While no formal homework is assigned, practicing sight words, math facts, and reading together for 20 minutes each night is a great way to support your child’s learning. I send home a monthly calendar with optional daily activities to guide practice at home.
Student progress is reported using Exceeds, Meets, Approaching, and Does Not Meet grade level expectations. It is common for students to start the year at the Approaching level as they learn new skills.
At Flagstone, we focus on Respectful, Open-minded, Citizens, Kind, and Safe behaviors. We call these ROCKS. Students can earn Mustangs as positive recognition when they show these traits.
This year, your child will focus on important skills in literacy, speaking and listening, writing, and math to build a strong foundation. Here are some highlights:
Literacy
Speaking and Listening: Sharing ideas, asking and answering questions, following directions, learning new words
Reading: Knowing letters and sounds, blending sounds to read simple words, reading sight words and CVC words, retelling stories, identifying characters and settings, comparing stories
Writing: Using drawings, labels, and words to share opinions, give information, and tell stories; using capital letters, punctuation, and phonetic spelling
Math
Counting and Numbers: Counting to 100 by ones and tens, writing numbers zero to twenty, comparing groups, understanding teen numbers as ten plus more
Addition and Subtraction: Solving problems with objects or drawings, breaking numbers into parts, making ten in different ways, adding and subtracting within five fluently
Please send a healthy snack that your child can open on their own. It is helpful if the snack is packed separately from lunch. Students should bring only water to drink during the day. Juice or Gatorade are best saved for lunchtime. Please send a water bottle with your child’s name on it. A straw top or easy open and close lid works best to avoid spills.
While we do not allow food for birthday celebrations, your child is welcome to bring a small goody bag with items like pencils, stickers, or temporary tattoos. We celebrate summer birthdays on their half birthday. We have 20 students in our class.
We use iPads during WIN time to support literacy and math skills. Students mainly use i-Ready, which matches our curriculum and provides lessons based on each student’s progress. Students are monitored by an adult when they are on screens.
Students may enter the building starting at 8:55 in the morning. If your child eats breakfast at school, they may arrive at 8:45. At dismissal, students are brought to the parking lot at 3:55. Car riders should stay in their cars while their car tag number is called over walkie talkies. Walkers should wait at the bike rack with their car tag number until the students arrive and sit on the sidewalk.
