update for a short week! We've started a new unit on forces: pushes & pulls! We've been reading a lot of nonfiction books focusing on nonfiction features (captions, table of contents, glossary, etc.) and learning a lot about motion through exploration!
Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Dd, Cc (what sound does each letter make? (d, dinosaur, /d/) (c, cat, /c/) What's the motion? (dinosaur, cookie) -Phonological Awareness: Rhyming, Beginning sounds, Blending onset & rime (blend /r/ + /at/=rat) -Writing: handwriting- correct pencil grip, correct posture, horizontal & vertical lines, curved lines & circles-Reading: reading groups! What do good readers do first? (picture walk + talk) How do good readers point to the words? (one-to-one correspondence) -Physical Science: forces & motion- push & pull -Math: patterns, game: "Which Numeral Will Win?"
Reminders/FYI: -The pep rally for the Fun Run is tomorrow morning! You will be receiving fundraising info. soon! The fun run is on Monday the 23rd at 9:30 and families are welcome to attend! -Parent Teacher Conference sign up will go out on September 16th! -Thank you for your patience with lightning dismissal/homework/etc. with having a substitute on Friday!
I was the absolute worst at taking pictures this past week! Next week's update will be more fun :)
Hope you had a wonderful weekend!
With SO much love, Ms. Ham

8/31: Growth Mindset

We had another great week focused around critical literacy/growth mindset! Our read alouds were: "What Do You Do With A Problem?" "What Do You Do With A Chance?" "What Do You Do With An Idea?" and "Ish." They led to amazing conversations about how we do HARD things in kindergarten and there's a lot of things we can't do... YET!

We've been working hard to use our sounds and label our pictures in writing!

We had our first day of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) with Ms. Ott in the Learning Commons!

We started reading groups on Wednesday and EVERY child will receive small reading group instruction EVERY day for the rest of the year.

We ripped off that silly blue tape to our classroom because "we've got this!" :)

Mindfulness

We've been working hard on a mindfulness lesson each day for community circle this week!

Learning/Playing our new math game on the document camera! This is a new work place now!

Learning about our brains

The friend on the left is showing you the amygdala (thumb tucked into palm) because it's in the center of our brain! This is our "watchdog" and it's always looking out for danger. The friend on the right is showing you the PFC/prefrontal cortex (4 fingers wrapped over the amygdala/thumb). This is our "wise old owl" and it's what helps us make good choices. When we think we're in danger, the brain doesn't talk to the PFC and we make a decision to run/hide/fight... but sometimes what our brain thinks is danger isn't actually danger!

Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Aa, Oo (what sound does each letter make? What's the motion? (apple, octopus) -Phonological Awareness: Rhyming, Beginning sounds, Blending onset & rime (blend /r/ + /at/=rat) -Writing: labeling our pictures, how to draw a person -Reading: reading groups! What do good readers do first? (picture walk + talk) How do good readers point to the words? (one-to-one correspondence) -Social Studies: Civics (rules, voting, community) -Math: Ten frames, numbers 0-10, "Beat you to 5!" game
Reminders/FYI: -The pep rally for the Fun Run is coming up! You will be receiving a lot of information about this soon! The fun run is on Monday the 23rd at 9:30 and families are welcome to attend! -Picture retake day is THIS FRIDAY 9/6! Please email me if you are having your child retake his/her picture. The proofs went home in Thursday folders this week! -The kids will have a substitute this Friday 9/6 (Mr. Steve!) and I have no doubt that they will be wonderful for him, but we will be prepping for showing a substitute exactly how we do things in room 17! (This helps solidify our procedures anyway)-Our counselor is coming in for lessons twice a month about personal and social skills! I will update my resources page this week with some things from her as well as some things I've been meaning to add for our standard curriculum! -We are starting our first science unit on pushes & pulls this week! We get to do lots of hands-on learning!

Just For Fun:

I used to work at a Deaf & Hard of Hearing (DHH) school, so I've always used simple signs from ASL to accompany my words. The kids benefit from the visuals & it also gives us the ability to communicate when we must be silent (assemblies, in the halls, etc.)- this group of kids has a minor obsession with learning new signs, so we're making a list of words we use the most to learn next (line, pack up, snack, water). I am by no means fluent in ASL, but I think it can only help them, not hurt them! Maybe some of them will want to be interpreters when they grow up.

*Click through for the signs we know & use a lot!

Hope you had a wonderful long weekend! With SO much love, Ms. Ham

8/23/2019: Brown Bear!

We had such a fun week focused all around "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" Our main learning goals were identifying characters and retelling main events (sequencing!). Although almost all of them have read this book before, we loved the activities that we did to accompany the read aloud! We sequenced the characters in a pocket chart (at centers), sequenced on sentence strips and made hats, & made our first class book: "Kindergarten, Kindergarten, What Do You See?" where we practiced writing our names in our best kindie handwriting. They LOVE this and will read it in our library all year long.. plus it helps them learn each other's names!
We learned all about the Zones of Regulation this week during community circle! We talked about what puts us in each zone & also discussed that sometimes being frustrated or crying can be a couple of the zones- Ms. Ham can be in the red zone, yellow zone, OR blue zone when frustrated. I cry the most because I am frustrated, not because I am sad! But we also talked about how I cry when I'm happy too (happy tears!). They are doing SO well with this. Side note: I never use the word "bored" in kindergarten.. :)
We learned 3 letters this week: Ll, Ii, & Tt. The kids met "Echo" and "Baby Echo" and love getting to be the teacher for letter/keyword/sound! We're getting good at our motions that we do for our letter sounds too! Here is the song we use!
Ask Your Child About: -Phonics: Ll, Ii, Tt (what sound does each letter make? What's the motion? (licking a lollipop, inchworm, & turtle) -Phonological Awareness: Rhyming, Beginning sounds, Blending onset & rime (blend /r/ + /at/=rat) -Writing: 3 star coloring: 1. stay in the lines 2. make the white go away 3. use the right colors! -Reading: Literacy Centers, Sequencing, Identifying characters, & 3 ways to read a book (read the pictures, read the words, retell the story)-Social Studies: Civics (rules, voting, community) -Math: Writing numerals 1-5, Finger Patterns, Game: Spill 5 beans!
Reminders/FYI: -We earned our first paw party and named our cub Rosie! The kids voted to have a PAJAMA DAY on Monday! Please have your child wear his/her pj's to school! -White t-shirt (labeled with your child's name) is due Friday!-Homework went home Friday! It's due every Friday. -Please make sure your child is going to the bathroom before school! We have a lot needing to go first thing in the morning & we're trying to establish routines & procedures! -Tuesday is not a regular school day; please make sure your child is on time for his/her assessment day time slot!-Please check out clubs/after school programs your child may be interested in!
These two are sending you the best "weekend vibes..." Later Gator! Have a wonderful weekend! With SO much love, Ms. Ham
Hugs & bubbles in the hall! :)

