As you probably know, the Board of Education passed Policy JICJA– Student Use of Communication Devices in School on April 21, 2026.
The policy prohibits use of communication devices (cell phones, smart watches, etc.) during the entire school day for elementary and middle school students. For high school students, communication devices cannot be used during class periods. The policy allows a few exceptions such as for instructional use and/or, for example, to satisfy a 504 Plan, among others. You can also find the Superintendent’s regulation here which provides more detail on school implementation.
What does this look like at Iron Horse?
Students will be required to keep their phones and smart watches in their backpacks from "bell to bell." Students will have access to their personal devices before and after school. Exceptions are made for students with health care plans/504 that indicate a medical need.
