Why do we teach? The purpose of education is to build the foundations of learning into the young minds of the future. Our education system has been around for hundreds of years and is evolving every day, but are we reaching the full potential that students could be at? As a Kindergarten teacher, I want my students to love and enjoy school and want to learn. I feel like students learn best when they are comfortable around you as a teacher and know that you are there to help them. As a student, I have had teachers in the past who did not take the time to create a relationship and I struggled in that class because I felt like the teacher wasn't there to help me, so I didn't ask when I needed help. Creating a relationship with students promotes a good education.
My goals as a Kindergarten teacher are to create positive energy around education and for students to want to come to school every day. As a student, I loved school at a young age and was excited to learn every day. But, as I got older, I struggled to enjoy school because the pressure of success and not understanding became more prevalent in the classroom. Starting around 5th grade-middle school, our education wasn't about learning and understanding, but about test-taking and achieving excellence and nothing less. As a student, it was hard to enjoy a learning environment like this and school became a chore instead of an adventure. My goal as a teacher is to create a space where students want to learn and have opportunities to be excited and ask questions about things they want to learn.
The most effective method for teaching is that every student learns differently. Being able to understand this can help teachers create a space where students can thrive. Reaching every student and being there 100% for all of them is impossible and that is okay. Just being there for your students as much as you can and in whatever way they need is the most effective way to create lasting relationships with your students and help them grow and enjoy learning. Whether or not your students want to learn, show them how much fun school can be and how learning new things only makes the world seem bigger and better.
My technology skills are not very advanced. I can do basic things such as google drive and Powerpoint, but most of my technology skills are with social media. I love making collages, posts and creating flyers and designs to post on Instagram, Snapchat, Canva, and more. I have used Google Slides a lot in high school and college for projects and my club, Educators Rising NAU. I also use Google Docs, Drive, and Calendar to keep track of my assignments and important dates. To me, Technology Integration means involving technology in the classroom as much as possible, so students are able to practice using technology like they will out in the world. Whether by social media, email, website creation, or even a google search, we use technology every day and it is important for students to know the basics when it comes to the computer. I think technology should be integrated into all classrooms and used in all grades because it helps students be able to understand technology at a young age and be able to use technology on their own.