8/16/2019: ROckin' in our school Shoes!

We had the BEST first full week & I just love this crew so much already! We're still taking it slow to build our classroom community, but we're very much into our routines now! We do community circles every day and have been playing games like "Just Like Me!" to find friends who have things in common with us, but also acknowledging our differences! Our main read aloud this week was: "Pete the Cat: Rockin' in My School Shoes!" and we had a very shoe-filled week in reading and math!

We added our coconuts to the bulletin board.

The kids came up with our classroom rules & signed them after learning about good choices & poor choices.

We read one of my favorite books: "Strictly No Elephants" & talked about what "All are welcome" looks like & sounds like!

This is one of my favorite things to do for community circles on Friday! Their answers are the best!

We had a big lesson on just right books

This friend tried to walk in "baby shoes..."

& this friend tried to walk in "Daddy shoes."

We talked about how it's so much easier to walk in OUR shoes because they fit! Books are the same way- some will be too easy for us & some will be too hard, but our feet grow- so we will get there! It doesn't matter what size feet our friends have & it doesn't matter what reading level our friends are at.

Click through for pictures from this week! I took a bunch! :)

Ask Your Child About:

-Phonological Awareness: Beginning sounds & identifying rhyme-Phonics: letters & sounds song (We have motions for each letter & sound - C, cookie, /c/) -Social Studies: Classroom community- what are our 3 big rules? Be safe, be responsible, be respectful. -Writing: Pencil grip, sticker names, straight & curvy lines -Reading: Just right books, reading the pictures, library procedures-Math: Sorting our shoes, counting (one-to-one correspondence), making human graphs to compare which number is GREATEST. -Paw Cards: We have earned 40 paw cards already! When we get to 50 we get to name our mountain lion cub & have our first paw party! :)

Reminders:

-Back to school night is Tuesday, August 20th from 5-6:30 (Parents only; no kids please!) -Thursday folders need to come back EMPTY on Friday morning please! -Tuesday, August 27th is not a regular school day- if you haven't signed up for an assessment day time slot, I will be emailing you next week!
*Thank you to all who donated extra snacks- we are good for a while! :) You're amazing!
Have a wonderful weekend! With SO much love, Ms. Ham

Weekly update 8/9/19:

The first two days of kindergarten have been so fun & I'm loving getting to know each of these little ones! We started Thursday with rotations around MVE to learn about expectations and what we do in each area of the school. It was a TON of information and they were great listeners! Because of that and pictures on Friday, we're just starting to learn our routines and procedures. We've made lots of time for play and brain breaks on GoNoodle because their brains are working SO hard to process all of this new information. Ask your child to show you how we kiss our brains when they've worked really hard. I promise you will be absolutely amazed at how much your child will learn this year, but we start the year off slow (building community/family, setting expectations, and praising everything!) so that we can go fast later.

Playground fun

Ask Your Child About:

Morning Procedures: Where does your water bottle go? Where do your snacks go? Where does your lunch box go?
Recess: What's your favorite thing to do at recess?
Community: What are some of your new friends' names? What do you like to play with them?
Number Corner: How many days have we been in school? How many links are on the chain? (2)
Lunch: What animal is on Ms. Ham's lunch baskets? (PIG)

Click for your child's picture! :)

Free Play

Reminders:

-Please make sure your child comes with a water bottle every single day! -Please make sure your child has a drink in his/her lunch box that is not that water bottle. Because we go straight to recess, our water bottles stay in the classroom so they don't get lost. If your child wants to buy a milk or water from the cafeteria, they may, but please make sure you go to MySchoolBucks (there's a convenient app) to put money on his/her account! -Our classroom often feels like we are in the Arctic! Please have your child bring a sweatshirt to keep in his/her cubby (labeled with his/her name) so that they're comfortable in our room. We can't learn if our basic needs aren't met because the brain focuses on that first. -Snack donation: If you're at costco or walmart this weekend and are willing & able to donate some extra snacks for us to keep in our classroom, we would be so grateful! Life happens & sometimes we don't always have our 2 snacks! -Be practicing those lunch numbers! 3 kiddos already know theirs. When they learn it, they get a free bowling pass from Mrs. Grotts! -Chicka Chicka Boom Boom coconut is due Monday! -Birthday book donation is due on Friday!-Monday morning drop off is NORMAL... I will not meet you on the playground. I'll be waiting in the classroom to say good morning to each of my kiddos! Ask your child what color tape they follow to get to our room. (BLUE) Have a wonderful weekend! With SO much love, Ms. Ham
